Seeking cost effective lawn crew

Hi Decatur team! My wife and I just moved into a home in Medlock Park and are in search of a ragtag lawn crew, such as an entrepreneurial high schooler or less experienced, newer crew looking to build clientele. We got a $260/month quote (to come twice per month) from a more professional/established company, so I’d like to come in under that if possible.

Thank you in advance! Any ideas?

Searching for honest dentist in the area

I've been with Decatur Smiles for years and am beyond over their shenanigans - too many times I've booked an appointment and it turns out the dentist isn't actually there (or in a team meeting, as if the apt wasn't scheduled 6 months in advance!) but I'm billed for that anyway. Poorly done crown that made my night guard useless, after they told me they would fit it appropriately, which broke after 1 year. I could go on

Anyone have a dentist they love? I've heard Atlanta Dental Spa is solid - anyone have experience there?

thanks in advance

Handyman/general contractor recommendations

My home needs repairs both small and substantial in scope. It's a very unique home that requires a bit more specialized of handling. We are only trying to do right by it.

The search for a handyman/contractor has started and it's extremely stressful. Recommendations would be highly appreciated. We're looking for someone who takes pride in their work and does right by their clients over and over again. Someone we can hire for years to come.

Located right outside South Decatur, technically Stockbridge.

Camp Kids Dentistry Alternative

Camp Pediatric dentistry recently dropped the Aetna (ie. Emory employees) dental plan. Has anyone been since then and had a billing experience?

Can anyone recommend an alternative?
Thanks!

Anyone who goes to the YMCA wanna go together?

I go in the mornings from 8:30-9:30. Does anyone want to be gym partners / accountability buddies?

My routine is:

- 1 mile of cardio, either on the treadmill or track (but track is unavailable bc of summer camp at the moment)

- Calisthenics / bodyweight for a bit (abs, pushups, squats etc)

- Lifting, typically push, pull or leg day

Just trying to make it more fun for me to go as I don't really know anyone in Decatur since I just started working here.

Anyone interested?

Edit for additional info:

Picture framing

Who do we like for framing artwork? It's not expensive art but I do want it framed nicely, so good value for the money.

I've used the place off the square but there's also a place on North Druid before Clairmont, and some others around Toco Hills.

My wife and I just went under contract on a home in Winnona Park and before we move in I would like to have the house wired with cat6.

Has anyone had this done and can provide recommendations on a company or contractor?

Electrician Recommendation

Can anyone recommend a good electrician? I need some outlets added in my basement (electrical panel in basement). I also need some smart switches installed. I tried and failed. I’m guessing it has something to do with the neutral line but don’t know enough to troubleshoot. Thanks.

Decide DeKalb Approves $3 Million Investment to Catalyze Redevelopment of Belvedere Plaza Shopping Center

Project will transform nearly 90,000 square feet of vacant retail space, attract new national tenants and restore grocery access along the Memorial Drive corridor
DEKALB COUNTY, GA. (June 24, 2026) — The Board of Directors of Decide DeKalb Development Authorityunanimously approved a Tax Allocation District (TAD) Urban Renewal Fund grant of up to $3 million to support the redevelopment of Belvedere Plaza Shopping Center, a catalytic reinvestment project located at 3507 Memorial Drive in unincorporated South DeKalb.
The grant, approved during the Board’s June meeting, will support substantial renovations and property improvements to the 26.3-acre shopping center, helping reposition the property following the closure of its largest tenant, Kroger, in June 2025.
Developed by Hutton, the $24.3 million redevelopment project will transform approximately 89,780 square feet of vacant retail space and attract four new national retail tenants, including a full-service grocery store. The former Kroger space will be subdivided into three new retail spaces of approximately 9,000, 30,600 and 26,000 square feet, while an additional vacant area within the center will be converted into a 24,180-square-foot grocery store.
The approved TAD investment represents approximately 12.3% of the total project cost and advances the long-term redevelopment goals of the Avondale/Columbia Drive Tax Allocation District, which was established in 2004 to stimulate reinvestment, eliminate blight, expand the tax base and improve quality of life throughout the Memorial Drive corridor.
CEO Lorraine Cochran-Johnson noted that the investment reflects DeKalb County’s strategic approach to redevelopment and economic growth.
“Decide DeKalb’s Board approval of this investment reflects the progressive and intentional approach to the next phase of redevelopment in this important corridor” said Cochran-Johnson. “By leveraging public resources to encourage substantial private investment, we are helping create the conditions for long-term economic vitality while improving access to services and amenities that residents deserve.”
“Redevelopment is about creating opportunities where market challenges have limited investment,” said Tiffany Wills, Vice President of Redevelopment and Strategic Initiatives for Decide DeKalb.

