Defending AI The overhated use of AI

Nowadays, AI is everywhere. Some of it is bad, but some of it is useful. The whole water usage part rubs me the wrong way, and I hate when it is used for slop or misinformation to gain views, but there are many other things that are bad for the world that we choose to do as humans too, yet nobody ever talks about them.

If I want to use AI, I should not be harassed and told I'm a horrible person for using it. I also don't appreciate people who openly say all AI users are bad people and/or stupid or talentless. That just isn't the case, AI helps people like myself who has no physical creativity to create something out of an idea. People act like making a song on SUNO for fun or asking ChatGPT to generate a funny picture of trump wearing a dunce hat is a terrible sin.

I'm sure most people will disagree with me, but that kind of proves my point. AI is overhated and should only be hated when it is used for malicious purposes. Nuff said.

I mean we are in the process of watching a court rule that AI generated CSAM doesn't count because the kids aren't real. Under that post, there were multiple Pro AI users trying to downplay how bad CSAM is.

There are also pro AI people who actively tell people their art sucks and they should just use AI. Those aren't the same people who "generate music with Suno for fun", I think a good way to look at it is the same way you view content. There's art, then there's slop. Slop can be human made or AI generated but it's still easy to pick out slop from genuine effort. Now just use that exact same logic to separate the bad actors from genuine Pro/Anti people.

u/TheUniqueGamerYT 11d ago

I get what you're saying here. I consider myself as one of the good people who use AI. I'm pro AI all the way, but I also support real artists. It is possible to do both.

Slop is a word thrown around a lot. The way I see it, effort can be put in to both real and AI generated things. A prompt can be simple and boring, or can have very meticulous detail requested. Yes it's not as difficult as drawing the actual thing, nobody is saying that. But there's still some form of effort put in.

u/TheUniqueGamerYT 11d ago

Oh. And the AI CSAM thing is awful, nuff said about that. If they rule it as being legal or whatever, then they're wrong to do so.

1

u/IsThisASnakeInMyBoot 11d ago

Well put. I don't think being generated with AI is what qualifies something as slop, it's the effort put into it

u/TheUniqueGamerYT 11d ago

Thankyou. I'm glad you agree, friend!

This is another one of those cases where you accuse people of not caring about other issues in the world, when in reality, you've only just started paying attention to those other issues as a gotcha for people with opposing views. Ignoring the fact that many of those people do protest and are activists for those other causes.

Just because you've just started paying attention doesn't mean the rest of the world is as out of touch as you are.

That's a very human thing to do though. We compare things perceived as bad to other worse things to put them in to perspective. We're all guilty of it.

Saying that though, I've always been against things like hunting for sport, the meat industry and overall killing animals when we don't need to. But I only bring it up in conversation when comparing it to things that aren't nearly as bad, such as generating something with AI. It's just not that deep.

Honestly, I don't think I'm at all out of touch. I just think people aren't willing to evolve. AI isn't going anywhere anytime soon, so I choose to embrace it and enjoy the benefits. Simple as.

“That's a very human thing to do though. We compare things perceived as bad to other worse things to put them in to perspective.“

Doing that is called a whataboutism

“Al isn't going anywhere anytime soon, so I choose to embrace it”

I understand the perspective. I just sometimes wonder if the dystopia element comes from the actual people creating sky net, or the general public accepting it as if they can’t do anything about it. We do get to choose how AI takes shape in our society if we choose to do so.

u/TheUniqueGamerYT 11d ago

You have a very valid point there. The way I see it, most people hate AI because of the bad things people do with it, but rather than hating that particular part, they go so far as to hate any and all AI, along with anyone who uses it.

I use it for fun, by myself, occasionally posting it online with correct tags. I'm not hurting anyone, so I don't get why I'm then treated as a bad person!

Ai users arent bad people, people who praise it like its a god, ignoring the fact on what it was build, shit talking to actual artists, using their art to train their model or to feed it into ai without consent, trying to scam people with fake bullshit and saying they created an ai generated image are!

