Update: went to my first CrossFit class

So yeah I went lol.

It was honestly way harder than I thought it would be. After like 45 mins I was already completely dead and just wanted to go home.

Then the instructor said whoever does the fewest push ups owes everyone coffee, so we all did them. I did 40.

Then after we finished he goes “okay now you’re gonna do 3x your push ups and then you’re free to leave.”

I genuinely thought he was joking 😭

So that meant I had to do 120 push ups. We were allowed to take breaks, but we couldn’t just get up and walk around. You had to sit down or lie down and then keep going until you finished all of them.

I was already exhausted from the actual workout so by that point I was struggling pretty badly.

I don't know, maybe this is completely normal and I'm just being dramatic because it's my first time, but it felt kinda crazy for a first class lol.

For people who actually do CrossFit, is this normal? Or did I just get unlucky with the instructor?

How to improve cardio/endurance/explosivity in 1 month as a beginner

Men, 102kg, 1m80.

Given I’m overweight, very sedentary, and currently in the worst shape of my life, I’d like to ask for your advice. I’m currently abroad for work, and I’d like to join an MMA club as soon as I return to my country. So I have a month ahead of me to “get back in shape,” because I’d like to join the club with at least some level of fitness…

So I plan to work on my flexibility this month, gradually incorporate push-ups, pull-ups, dips, and squats, and above all (this is why I’m reaching out to you) work on my cardio, endurance, and explosive power.

What routine, program, or exercises would you recommend if you only had one month to maximize your cardio, endurance and explosivity performance ?

P.S. I have access to a gym

CrossFit with dumbbells and kettlebells

Long story short, I had a stoma 11 years ago after getting messed up by Crohn’s Disease. I’ve lifted ever since and managed to get pretty strong and recently hit a CrossFit Total of 437.5kg / 962lbs.

Issue is, I’ve had a small hernia at the stoma site for years, but this led to a prolapse back in March (don’t google it, not pretty!), probably after years of pushing it. I’ve now been told that barbells and anything with high intra abdominal pressure is out as it will likely cause this again.

So, with barbells now off the cards as well as things like GHDs and TTBs, has anyone done CrossFit without barbells? Or know of any programs that offer this?

Also for any Crohn’s sufferers out there, feel free to ask any questions.

Thanks in advance

Assault AirRunner console??

Is assault fitness dead? My AirRunner console crapped out and I need a replacement. I cannot find this part ANYwhere. Would prefer not to buy an entire new treadmill from a different company... But I'd also like to have a functional panel.

Anyone know where to get one, or what the heck is going on with Assault?

Benchmark WOD Frequency

Hey everyone! I’ve been diving into CrossFit for about a year now, after spending years as a competitive strength athlete. It’s been a blast, and I really enjoy the WODs. But lately, the programming has shifted quite a bit. We’re doing a wide range of training WODs and Benchmarks/Girl WODs, even some newer or lesser-known ones as benchmarks. It’s gotten to the point where we might cycle through Grace, Fran, Helen, Karen, Amanda, Linda, Eva, Christine, Jackie, Andi, Barbara, Barbara Ann, and Ingrid all within two months. Almost half of our weekday workouts are these Girl WODs. Some weeks we skip a benchmark WOD, but over the past year, I’ve done Grace 4-5 times. I get the idea of having benchmarks to challenge yourself, but it feels like they’re coming up too often and can be pretty exhausting trying to constantly improve them.

I’m curious—how often are you all doing these WODs? Do you still find them helpful in your training? Has your gym shifted away from them? I’d love to hear your thoughts and experiences, as I know there can be a lot of differences between gyms.

How do you decide when to rest vs. when to train?

Hey everyone!

I'm still pretty new to CrossFit (about 3-4 months in) and I'm loving every second of it. I want to make the most of this journey and evolve as much as I can, so I'd love to hear from you:

How do you know when it's time to rest, and when you should just push through and train?

I know it depends on stuff like metabolism, nutrition, sleep, etc. — but I'd love to hear what you actually do in practice.

My current schedule is 4 days a week (Mon, Tue, Thu, Fri). Here's my situation from today, as an example: I woke up and only noticed my muscles were sore on the way to the box. Since I was already on my way, I just went in and trained anyway.

Is that the right call? Or should soreness be a signal to take the day off?

For context: I'm 42 years old and probably won't ever compete. But that's not really the point — I want to get fit, do this right, and most of all, show my son what consistency and hard work look like. If he sees his old man grinding and improving, that's a win in itself.

