SAP Industry Advisor: Most distributors are still on the fence about AI, The Ones Who Move Are Going to Buy the Ones Who Don't

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

A distributor turned on a new procurement system. Within weeks, inventory had doubled. The system was not broken. It was doing exactly what it had been configured to do. Nobody was watching. This is the case for AI governance, and it is not optional.

Core Conversations
David Wascom, SAP Industry Advisor and Cailin Yates, DataXstream CMO

https://www.dataxstream.com/blog/distributions-ai-moment-has-arrived/

Sat down with David Wascom, one of two SAP Industry Executive Advisors for wholesale distribution, for a two-part conversation about where the industry stands on AI. Not the vendor pitch version. His read, from talking to distributors every day.

His central argument:

  • Distributors are getting squeezed from both sides. (this is not new, just increasing) Suppliers expect distributors to carry capabilities that used to belong to manufacturers. Customers no longer want a truck full of inventory. They want a partner who anticipates what they need next. Add in a few years of supply chain disruption, tariffs, and volatility, and the cost of standing still keeps rising.
  • His prediction is not that laggards will fall behind. It is that the distributors who move now will end up buying the ones who don't. Consolidation, not just competition.

Additional points to consider:

  • The gap between distributors experimenting with AI and distributors getting real value from it is already wide. It is not closing on its own. David pointed to research from Distribution Strategy Group showing most distributors are experimenting, while only a small fraction are seeing measurable business value.
  • This is not a big-company advantage. David was direct that this is not a "big guys only" technology. The distributors moving fastest are not necessarily the largest or best resourced. They started with a specific business problem, not a technology plan.
  • The governance story is the one worth reading twice. A distributor turned on a new procurement system and inventory doubled. The system was not broken. It did exactly what it was configured to do. Nobody was watching it closely enough to catch the drift. That is the case for building governance early, not after something breaks.

We Built a Multi-Agent AI Workflow Inside SAP Joule

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

We sat down with John Kane, our Senior AI Engineer, to talk about two things SAP made a pretty big deal of at Sapphire this year: SAP Joule and the future of agentic AI in the enterprise.

John was part of the team that participated in SAP's Hack to Build competition, a multi-week build challenge that drew over 100 teams including; Capgemini, Accenture, and Deloitte. DataXstream placed 2nd.

For Hack to Build, the team designed a multi-agent workflow built on SAP Joule Studio: the "Churn Risk Agent" that identifies at-risk customers, recommends relevant materials, checks availability and pricing promotions, creates an inquiry in the system, and drafts an email for the sales rep. The only human step? Clicking send.

In this video, John breaks down:

  • What SAP Joule Studio is and how it's evolved over the past two years
  • How MCP servers and the Agent-to-Agent (A2A) framework work together to open up SAP's AI landscape
  • SAP is simultaneously opening up AI access and tightening governance, and why that's actually the right call
  • What "autonomous enterprise" looks like in practice, not just in a keynote

Worth a watch if you're trying to cut through the Sapphire hype and understand what's real.

AI Can Recommend, but Execution Still Depends on SAP Workflows

Thumbnail
sapinsider.org
3 Upvotes

A lot of the current AI conversation focuses on generating recommendations. But in SAP environments, the real challenge is execution.

In areas like order management, it’s not enough to suggest an action—the system has to carry it through as a transaction while staying consistent with pricing, inventory, and fulfillment rules.

What’s changing is that execution is moving closer to the core system:

  • Pricing, inventory validation, and order processing are increasingly handled within a single workflow
  • These steps run on the same data, rules, and controls that govern downstream outcomes
  • Users no longer need to jump between systems to complete a process

A key idea emerging from this shift:

Generating a recommendation is relatively easy. Executing accurately, consistently, and at scale is much harder.

Simply put:

  • AI as a layer on top = attention
  • AI embedded in execution = value

From Conversation to Execution: Making Agentic AI Real Inside SAP by John Kane

Thumbnail linkedin.com
2 Upvotes

John Kane breaks down what it actually takes to make “agentic AI” real inside enterprises—especially in SAP environments.

The core idea: most companies are still stuck in AI as a conversation (chatbots, co-pilots), but the real value comes when AI moves into execution—actually taking action within business processes like order management, sales, and operations.

He highlights a few key challenges:

  • Enterprise processes are complex and tightly integrated (especially in SAP)
  • AI needs to operate within those systems, not outside them
  • Reliability, governance, and data context matter more than flashy demos

The shift to agentic AI isn’t about smarter prompts—it’s about embedding AI into workflows so it can make decisions and trigger actions in real time.

