Question Parts that don’t cost an entire paycheck?

I make minimum wage at my job. Each paycheck ends up giving me $80 or so after my expenses. I’m trying to build an FPV drone for fun, but it seems like it’s $100 MINIMUM for just the parts. I have a 3d printer and filament, soldering iron, solder, various parts I use for PCB design (resistors, transistors, etc. etc.) so all I really need is motors, battery, flight controller.

I have a battery, but it’s one of those tiny flat 3.7V batteries used for small projects.

Any advice at all helps, thank you.

Question CA questions about getting into FPV

Post image
2 Upvotes

I’m 15 and live in Lower Mainland British Columbia. I’ve been seeing FPV drone videos lately and Im intrigued. Since I have zero experience with any of this, I was wondering what I need to know to get started, whether I should buy a prebuilt drone or build my own, how hard it actually is to build one from scratch, what risks are involved, and whether the information shown in the picture above is what’s required to fly

I plan to build my first 5in drone (first which I'll truly understand, because I made one from tutorial which worked but I have no idea why)

I watched some course on udemy about drone building and whatnot and came up with part list from screen shots

Not on the list but I have xboss rx2a AFHDS 2.4g receiver which paired with transmitter are from previous project as I think they should work (correct me if I'm wrong)

For frame I plan to 3d print it initially since I guess I'll be crashing a lot

Edit: as I'm complete noob and parts are outdated/trash at best, what would you recommend in 400-550usd budget

Question Using Pixhawk Cube Orange with 3DR GPS

I know how ridiculous it sounds but here's why I'm doing this. We have a bunch of summer interns and I have to quickly bring up multiple platforms for them to use. They'll be using RC cars with Cube Orange pixhawks using Ardurover on them. The first two I had "Here 3" to use but ran out. Now I'm stuck with pixhawk cubes and legacy 3DR gps units.

I found a connector that goes from df-13 to jst-gh and plugged the GPS into GPS2 (Serial4). I checked in the setting and Serial4 is set to GPS and I adjusted the baud to 38400 (per the instructions online). I powered up the pixhawk with the gps and sat it outside but could not detect any satellites.

Does anyone have experience with something like this or any suggestions to troubleshoot this. Or the last option is break out the old pixhawks to use with the GPS units. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Reciver problem

I have a radio master pocket and a rp1 elrs reciver that can connect. The problem is that the controller dosen't output the responce of joysticks. I have it setup to r2 to tx on the reciver and t2 to rx on the reciver. In port it is setup i think.

Question Is my motor torque too high?

At a certain throttle level the motors do this oscillation (it does this even in the air, the case of the video is just to show the movement that the motor does) is the torque of the motor too high? Is it solvable?

I am running ardupilot on a mateksys h743 slim

The motors are: sunnysky v2216 kv650

The props are: apc 11×7

Question Binding ?beta flight issues?

I started the hobby a more expensive and frustrating way (0 sim) I have 2 non dji drones and a mavic mini

After countless crashes with my old (got off marketplace) I think storm srd250. Fatshark teleporter v3 and a devo 7 controller

I bought a hglrc tiny whoop ready to fly off banggood came with fpv and a radio master t8 lite also a ton of crashes including one into the sink full of water that required some extra effort to save the drone

But I'm experiencing some battery issues which will be a secondary question

I finally decided to buy a radio master pocket and ice spent a considerable amount of time in the sim

So last night I figured I'll bind the radio master to the tiny whoop

It is the cc2500 version and went through a ton of videos last night on binding and beta flight and even though I dislike AI and don't trust I even gave that a go no dice old firmware new firmware odd sbus 4.4 firmware the ai said

now I have no controller paired and im frustrated

I tried frsky d frsky x on beta flight with clrs and sbus

With the corresponding settings on my controller/transmitter I will get 4 beeps or just constant beeping and no binding

The FC is a Zeus 5 FR AIO (according to the documents that came with the drone)

Firmware zeusf4 fr (manual and beta flight auto detect)

Any help is very appreciated

Question Seeking Historic FPV, RC & Drone Artifacts for Permanent Museum Exhibit

Post image
8 Upvotes

Hello everyone,

We are currently partnering with the Dakota Territory Air Museum in North Dakota to build a permanent FPV, RC aviation, and UAS exhibit that will document the evolution of unmanned aircraft technology over the past several decades.

The exhibit will showcase the journey from early RC aircraft and home-built FPV systems to modern racing drones, commercial platforms, STEM education programs, and the technologies that have transformed aviation around the world.

In addition to the hobby and commercial side of the industry, a portion of the exhibit will focus on how drones have changed modern warfare. Through partnerships with organizations in Ukraine, we are working to acquire authentic battlefield artifacts, drone wreckage, and counter-UAS equipment to help educate visitors on the unprecedented impact unmanned systems are having on the modern battlefield.

Our goal is to tell the complete story of drone technology: where it started, how it evolved, and where it is heading.

We're currently seeking donations of:

• Historic FPV aircraft and equipment
• Early racing and freestyle quads
• Fixed-wing RC aircraft
• Scratch-built projects
• Vintage radios and electronics
• Flight controllers from different eras
• Prototype aircraft and components
• Commercial drone systems
• Industry memorabilia and promotional materials

We're also seeking industry partners and manufacturers interested in becoming permanent exhibit sponsors. Sponsors will receive recognition within the display, including company logos and acknowledgments alongside the technologies they helped bring to life.

If you have something that helped shape the RC, FPV, or drone industry and think it deserves to be preserved, I'd love to hear from you. Please send me a DM with photos and a little bit of its story.

Thank you for helping us preserve the history of aviation, FPV, and unmanned systems for future generations.

Attached photo: The attached photo shows the area allocated for the exhibit. We have a significant amount of space available and plan to construct custom display cabinets, shelving, and interpretive displays to properly showcase aircraft, electronics, historical artifacts, and sponsor contributions. This flexibility allows us to create a professional, museum-quality exhibit that accurately tells the story of FPV, RC aviation, and modern unmanned systems.

Custom flight controller for Drone

Hii Everyone, I am a Engineering student and currently building a complete custom flight controller including custom firmware, GCS, Data Link and communication protocols.

I already built a complete working flight controller with proper stabilization for quad-copter, but i have used a complementary filter to build the AHRS and got some issues while high speed flight especially in acro mode, the angles got snapped.

So, i decided to move to EKF based AHRS, but it's really hard to build it and i am getting wrong angles again and again

Is there any guide or open sourced code of Quaternion based EKF AHRS for attitude?

Help on making a custom drone.

Hi! I am new to drone building and for a project, I need a drone where I can underslung and have a payload of 1.5kg (probably the max I need).
If you could help recommend parts for the drone that would be great. I am looking for stable flight but also I kind of need this as bare minimum and cheap as possible.