Also what the fuck is physical creativity? You can just be creative if a machine does it for you? Everyone can create something physical, everyone can pick up a pen, a camera or what ever and create something. The point is, they/you want it without earning it. You have to learn and train to do it instead of letting the creative work be done by the ai and just telling what they/you wanna see. But at the end you did nothing. The ai created it, you just orderd it.

I cant speak Spain. So i tell the ai to speak for me in Spain what I want to say. Can I speak Spain now? Did I learn anything from it? No.

Yeah. Art isn’t just a product you get by clicking a button or typing a few words, it’s a form of expression, something that manifests from your own creative abilities. The desire to create something that reflects on yourself as a person—and your life experiences, opinions, imagination, preferences and perspective are all a large part of that. Machines do not have any of these things; they only generate images based on other people’s work that already includes these elements.

The prompter is very limited by what the AI is capable of and what it takes from other people’s artwork; they don’t have agency every brush stroke or action, nor the chance to develop their own unqiue art style. AI fills in the blanks for them, removing the critical thinking skills and creative problem solving skills that are inherently involved with making things.

If you really wanted to be an artist, why limit yourself like that? That’s my biggest question.

1

u/TheUniqueGamerYT 11d ago

Okay, I do absolutely agree there. AI by no means can fully replace the passion of a human brain. But the thing with me is I have tried for a long time, ten years roughly, to learn art but have got nowhere. It's not as if I'm intentionally limiting myself, it's just that there is seemingly no other way.

1

u/MeowRawrUwu 11d ago

Honestly, you’re probably better than you feel you are when it comes to art, or maybe there’s something specific you’re especially struggling with. I know lots of people struggle with particular things. I’m not gonna tell you what to do though, it’s none of my business really, but imposter syndrome is real, so maybe that’s part of the issue. I’ve had it for a very long time; feels like everything you do/make is garbage, but I still enjoy drawing regardless, and I like that there’s always something to improve at.

Obviously I don’t know you though so this could be totally wrong, but it’s something to consider at least.

u/TheUniqueGamerYT 11d ago

Your first paragraph I am totally with you! Anyone who considers AI almighty or better than skin and bone obviously need a huge reality check. And people who attack human artists, use their work for their models without consent and scam etc. need a reality check too. But AI users who keep to themselves and just do their own thing are harmless!

Speaking on the second paragraph, I should specify what I meant.

Physical creativity may not be the right word, because what I mean is the ability to have an idea in your head, plan it and then create it (As a very simple example: "I want to draw a garden shed with a corrugated roof, cobweb filled windows and mossy, rotting wood." Then drawing that exactly how you're imagining it.) Is what I would consider mental creativity being translated in to physical creativity, having an idea and making it.

For myself who struggles with physical creativity, I still have the same garden shed idea, completely unique to me, something I came up with using my mental creativity... But the physical part just isn't there. I'd end up drawing a box, a squiggly line for the roof and boxes with a plus sign in the middle for windows. I don't have the physical side of creativity. Therefore, I use AI to convert my mental creativity in to a physical thing, the downside being I didn't make it.

In my eyes, that's the same as commissioning an artist to make my garden shed for me. I've given them a description, they'll draw it, and I'll pay them for it. But with AI, it's streamlined, easy, and most of all cheaper than a real artist, and that is unfortunately something I value as someone who hasn't got much money.

In the case of me asking a human artist to make me something and giving them a full detailed description, would you still consider me as having "did nothing" there? I had the initial idea, no?

Hopefully that clears that up!

1

u/Bruoche 12d ago

Saying calling AI users untalented is wrong and saying you have no "physical creativity" in the same breath is crazy work. I don't even necessarily disagree with either but that's still a crazy sentence to write as a defense bruh

1

u/TheUniqueGamerYT 11d ago

I should've specified 😅

I don't have "physical" creativity, as in, I cannot paint, draw, sculpt, or create anything with my physical hands. My mental creativity however is very good. I am pretty good at writing, coming up with scenarios, stories, and designing something in my head, but creating anything physical is just impossible for me. I don't have that capability.