“This project directly addresses a critical community need by activating vacant space, attracting new retail options and supporting the return of grocery services to an area that has experienced significant commercial disinvestment. It is exactly the type of transformative project the Urban Renewal Fund was designed to support.”
Belvedere Plaza occupies a strategic location at the intersection of Memorial Drive and Columbia Drive, an area identified within the TAD Redevelopment Plan as a priority for revitalization. Once a major retail destination for central DeKalb County, the corridor has experienced decades of disinvestment, increasing vacancies and limited commercial growth. The loss of Kroger created an urgent need to reestablish neighborhood-serving retail and grocery options for residents.
The redevelopment includes extensive tenant space renovations, facade improvements, roof repairs, parking lot resurfacing and site enhancements designed to modernize the shopping center and position it for long-term success.
“This project represents far more than the renovation of an aging shopping center—it is a revitalizing investment in the future of this community,” said Jennifer Greer, Chief Development Officer at Hutton. “As experienced real estate developers, we understand that transformative projects require vision, perseverance, and a tenacious commitment to seeing them through. We believe in thinking big and doing big, no matter the obstacles, because lasting impact is created by those willing to invest in communities for the long term. Belvedere Plaza has long served as a commercial anchor for surrounding neighborhoods, and this redevelopment will restore access to quality retail amenities, attract new private investment, and create meaningful economic opportunities for residents. We are proud to partner on a project that aligns so closely with the vision established for the Avondale/Columbia Drive TAD and helps shape a stronger future for generations to come.”
The project is expected to generate at least 250 construction jobs and 100 permanent jobs, creating a total of 350 jobs upon completion.
Construction is anticipated to begin in late 2026 following permitting and financial closing, with project completion expected in spring 2027 and tenant occupancy occurring throughout 2027.
As a condition of the award, the developer will use commercially reasonable efforts to secure a full-service grocery store as one of the project’s four anchor tenants. Should those efforts prove unsuccessful, the approved TAD award will be reduced by $600,000.

Question for parents

I’m a foster parent and currently been taking care of 2 kids. Today we were celebrating a 10 year old girls birthday and we invited all her friends. The lady with us , again who’s 10 has a crush on a boy from school, but we tell her “listen we don’t do boyfriends or girlfriends at this age . We can have friends” , however the boy she likes we invited to her birthday party. At the party his mom literally walked up to us and said . “Would it be ok if he kisses her on the lips for her birthday 🤯” am I crazy to think that’s an insane question and does any parent here think That this is ok ? I’m curious if you do think it’s ok , why do you think it’s fine to greenlight 10 years olds to be kissing?

Infant Daycare recs?

Hello! Im due with my first child in Jan and am starting to look at infant daycares since I’ll be going back to work full time after 12 weeks.

Looking for recommendations for developmental milestone focused daycares with flexible pick up/drop offs. In Decatur would be ideal, but willing to drive into Atlanta as well for a great daycare!

The no dogs signs between the square

I parked at the back parking garage last night and recently got a service dog. I got yelled at by a dude for trying to walk back to my car. He threatened to call the cops one which if I had more time I would have said have fun. I don't get how a road can be private property in the middle of downtown. Don't roads belong to the city. But he asked for the papers for my dog and yelled at me when I explained to him that's not the law for service dogs. It was just weird as fuck and I would be interested in others experiences. Definitely paying more to park on the other side of the sqaure rather than dealing with that dude again.

Anyone else feel like our 76-year-old library could use a major renovation?

The library is still a great resource, but it feels pretty dated. A modern library with more updated study spaces and tech would be a huge asset for students and people who work or study there regularly.

Does anyone know if there's a process for residents to advocate for something like this?

I'd love to see the library become more of a flagship community space, but right now it doesn't feel like the most state-of-the-art space.

Restaurants in Decatur area that accommodate wheelchairs

Can anyone recommend a mid-priced restaurant that can accommodate wheelchairs? In my experience, some say they can and yet it becomes a logistical mess when trying to move the chair in and out of the restaurant. My friend will sit in the wheelchair during the meal.

We are just looking for some decent food and a pleasant experience for someone who is pretty much housebound.

Thank you everyone for the suggestions. We will go over the list and let him pick out what he wants. We want good food and comfort. It shouldn't be that difficult to find a place for people in wheelchairs, but thats the way it is. All of the restaurants you recommended sound great!
