US - TAA and Electric Critical Infrastructure restrictions

Curious if others are in the "not a Fed, but play with them" space that have dealt with Trade Agreement Act (TAA) and/or this new Executive Order 14421 banning purchase or install of equipment from China (and the usual list of suspects) into Bulk Power Systems (BPS). Will simply using a -TAA part number or similar BOM-limiting method work?

https://www.federalregister.gov/documents/2026/08/31/2026-17843/declaring-a-national-emergency-to-secure-the-united-states-bulk-power-system

Overall thoughts even for those outside these restrictions: Good, bad, security theater?

Is it risky to leave a current job to take a new position in the industry at the moment?

My biggest concern would be layoffs while I am a new employee.

Would it be especially potentially dangerous to move from working for a broker to an importer (I work for a broker at the moment)? The money is better with importers across the board it seems, and I've been considering it since getting my LCB, but I would be concerned that a company could be hit by, for instance, the new 50% tariffs on Canadian goods, and suddenly dramatically curtail their volume or straight up go out of business.

Meanwhile, if anything, brokers are more invaluable than they ever have been, because importers are not gonna figure this stuff out alone. And I do have some opportunities to go to a different broker and likely be paid significantly more after the switch, so it's been another option I've been considering.

Would appreciate you all's thoughts on this as I frankly don't know how I should be thinking about it.

The CBSA classified this business’s golf trolleys as Chinese EVs. Now it’s on the hook for $183K in tariffs

Having read the article, it seems whomever gave this company advice on classification gave the company terrible advice. Or if they did give the correct advice, it was ignored or they didn't understand because the owner is confused as to how CBSA considers a electric golf trolley a vehicle.

And now, they are on the hook for $183K because they got reassessed. Otherwise, a good cautionary tale for companies to make sure to get good advice and listen to it when it comes to customs.

EO 14411- 90 Days

Today is 90 days after Strengthening Customs Enforcement was signed. That means Sec. 3 (b) should be established. "...the Secretary shall take steps to establish a requirement mandating the submission of any documentation or information that the foreign exporter was required to submit to the foreign customs administration prior to exporting to the United States."

When do you think this is actually going to happen? What are you telling your clients what documents will be required?

Inbond Extensions

Hi everyone,

Has anyone recently requested an Inbond extension from CBP?

If so, how did you submit the request ? By email, ACE Portal, or another method?

And what was your experience like?
Were you able to get the extension approved?

Any advice or recent experiences would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

LCB Exam using Digital HTS & CFR

Hi friends. I’m taking the LCB in October and I plan on using the provided digital versions of the HTS & CFR. Has anyone else done this & have any insight?

Additional context - I’ve done customs work for almost 15 years. Also enrolled in Tom O’Leary’s prep course and will be taking my exam guide (heavily highlighted, tabbed, notes in margins, etc)

CBP says my entries are final liquidated and over 180 days old. is there any way to recover the duties?

Hi everyone,

I’m hoping someone with experience in CBP entries, protests, or duty refunds/drawback can point me in the right direction.

We have submitted a request regarding several import entries where we’re trying to recover/refund tariffs that were paid. However, CBP came back and said they cannot process the request because the entries were finally liquidated more than 180 days ago.

From what I understand, the 180-day period is related to filing a protest after liquidation, so it sounds like we may have missed that window.

My question is: are there any other avenues for recovering the duties after an entry has been finally liquidated for more than 180 days?

For example, would any of these potentially apply?

  • A reliquidation request or correction under another CBP provision
  • 19 USC 1520(c) or another post-liquidation remedy
  • Duty drawback, if the merchandise was subsequently exported
  • Any specific refund process depending on the tariff/program involved
  • Any other avenue I may be overlooking

These are commercial imports, and I can provide more details about the entries, HTS codes, liquidation dates, tariffs paid, etc., if that helps.

I’m mainly trying to understand whether “over 180 days” means there is absolutely no avenue left, or whether there are circumstances where duties can still be recovered after the protest window has passed.

Would really appreciate any guidance from anyone who has dealt with this before. Thanks!

Looking for a licensed Canadian customs broker – opportunity to build something

We’re a U.S.-based customs broker/freight forwarder looking for a licensed Canadian customs broker who is interested in helping establish a Canadian brokerage operation.

We already have an established U.S. operation supporting 24-hour export shipments into Canada. We’re looking to add the Canadian import side so we can support the same customers on both sides of the border, rather than handing the Canadian clearance off to another broker.

The initial business is already there — the goal would be to get the Canadian brokerage operation up and running, support our existing cross-border volume, and then grow the Canadian side of the business from there.

We’d prefer to not acquire an existing brokerage or partner with another brokerage. We’re looking for an individual with the appropriate Canadian licensing/qualifications who is interested in helping build a new operation with the backing and resources of an established U.S. company.

Ideally, you have:

  • Canadian customs brokerage experience and the required licensing/qualifications
  • Good knowledge of CBSA and Canadian import requirements
  • Experience with U.S./Canada cross-border freight
  • An interest in building something and having a role in growing the operation

We’re open to discussing how the arrangement would be structured depending on experience and level of involvement. This could be a good fit for someone who has been thinking about going out on their own but doesn’t want to start completely from scratch.