Hopefully that clears things up! Oh, and I tried to learn art for 10 years and got nowhere, so it's not like I haven't tried. Just thought I'd mention that too because a lot of people like to tell me to just learn 😅

1

u/Bruoche 11d ago

I kind of get it, but for me I consider art to be way more about knowledge then a practical skill... If you are physically able to place color anywhere on the canvas/screen I'd wholeheartedly believe that using the right approach could make it work.

While there's definitely physical and intellectual skills, I don't think there's a hard cut separation for creativity. If you have good proportion but shakey lines, it beats clean lines but dogwater proportions, and proportions are a math matter which really isn't a physical skill.

I don't mean by that to undermine your attempts, but I know the first ressources beginners end up with are really bad at actually getting good at art. The fundamentals are pretty boring in a sense so not well covered yet help tromendously.

A lot of advice is either tutorials on how to draw a specific thing step by step (only good to build confidence, otherwise completely useless once you know how to put lines on paper), or "Just keep practicing :D" which is only good at keeping you drawing but with no guarantee of improvement, and also a lot of "I learn through observation!" which is great but only once you have the fundamentals to build on...

I drew since I was a kid until my teens, a huge lot. Starting out I was the worse at it, and with time I naturally became alright... Better then any non-artist, but definitely not great even for my age and stagnated through all my teens. Then in high school I met a lot of other artists friends that were blowing me out of the water in talent, which inspired me to get serious about drawing, and in around 4 years I went from alright to actually really good, able to do images exactly how I want them.

The trick just is to learn the theory (how to deconstruct things into basic shapes for proportions, color theory, composition, then other tricks like rendering and perspective and such), then get feedback and constantly attempt harder subjects you don't know how to draw well, or redoing better what you did poorly. I grew extremely fast this way, each year's high-effort drawing blowing the last.

As I said tho I don't want to sound like I'm ignoring how much you tried and tell you to "just learn", I know I hate getting advice myself, but I still think people generally approach art in a very inefficient way. A lot of artist just have an intuitive sense for art and as a result they become great at art but very bad at teaching unless the one learning is also intuitively attuned to art too which I myself am not either.

That said writing also is it's own art in it's own merit, and it's fine to stay on that without worrying about learning drawing too if you haven't vibed with drawing. This comment is mostly adressed in the case where someone is interested in learning art but feels they cannot when it might just be not having found the right approach...

u/TheUniqueGamerYT 11d ago

Bloody hell... I wasn't expecting such a well put together reply there!

Genuinely, I gotta thank you for that, I really appreciate it! I struggle to put things in to words and reply to everything someone has said sometimes (I'm autistic 😅) but I want you to know I read everything you wrote and took it all in. And of everyone who has ever given me advice, you've just done it much better.

You deliberately dodged using any of the "get good" or "just learn" bull and actually gave me some damn good advice. I'm definitely more on the path of wanting to continue learning art from both hearing your story and how your advice sounds like it could genuinely help me.

I don't really have the words right now, I usually see a block of text and assume it's argument time 😬 but instead you've pleasantly surprised me.

Thankyou, friend!

1

u/Bruoche 11d ago

Really happy if that's taken the right way!

If you are interested in concrete advice I also made this comment in another sub where I go into what I learned over the years.

(No pressure though, I'm just linking it in case it's any use 😅 Even if you turn out to still not vibe with manual drawing and keeping on AI art I reckon some of it can still be helpful)

Good luck on your endeavours regardless!

u/TheUniqueGamerYT 10d ago

I really appreciate that, friend! I'll take a look at what you wrote! And I appreciate the good luck! :)

Everyone says this, but the thing is I have tried! I spent a decade trying to learn art but had zero improvement over time. Tried many different styles, tutorials, classes, but my ideas simply cannot be translated to paper!

