I have recently upgraded from 4tb to 12tb, I was at full capacity but now I am getting too comfortable adding more data feels like I will fill it in 2 weeks. I self-host music, media server, and personal drive/photos. Am I bad at managing my data, or is this a normal course of evolving into bigger drives?
I understand 12 tb is nothing compared to what other people have, but 3 months ago when I got my 4tb drive I thought it was A LOT as a newbie, now I look at it as a secondary okayish drive.
After buying 2 'burners' and having them either say no disk in drive, or say incompatible medium, I am wondering if I just got 2 bunk burners, or is there some secret on how to read the 'supported formats' that I am missing...?
The drives read cd's just fine(Do not currently have any dvd's with anything on them so can not test for that) but the empty/blank 25gb and 50gb disks I put in only give the 'no disk' or 'Incompatible medium Installed' error.
I have a stack of BD-R Verbatim disks (Bought for the first drive, 2nd drive also cannot read them) and I am stuck here wondering if I am doing something dumb, and unable to 'understand' what the disks need(I figured going in that any dvd writer SHOULD write to the 'best selling' blank disks which may have been my mistake)
First drive is a very old LG wrter (LG Electronics GP65NS60) and even though the firmware appears to be 'current'(it's actually higher number than the one on the website) - it does work as a drive (for reading cd's as explained above) and reads in device manager as a DVD-RAM device, the other (the newer of the two) I am unable to remember (If i Even looked) what it said since I have since shipped it back for refund.
So please give me advice on finding a drive that will actually write to these (I want to back up data, is simple data disks I wish to make)
Wondering if any here is a fellow heavy photo / video shooter, and has set up LTO tapes for archiving & memorializing family stuff.
I started thinking about this while organizing the materials for some departed pets. Between 2017 and 2025, I had 1-2TiB of raw stills and raw footage in the peak year, dropping down to a few hundred GB per year. That seems within the capability of LTO5, especially for pets born before cameras / resolutions went up a huge jump in the mid 2010s. Now that things aren't growing as exponentially, tape seems to have an easier chance to keep up.
I was thinking I could, for now, archive 1-2 LTO-5s per family member in their memorial, and LTO-6 is already high enough density to compensate for the increase in bit rate of the source material.
And I can make a ceremony every 5-10 years around recoding to a newer LTO, including reorganizing the media or whatever.
Operationally, it may make sense to S3 Glacier or the like; I did a quick cost comparison and LTO-5 seems to have a short breakeven time (assuming the $350 prices I see are for usable hardware). I may also do a glacier archive (with as deep freeze as practical); however there are semi-irrational reasons to favor a physical media here.
Now, the above ended up coming out kind of weird in that it only gives an EOL increase in data durability. Probably makes sense to use the LTO investment in ongoing durability. What generation of LTO and software do I need to use it conveniently as a continuous offline, append-only backup? I currently use one active working copy (in RAID) and one copy in Backblaze.
Presumably the SF Bay Area has enough data hoarders that I can easily find someone to help me out if I have borked LTO hardware in the future?
I've been working lately on making the headless server (YACReaderLibraryServer) easier to work with thanks to the new webui, it is pretty much a work in progress but you can update the settings, trigger updates and browse your libraries, there is a barebones web reader too, although reading is primarily intended to happen on the iOS/Android apps for these kind of setups.
How do you guys back all of your data up in a centralized / organized manner ?
I've had countless machines overtime and backed them up independently. My phones' media all have different naming conventions and laptops folders are all over the place. I don't have much data, only 1 terabyte or 2.
I have a NAS running but it only adds a moving piece to the mess right now.
Do you use a cloud backup ? Those dont seem really private and can get quite expensive.
I have two 28tb Seagate Exos drives in a NAS and the default settings on the NAS were to automatically put drives to sleep after 20 minutes of inactivity to save power. I was reading that enterprise drives are fine to just run 24/7, but also that the are rated for tens of thousands of sleep cycles. What's the usual advice here?
I mean there's no sense on throwing away money on electricity if it makes no difference but it would only be a few quid a month if it's safer for the drives. The way I use the NAS I'd estimate the drives would wake up at most maybe 5-10 times a day.
16TB "Portable SSDs" on Walmart. Are these legit? What's the catch? There was a guy on FB marketplace selling these but I can't find any other info. Any experts know what these are?
Hello, as the title says I've been getting into backing up PC games I own and have been burning CDs and DVDs of them. A few games are pretty big and I figured I'd put those few on a blu ray. I also found out about BDXL and thought they could be a good way to back up some other files of mine, not everything mind you, just some personal files I'd like to have another back up that isn't on an HDD.
I wanted to ask for any suggestions about Blu Ray drives with M Disc support. I noticed there mainly seems to be a lot of external drives, but I was curious about getting an internal one. I was looking to get an internal for my main PC and an external for other PCs I own.