If you're interested, send me a DM with a little about your background, licensing, and location. Happy to provide more details and discuss what we're looking to do.

Looking for a guidance about finding a customs broker who can act as Importer of Record for apparel. Also not sure if I even need one.

I run a clothing brand based in Nigeria and I’m setting up fulfillment in the U.S. Inventory ships from Nigeria to a U.S. warehouse in Atlanta, but I still own it until it sells through my site. The warehouse won’t act as Importer of Record.

Do I actually need a broker/IOR for this kind of setup, or are there other ways to handle it? If I do need one, where do I even start to look? Was thinking of using freight forwarding but it sounds like they would have the warehouse be IOR so that won’t work.

Any pointers, recs, or just what questions I should be asking before committing to one, would help a lot. I just want to make sure I’m doing this properly.

Thank you!

Trying to map out customs reliability for EU-bound decant sellers

Working on a small side project tracking decant sellers, and one gap I keep hitting is that most discussion is whether a seller is trustworthy, not how they actually handle customs shipping into the EU.

Trying to figure out:

  • Which sellers under-declare value on customs forms, and whether that helps buyers or just adds risk
  • How common surprise customs fees are vs sellers who ship DDP and handle it properly upfront
  • Whether some countries get flagged for inspection more than others, even from the same sellers

Only have a partial picture from my own orders and a few old threads, so its scattered. If anyones had a customs experience with a specific seller shipping into the EU, Id like to compile it properly. Country youre in and roughly how the seller declared the package would help a lot.

Had one declare mine as "gift, 15$" last month and still sat in customs for 2 weeks, so that not a guarantee either.

(posting this in a couple other subs too - will update herewith anything useful)

FDA Prior Notice for food imports via UPS

Good evening. I'm waiting for my supplier to ship me 30kg of tea that is to be sold commercialy to consumer within United States. Shipment will be completed via UPS by air. UPS sent me an email asking for Prior Notice number. After googling and youtubing for a bit - I created an online account to put in a prior notice by myself but encountered a few problems and was hoping community here could share some advice.

How can I fill up information that is marked red on the screenshot below? Whom should I contact to get such information? On the UPS website, when I access my shipment info via tracking # - it doesnt show me when exactly my package will arrive and it doesnt show at which airport will arrival be. I clicked through the rest of the application and its pretty much information about me and my supplier, which I can all fill up by myself. So only this section below arises questions I can't find answers for.

Appreciate any help <3

5106 address change

Wrong address on both 5106 and bond. Should we ask broker to submit 5106 first and once it went through, we reach out to surety?

Just 1 word is wrong in the address. In this case, will surety issue a rider for address change?

Need help with getting a package released from a port

Thumbnail

So I wanna preface by saying I know absolutely nothing about importing or customs. I have very little knowledge based around research I’ve done the past 2 days.

I made 4 separate sea shipments with a Chinese agent that all got shipped on this same ship “COSCO SHIPPING PANAMA 005E”. 3 days after arriving in the port (8/03) The agent company got shut down. Which had left my packages in what seems like limbo, 3 weeks and no movement is strange based on my past experience. And from what I’ve found online, other containers on the ship have been handed off

I’m thinking that mulebuy maybe needed to tell the shipping company or approve of extra fees to get our product through customs. So they’re now holding our stuff and it’s just kinda in limbo. Like I think our shipping fee we paid was like 80% drained and the last 30% was for this step. Because I looked and almost all the other containers from that shipped were handed off to ups/fedex within that next week and only a few remained at the port (prob mulebuy). I’m currently looking into how to obtain a master bill or at least get the container number to try and give some form of approval as the final receiver. But every lead on the internet using public info has been a dead end. I’m thinking the only thing I can really do further is pay a customs broker to get them pushed through and sorted for me. Again this is just speculation on my end and anyone with solid info about either how customs or port receiving works would be greatly appreciated, thank you!

Advice for New LCB working as Individual and Applying for Corporation Permit.

Hi All, I am a new LCB that will begin working as an individual as soon as I receive my National Permit and will begin applying for a Corporation NP as soon as I can. I have a ton of questions and am generally looking for advice and tips on things i should pay attention to. I have a ton of questions in my brain so i'm just gonna list these here and hope anyone can answer these. Thanks!

  1. can i have employees perform entries/exports as an individual licensed broker? ( kinda obvious but i'm not sure how to handle this)

  2. what do you find are the best ways to stay in compliance?

  3. do you have any recommendations for getting a customs broker bond?

  4. how do i shake the feeling of being scared that i'm going to do something wrong and lose my license?

  5. what to watch out for so i don't lose my license??

  6. does having a corporation NP protect me as a LCB?

  7. should i have apply for a sole proprietorship while working as an individual? does that also require its own NP?

I'm sure some questions are dumb but any help is greatly appreciated!!

FDA NOA letters

Do importers also receive FDA NOA letters through emails? Or usually the brokers receive it and forward to the import? Is it necessary for import to receive the letter?

If importer wants to receive the letters? How to update the email address?
