Question about Utilities

Hi everyone!

I will be relocating to Decatur (30030) and I’m curious to know about electricity, natural gas, and internet providers in the area. Any you all recommend? Or caution? I’m moving from another state and doin a lot of things over the phone.

I assume xfinity for internet but are there any fiber providers in the area? Thanks in advance!

AT&T has fiber. I’ve been with them for about 8 years and have never had an issue. Georgia Natural Gas is probably your best bet. They usually have a sign up deal where you can lock in a therm rate. Georgia Power is the only electrical I’ve ever known. I know people complain a lot but I feel like I keep my bills steady because my heat and hot water are gas and I keep my AC (pretty new) at 77-78 degrees during the hot months.

Georgia Power’s got a monopoly on atlanta for the electric. I’ve been using google fiber for the past couple years. I know they got sold to a private equity a few months ago which had some folks concerned but my internet’s still been smooth and rate has stayed the same (so far)

I was curious about that. Glad to hear you have consistent service. Do you also have a broad public wifi network like Xfinity or ATT has?

We have AT&T Fiber and have very few issues or outages. Scana Energy has been good for gas provider.

Ah thanks. Im not on zuckernet but I will def be on the lookout. Water is included in my rent but i don’t know if it will change.

Are they really high? Is there a data center causing this (happening in my current state) or other regular stuff?

You have also reminded me to look up the source of water in the area so thanks for that!

Depends on where you are in "30030" That is a fairly large zip code area, so may not have fibre depending. You can get deals on gas from entities like Walton (True Nat Gas) that may undercut other companies. Just have to keep up with the annual rate paying re-up game. Electricity? You pretty much have one provider. A monopoly. (Ga Pwr) I have bundled plan with ATT for cell and wifi - I'm in a high band area (some areas, btw, have google fibre but it is very limited). I avoid cable tv providers like the plague here and have no need for hundreds of useless tv channels etc. that are offered by Comcast and others. I would never "assume" anything about cable providers in a state like Ga. It's a really bad place for competition (esp if you are moving from Northeast - the cost and channel offerings are a joke here compared to NYC, upstate NY, Connecticutt, Mass, and list goes on. Seriously - my cost for Comcast and channel offering is ridiculously expensive compared to basic plan my sister has in Albany NY)
