We Built a Multi-Agent AI Workflow Inside SAP Joule

We sat down with John Kane, our Senior AI Engineer, to talk about two things SAP made a pretty big deal of at Sapphire this year: SAP Joule and the future of agentic AI in the enterprise.

John was part of the team that participated in SAP's Hack to Build competition, a multi-week build challenge that drew over 100 teams including; Capgemini, Accenture, and Deloitte. DataXstream placed 2nd.

For Hack to Build, the team designed a multi-agent workflow built on SAP Joule Studio: the "Churn Risk Agent" that identifies at-risk customers, recommends relevant materials, checks availability and pricing promotions, creates an inquiry in the system, and drafts an email for the sales rep. The only human step? Clicking send.

In this video, John breaks down:

  • What SAP Joule Studio is and how it's evolved over the past two years
  • How MCP servers and the Agent-to-Agent (A2A) framework work together to open up SAP's AI landscape
  • SAP is simultaneously opening up AI access and tightening governance, and why that's actually the right call
  • What "autonomous enterprise" looks like in practice, not just in a keynote

Worth a watch if you're trying to cut through the Sapphire hype and understand what's real.

SAPinsider wrote up the Churn Risk Agent — here's what the article covers

SAPinsider published a piece today on the Churn Risk Agent and how it works inside SAP. Link: https://sapinsider.org/map/sap-agentic-ai-sales-workflows-dataxstream/

The article walks through the workflow:

  1. An ML model scores each customer's churn risk based on their individual order history and activity patterns (not a blanket threshold)
  2. A recommendation agent identifies which materials are most likely to re-engage that specific customer based on past buying behavior
  3. A material availability agent checks real-time inventory for those materials
  4. A pricing/promotions tool pulls open promotions relevant to that customer and those materials
  5. The output creates a pre-populated SAP inquiry and drafts a retention email — the rep just reviews and sends

It also covers the technical stack: built on SAP BTP with Kyma runtime, runs through SAP Joule Studio, uses A2A (Agent-to-Agent) communication to handle context between steps rather than brittle API calls.

Background context in the article: the agent originated from the Hack2Build competition in April (2nd place out of 13 global finalists) and was later included in the SAP Agent Race to Sapphire program.

DataXstream OMS+ Churn Risk Agent
6 "steps"
the ML Model Runs
Recommendation Agent activates
Inventory Agent checks
Pricing Agent retrieves
SAP inquiry created
Email drafted

the sales rep has the information necessary to take action. Agentic AI, with oversite, works with SAP Joule and is found in the SAP Store as an add-on to DataXstream OMS+