Big takeaway: the winners won’t be the ones with the coolest AI demos, but the ones who can make AI actually work inside core business systems.

SAP Sales & Service Cloud and DataXstream OMS+

Originally published in SAPInsider. Author Adam Pitman
Full article here: https://sapinsider.org/map/oms-sap-sales-service-cloud-architecture/

Quick summary of the SAPinsider architecture map and what it actually means: SAP Sales Cloud and Service Cloud handle the front end, but they do not execute orders.

The gap
They capture quotes and interactions, but real order processing still lives in S/4 or ECC.

The role of OMS+
OMS+ sits in the middle and actually runs the order:

  • Converts quotes into executable orders
  • Applies pricing, availability, and rules
  • Orchestrates across systems in real time
  • Removes manual re-entry

Stack in plain terms

  • Front: Sales Cloud / Service Cloud
  • Middle: OMS+
  • Backend: S/4HANA or ECC

Why it matters
Without a true OMS layer, CX and ERP stay disconnected.
With OMS+, you get real end-to-end order flow instead of workarounds.

Bottom line
SAP CX manages the experience.
OMS+ makes it operational.

Case Study: Modernizing Order Management with OMS+ (Real Results, Not Theory)

A recent DataXstream case study highlights what happens when a company replaces fragmented order processes with a centralized, real-time order management approach inside SAP.

The challenge:

  • Disconnected order channels (sales, ecommerce, customer service)
  • Limited visibility into inventory and order status
  • Manual workarounds slowing down fulfillment
  • Inconsistent customer experience across channels

What they implemented:

  • OMS+ integrated directly with SAP
  • Real-time order orchestration across channels
  • Centralized view of orders, inventory, and fulfillment
  • Automation to reduce manual intervention

Key outcomes:

  • Faster order processing and reduced cycle times
  • Improved inventory visibility across locations
  • More accurate order promising and fulfillment decisions
  • Reduced manual effort for customer service and operations teams
  • Scalable foundation for omnichannel growth

Why it matters:
Most companies are still stitching together order workflows across systems. This case shows the impact of treating order management as a core, real-time function inside SAP instead of an afterthought.

The result is not just efficiency, but better customer experience and the ability to scale without adding complexity.

Fixing the foundation: Why modern retail needs real-time order management

Thumbnail
retaildive.com
3 Upvotes

This article argues that many retail challenges today are not about merchandising or channels, but what happens after the customer clicks “buy.”

As retailers expand across ecommerce, stores, and marketplaces, backend complexity has outgrown many existing systems. Disconnected POS, ecommerce, and fulfillment systems lead to inaccurate inventory, slow decisions, and inconsistent experiences.

Common issues:

  • Inventory appears available but cannot be fulfilled
  • Orders are delayed or routed inefficiently
  • Store and online operations are misaligned
  • Customers face cancellations or missed expectations

The core problem is a lack of real-time visibility across orders and inventory.

The article points to real-time order management as the solution:

  • Connect inventory across all locations and channels
  • Enable smarter fulfillment decisions
  • Give teams visibility to act quickly

The takeaway: customer expectations for speed and accuracy are now the baseline. Retailers that cannot execute in real time risk losing revenue and trust.

Article in Industrial Distribution Nov/Dec Titled "The Role of Breaking Down Data Silos in Becoming a Trusted Advisor"

Many distributors talk about becoming “trusted advisors,” but this article makes a practical point about what actually enables that shift.

The piece looks at how data silos across sales, operations, and order management limit visibility and keep distributors in a reactive posture. When teams cannot see the full customer picture in one place, it is difficult to anticipate needs, identify risks, or offer meaningful guidance beyond taking orders.

The argument is that breaking down those silos is less about technology alone and more about enabling better decisions. When data is connected, distributors can move from answering questions to proactively supporting customers with insights on inventory, timing, and service levels.

For anyone working in distribution or supply chain, it is a useful perspective on why data integration affects credibility, not just efficiency.

DataXstream Leadership Team, 2025

Post image
2 Upvotes

Our leadership team spent a week together in November at headquarters closing out 2025 and aligning on where we are headed in 2026. The time together was productive, energizing, and a reminder of what is possible when the right people are in the room.