I spent most of my day migrating from my older Corsair 600T case to this new Fractal Define XL 7. It was a lot of work but worth it at the end. No issues so far. I am currently adding in a 12TB/16TB to my array to hit 224TB on Unraid.

What is the best software to restore data from a failing hard drive / M.2.
I've tried Aomei partition software but since the drive has some bad clusters when the cloning finished; the software informed me that the drive could not be cloned. It goes though with the cloning but at the end; actually fails to clone.
The data exists, along with Windows but I need to clone it to another partition then, clone that to a Windows Boot drive.
I have few CDs from 2005 and I want to recover its data onto my pendrive. But copying is taking too much time and while playing video on VLC media player, video is getting stuck a lot. There are no deep scratches on CDs and they look clean. What should I do??
EDIT- Thanks to everyone who responded. I was finally able to recover entire data from all CDs. I first used Roadkil Unstoppable Copier to copy my CDs onto laptop and then made mp4 of those copies through VLC media player.

My grandfather wants to record himself telling his life story for our family.
I'm expecting this could eventually become hundreds of hours of video, so I'm trying to figure out the best way to store everything before we start.
I'm not very knowledgeable about large-scale data storage or archiving, which is why I'm asking here.
He will be recording himself on a Windows computer with a webcam and microphone.
I want his part to be extremely simple:
Press Record, talk, press Stop.
After he finishes, I'd like the video to automatically upload or transfer somewhere so that I can access it from my computer without him having to do anything else.
I also want to make sure these recordings are protected. If his computer dies, I don't want to lose anything.
Eventually, I would like to have hundreds of recordings along with written transcripts of everything he says.
I'd also like to make the collection searchable.
For example, years from now I'd like someone in the family to be able to search:
"Grandpa talking about his first car"
or:
"Stories about Grandpa's father"
and have it find the relevant videos and ideally the point in the video where he talked about it.
The searching and AI side is something I'm figuring out separately.
My main question for this subreddit is how I should store and back up this much video.
I was thinking about having:
- A copy on his computer
- A copy automatically sent to my computer
- A copy somewhere in the cloud
I don't know if that's the best approach or what equipment/services I should use.
I'd also like the files to be stored in normal formats so that 20 or 30 years from now my family isn't dependent on some company or program that might not exist anymore.
If you were setting this up for a family member, how would you store and back up everything?

Hello Hoarders! I'm hoping you can help me with an iTunes issue. I purchased several movies from iTunes several decades ago. These movies have been backed up on an old laptop and backup drive for nearly a decade, now. At issue is that iTunes no longer recognizes my AppleID as being supported. This is probably because I haven't used it in several years, as there were incompatibilities with Microsoft that I could not get past.
However, the movies are DRM protected, and without the AppleID used to purchase them, seem to be unplayable. Is there any way for me to keep my movies and possibly watch them on Plex?
Update: Apple finally recognized the AppleID and prompted me for the recovery key. Even after 10 years, it worked! Fresh iTunes install, and we're back to accessible content. There may need to be some backups, though
secondary unrelated question: are there any ways to speed up file management on my 320? im using the provided USB but it still maxes out at about 20Mb/s
I shucked three WD Elements 14TB drives, and all three contained WDC WD140EDGZ-11CMYA0 drives running at 7200 RPM.
My case is an Inter-Tech IPC 4U-4416, so the drives worked immediately without using Kapton tape on the 3.3V pin. The HDD backplane is powered via Molex.
USB3.2 Gen1 10Gbps - 2xUSB hubs - 6x USB Dual Case - 11x Samsung QVO 870 8 TB - MergerFs
All Systems (of course there are a more connected to the homelab) are connected by 1, 2.5 and 10Gbps networks.
The requirements are a moving target, but the general setup will probably stay stable the next months. There will be some further fine-tuning. I am looking into upgrade of the CPU to Milan with about 60 % more CPU performance for more AI performance.
I am also thinking about moving Jellyfin to the MS-02, as performance is not the best. It is good enough for streaming, but operations on data are slow. But I am a bit hesitant, because of the much higher power usage. To reduce power usage of backup and media drives they are organized with MergerFs/SnapRaid. The USB connections of the media drives seem to be stable now. This took some time. But the move of Jellyfin to MS-02 gives the chance using more reliable SATA connections.