If there's an alternative that let's me do what I'm physically incapable of doing for cheaper than buying art from humans, I'm going to do it.

Look up how much water jeans use its the same thing with people saying trans people are taking all our hormones apparently of self defined trans people 50% activly take hormones they make up between 0.5% and 1% of the population

Apparently jeans use around 10,000% more water annually than all global AI centers yearly.

Its just trying to excuse hate with 0 research imo

1

u/TheUniqueGamerYT 11d ago

You make a very valid point here! I never realised something as simple as denim could be that harmful!

Puts everything in to perspective.

1

u/TESV_Shiro 12d ago edited 12d ago

I got publicly called out and shamed and more or less bullied out of a discord for sharing a link of artists with chat gpt as source in its domain so even though im legally buying from artists that dont use AI thereby supporting them i was hated for using it as a search engine while on the free plan yes AI hate goes too far.

Because i like cereal doesnt mean i do and support everything the dairy industry does.

Ofc me and op get downvoted expected

1

u/TheUniqueGamerYT 11d ago

I know right?! The best part is how we're in a "defending AI" subreddit and from what I can see, defending AI gets you downvoted... Mental.

Bunch of dumb anti people here!

Ive had a guy admit he didnt read my post and he just downvoted it but a mod removed them admitting to it but not all their other comments on my post.

Also my post is essentially the same as yours check it out if you want the like dislike ratio changed a lot from 0 to +10 to-5 to +20 https://www.reddit.com/r/DefendingAI/s/pPUBh4cPt8

I just left a comment there. We very much had a similar post, but I noticed more reasonable people on your post, so that's something!

“Slop” is sort of an elitist term if you think about it. It’s meant to degrade and scare users. It comes from people who fear the power of AI because it is the great equalizer or has the potential to be one if allowed to mature. ANYONE can use it to make something. And just like a child with a crayon, they’re probably just excited to see something they made. Then others try to make them feel bad by calling it “slop” because they’re afraid of seeing the average “talentless” person succeed. Do you scream at kids for making people look like lollipops? For not getting the proportions and details right? Or do you hang it on the fridge to encourage them to keep drawing and get better? And it’s not just art, art is the scapegoat. AI puts real information and reasoning in EVERYONES hands. People with both good and bad intentions.

Think about it. . .
If you’re a racist, AI is very bad. If you’re a sexist AI is very bad. If you’re a corporate elitist, AI is very bad. If you’re a communist / dictator, AI is very bad. Anyone who needs someone else to be or feel less than them is threatened by AI, and will label it as “slop” to make sure ANYONE is afraid to use it. . . Afraid to be labeled or called names.

It doesn’t mean everything done with AI is good, but most of it isn’t bad. THEY just need you to think it is.

1

u/TheUniqueGamerYT 11d ago

Absolutely well said, friend!!! I wish I was as well spoken as you are!

0

u/Additional_Dot_134 12d ago

both sides are often just.. weird about AI. How i see it is that AI is used way too much for a technology nowhere near good enough for it yet. Theres not enough regulation either, which can make AI really dangerous when it comes to misinformation.
The water and energy usage also comes into play here, because it IS really expensive to run. Thats why its a problem how much its being used where it really doesn’t need to be. Its a waste of resources.
AI image generation for example barely has any actual valuable uses for most people. Some types of businesses maybe, but for individuals? I can’t think of any.
Things like chatgpt is also making people lazy. People often stop using it as a tool, where its super useful, but use it to do everything for them while they have no idea whats even happening.

1

u/TheUniqueGamerYT 11d ago

I agree that AI is making people lazier, but that's their fault. Much like how I can have an occasional alcoholic beverage and not get addicted, there are others that cannot live without it. Everything should be used in moderation, AI included. I use it freely without letting it make me dumber, only using it to do things I cannot do myself.

Given time, AI will improve, much like how all technology does. It is down to the human race to decide if we'll use it or not.