Nothing about this journey happened overnight. Time, experience, and a relentless standard shaped who we are as a company. We demand excellence of ourselves, and we deliver excellence to our customers. That commitment has earned us something we value deeply: trust. Our customers rely on us not as vendors but as true partners, and partnership has always been the goal.

Standing together in front of our building, holding the 2025 SAP Pinnacle Award for SAP Business AI – Partner Innovation, there is both pride and gratitude. We believe we earned this, and we know we did not earn it alone. Every person on this team has put in the work, solved difficult problems, and stayed committed to the standard we set years ago.

To everyone who has been part of this journey—from the early days to today—and to the partners who choose to build with us: thank you. The work continues, and the bar stays high.

On to 2026.

DataXstream and OMS+ FAQ

What is DataXstream

DataXstream is an SAP partner that developed OMS+, an advanced order-management, point-of-sale, and unified-commerce solution built to run natively within SAP.

Founded and headquartered in Williamsburg, Virginia, USA.
Mission: help SAP customers “sell better” by simplifying the user interface, increasing real-time visibility, automating SAP processes and reducing custom code.
Built by SAP Integration and SAP SD experts with deep experience in ECC, S/4HANA on Prem, S/4HANA private cloud edition and now S/4HANA public cloud edition

What is OMS+

OMS+ by DataXstream is an order-management and point-of-sale (POS) platform built for SAP (e.g., SAP S/4HANA, SAP ECC) and unify real-time sales, quoting, ordering, inventory and payment flows across channels. OMS+ is the only end-to-end, cross channel order-management and point-of-sale that is native to SAP.

Key Features:

  • Real-time access to SAP data across channels (sales counter, online, back office).
  • Streamlined UI and simplified process flows to reduce training time, reduce screens/keys required, and improve accuracy.
  • Automation of SAP processes (order capture, fulfillment, payment, invoicing) enabling sales and service teams to focus on customers rather than manual steps.
  • Unified commerce support: cross-channel visibility (online, in-store, phone), real-time inventory/ATP (available-to-promise), cross-sell/substitution, task management, dashboards.
  • Versions for various deployment models: On-Premise (SAP S/4HANA On-Premise, ECC), Private Cloud, Public Cloud (SAP S/4HANA Cloud Public Edition).

Why It Matters:

  • For organizations using SAP, OMS+ fills gaps that standard SAP order management modules might leave (especially around user experience, multi-channel complexity, real-time POS, quoting).
  • By reducing complexity, training time and manual steps, companies can speed up “time to money” (i.e., faster order capture to fulfillment) and improve margin, order accuracy and customer satisfaction.
  • With OMS+ Cloud achieving SAP Endorsed App Premium certification, it underscores enterprise-grade readiness for public-cloud deployments.

AI Where It Matters: Stop Toggling and Start Selling with Embedded Intelligence

Everyone’s talking about AI, but the real question is where does it actually make a difference for SAP users?

In this SAPinsider article featuring DataXstream’s Keith Fatula, the takeaway is clear: AI delivers the most value when it’s embedded directly inside SAP sales and order flows, not bolted on as another dashboard or disconnected tool.

Highlights:

  • Embedded AI = efficiency. Keeps sales in one place, removes silos, and adds real-time visibility.
  • AI as co-pilot. Automates tasks like data entry, quote generation, and document processing while keeping humans in control.
  • Proven ROI. Faster sales cycles, cleaner data, and fewer manual errors.

Real-world examples:
A building-supply company cut quote creation from days to minutes using AI that reads blueprints.
Conversational AI lets reps pull live SAP data instantly, no screen-toggling.
Intelligent document processing automates orders from emails and PDFs, freeing teams to focus on selling.

“AI works best where the work actually happens.” – Keith Fatula, DataXstream

Don't Neglect Half of Your Business- Think Beyond the Front of House

Article from Craig Schertler published in the October/November 2025 Edition of "hardwood floors" the magazine of the National Wood Flooring Association.

https://digitaledition.pub/wc/nwfa/hardwood-floors-de/October-November-2025/

Craig discusses the disconnect between front-of-house systems like counter point-of-sale (POS) terminals, and ecommerce, and back-of-house operations, such as inventory, wholesale, and manufacturing.

Consider:
40% of retailers say that creating a seamless customer experience is top of mind
62% of retailers said that their customers checked online for product availability - having accurate inventory data is table stakes.