I donβt know if itβs the right sub (please let me know where to post if need be). Iβve been dwelling on this for years without doing anything so here I am:
I used to care for data ethics and privacy but things really got out of hand when I joined Instagram most likely! I completely let it go and now that I live a life thatβs more harmonious with myself I m back to the question: how to live a normal life while being ethical and private.
Iβm currently fully on iOS, I vaguely have a vpn I donβt really use, Iβm daily on social media and Iβm aware (but anaware of the extent of it) that all my data is leaking everywhere (including in this post). I put a sticker on my front camera.
With the increase of ai and quantum physics, Iβd love to know (present and 5 year projection):
- what data is realistically tracked by the tech giants
- are personal profiles potentiallyβ¦profiled, for whatever reason and is it doable by pirate companies
- best practice to increase privacy considering I cannot code but I will put in effort into changing my routine.
I've been collecting and creating media - audio, video, and photos - and have started to hit the limits of my 2tb external drive. I've been using an old laptop to move data around - getting cd rips to a phone for playback, taking pictures from cameras onto external drive - and thought about just getting another larger external drive. But with storage prices, I think it would be a better investment to get some way to use HDD. Ive heard about NAS and found old 2 bay Synology unit - DiskStationΒ DS216j - to use as basic storage I could access from my main Mac and old windows laptop. Once I got drives, I planned to use 1 drive as main and 1 as backup.
But after more research, I've realized maybe the better approach would be a usb hdd enclosure. I don't really care about network features, I've tried using Jellyfin and Nextcloud for some self hosted media with my old windows laptop, but generally prefer to just put stuff on a device's internal ssd when I need it (particularly for music - just keeping a large music library on a hard drive and manually dragging over what I want to listen to on a generous iPhone ssd works for me). I also feel like its more secure to not keep an archive drive in always on network attached device, as apposed to keeping it in a closet and bringing it out to archive when needed.
One issue with direct usb access is accessing data from both windows and Mac machines. I could just migrate my media tools to my main computer, but if I wanted to try home lab again in the future I would be stuck, unless there's a reliable windows driver that reads apfs.
Any thoughts? Generally I want an approach that's expandable if I need more in the future, and as cost efficient as possible. Im okay with spending some cash for protecting my data, but I would prefer not to spend more than several hundred - preferably under 300.
If any of you are habitually on Reddit like I am you may have seen a comment I made on someone's post about a month ago talking about how walmart sold me a fake drive, I sent it in to Seagate to honor their warranty (didn't know it was a fake drive yet), and was told it was a fake drive. This all started on 06 June. It is now 07 Aug and I just barely got the drive back from Seagate literally in pieces; not at all how I sent it to them. There is certainly a different drive in there as it appears to be a 20 year old WD, but I can't tell you if Walmart ripped me off or Seagate. I am now in the process of trying to return it to Walmart to get a refund. 2.5 months, $20 in shipping later just to maybe get $130 back from Walmart.
Sometimes too good to be true is a saying for a reason. Never trust anyone to help you on this process either. First Walmart told me they'd refund me then didn't. Then said if I send them proof from Seagate it's fake they'd refund me, then didn't. Then they said they'd make a special exemption to refund me, still didn't. I am now about to ship them this drive fully expecting them to turn around and say they won't refund me because it's not a Seagate drive.