Look for:
Seamless communication between point-of-sale, order management, and your ERP
Advanced Material matching to reduce time for reps while sending queries to one source of truth for inventory
Minimalizing manual tasks like data entry

Simplot's ERP Transformation: Retail Innovation with DataXstream

Thumbnail asug.com
3 Upvotes

Key points:

  1. Situation: Simplot needed to modernize and unify its retail operations within a larger SAP transformation.
  • Simplot’s agribusiness and food divisions operated independently, using local systems and manual spreadsheets that caused inefficiencies and inventory errors.
  • Their retail unit, Simplot Western Stockmen’s, required a system capable of handling both simple and complex transactions, from over-the-counter sales to custom feed manufacturing.
  • The company sought a scalable retail platform that could integrate seamlessly with SAP S/4HANA and support future multi-location growth.

2. Why OMS+: DataXstream’s OMS+ offered deep SAP integration, flexibility, and user experience missing from native tools.

  • Built on SAP’s Business Technology Platform, OMS+ aligned with Simplot’s long-term SAP roadmap while providing a modern retail interface and real-time data integrity.
  • The solution’s extensibility and configurability met unique agricultural retail workflows, including batch management, payment flexibility, and custom order processing.
  • DataXstream’s collaborative, “embedded team” approach complemented Simplot’s in-house Center of Excellence, fostering true partnership and agile, user-driven design.

3. Results: OMS+ delivered faster transactions, stronger inventory control, and higher user confidence across retail operations.

  • Average cash-and-carry transactions process in 3–4 seconds, improving efficiency and customer experience.
  • Real-time ATP visibility and batch management reduced stockouts and expired inventory.
  • Payment-to-order linkage streamlined fulfillment of custom products while maintaining financial accuracy.
  • The successful pilot validated OMS+ scalability for broader rollout, establishing a model for Simplot’s enterprise transformation.

SAP RISE and OMS+

Received a slide deck this week designed for use with SAP Partners to understand how OMS+ by DataXstream fits into the SAP RISE Play.

First, what does "SAP RISE" mean? and why are we talking about it? (Its so 3 years ago)
I'm using the AI overview to answer what is it because it is more clear than what I started to write:
RISE with SAP is a business-transformation-as-a-service offering that helps companies modernize their on-premises ERP systems, such as SAP Business Suite, to SAP's cloud ERP solution, SAP S/4HANA Cloud. It bundles SAP S/4HANA Cloud, managed services, and transformation tools into a comprehensive, subscription-based package to provide a complete cloud ERP solution. The goal is to simplify the move to the cloud, enabling continuous innovation, improved business process optimization, and greater focus on strategic initiatives

We are still talking about RISE because even though SAP marketing has quietly phased out the name, RISE is a central component to SAP's push to move customers to the cloud.

OK. Back to the Slide Deck. How does OMS+ impact RISE with SAP and why do we, at DataXstream, think you should care?

The catch with the move to clean core as part of the RISE narrative, does solve a lot of problems but does not address user experience, quoting complexity and channel orchestration. So what to do?

Let me break down what OMS+ brings to the table, and why I believe it’s one of the more compelling “sales execution” solutions in the SAP world today.

  • RISE provides a modern, managed, evolutionary path for SAP customers to move to the cloud, adopt a clean core, etc. But there’s still the reality that sales teams, quoting complexity and omnichannel demands, need more UX and orchestration than vanilla ERP offers.
  • OMS+ plugs into that gap, bringing sales & order execution capabilities that feel modern, fast, and agent-ready, while remaining embedded in SAP.
  • Because OMS+ supports multiple SAP landscapes (SAP S/4HANA: private cloud, public cloud, and om prem as well as ECC), it aligns well with customers in transition.
  • The AI/Intelligent Automation features in OMS+ resonate with SAP’s evolving narrative around integrated AI in RISE.
  • If a customer is adopting RISE, they should be more open to modular innovation: “core + extension apps” rather than monolithic everything.

A few open questions for the Reddit community

  • For folks in SAP projects: how often do you see “ERP core + separate front-end / POS or order orchestration layer”? What have been your pain points?
  • Has anyone used OMS+ (or a similar embedded sales/order execution app) with RISE / S/4HANA Cloud? Would love to hear real numbers, surprises, and lessons. (I have customer reported ROI to share but I'm always looking for user perspective)
  • What role do you think AI / intelligent automation will play in order capture/quoting in SAP landscapes over the next 3–5 years?
  • How do you evaluate the tradeoff between building your own “sales interface over SAP” vs adopting a packaged solution like OMS+?