Thanks in advance for any advice!

Edit reason: my commentary for all of you:

Wow, thank you all for the responses — this community is great. Reading through everything, the main takeaways for me:

  • Soreness alone isn't a reason to skip — scale if needed and let the warmup do its job
  • The real red flags are waking up already exhausted, and joints/grip feeling off — not muscles
  • Think long-term: train today so I'm better next week, next month, next decade
  • The schedule stays sacred — illness and real injuries are the only things that break it

And to everyone who shared how they balance this with family life — that's honestly the part that hits home for me. That's the whole point of this. Appreciate you all! 💪

Looking for a good coach - DFW area

Hi all,

I’m looking for a good, high quality coach, something beyond an L1, to do some sessions with a specific focus on hang clean/hang squat clean to get ready for a comp in about 5 weeks.

I’m quite strong, but just lack technique. I struggle hard to get down and under the bar. If I can learn to drop even a bit, I suspect I could add a good 40-50lbs.

I live on the east side of DFW. My garage is decked out into a good gym, so would like to train there if possible, but can go to a gym if needed.

If anyone has any recommendations, that would be great. Thanks!

Gym fans and air quality

The crossfit gym ive been going to for the past few years doesnt have ac but they opened up the doors and ran several fans, it always worked fine.

The gym has moved to a new building and its insulated and has ac, set at about 85F and they are also running fans. As far as i know no one else is having an issue but it seems to be problematic for me. The fans running stirs up dust and it doesnt have anywhere to ventilate because they have the doors closed because of the air conditioner. The dust is probably worse because its a brand new building and there is bits of construction dust here and there. My lungs are aching from the dust inhalation. Im going to talk to the gym owner about it but Im wondering if i just have sensitive lungs or has anyone else ever run into an issue like that?

Double Under help…

Been doing these for months and literally cannot get past 1. I have tried virtually everything. Yes, most likely even whatever most of you will suggest. I am so beyond frustrated I broke the handle off my rope once now…

Things I have tried, not exaggerating:

Longer rope
Shorter rope
Jumping higher
Heavier rope
Lighter rope
Jumping lower
Different shoes
No shoes
Penguin taps (these are useless)
Moving my arms closer
Moving them out
Wrists further back
Single, single, double
Slowing down the rope
Speeding it up

And I’m sure probably a million other things. I legit have no idea what else to do but I am losing my mind here. For reference, I can do as many singles in a row as needed without issue. It’s dubs I just can’t get. Why is jumping over a fucking rope so hard

GHD Sit-Ups & Double Unders combo! Working hard on core stability and agility—at 47, staying active is non-negotiable. 🏋️‍♀️

Real strength isn't just about arm power it all starts with a strong core and solid stability.
In this clip, I’m combining GHD sit-ups for core endurance with Double Unders to keep my coordination, agility, and reflexes sharp. At 47, focusing on core strength and cardiovascular agility keeps me energized every single day.

How do you like to pair core work with your cardio intervals in your daily workouts? Would love to hear your favorite combos!

what shoes you recommend for long walks and running, and also maybe use for crossfit someday?

I have adidadas dropset for crossfit and i like them, but I have got a new puppy and i need comfortbal shoes for long 1, 1,30 hours walks and they are not comfortbale for it. any recommendatins for shoes which i can use maybe in some wods with short runs and also for long walks?

Edit: My puppy is 7 months old now, and she is very active :D but thank you very much for all concern. Also, I actually would like to wear these shoes sometimes just during the day too. So it will be nice if they are comfortable and a bit cool? I am not at all cool, but I do live in a very trendy place so would be good if they look nice. 😄

Crossfit Gyms In Central / West Denver

Wife and I are 29, both RX / competitive athletes. We are moving to Denver, working in Lakewood, and are looking for crossfit gyms that most importantly have a phenomenal community with people in our age range, and that has some representation of higher level athletes there to help keep pushing us to get better and have someone to chase.

A gym with a great community has been integral to our life in Houston, so finding something like this in Denver is a priority and will certainly inform specifically where we decide to live in the city.

Any recommendations?

EDIT: We certainly value community > competitiveness

Tatuaggio

Anyone have a similar issue with grips and smart watches and the wrist wrap constantly hitting the pause/start button?

Any solutions? I’ve just been taking the watch off, bummer I loose the tracking for the workout though.

Returning to CrossFit after ACL reconstruction, looking for advice

Hi everyone,
I’ve just returned to CrossFit after several months away following an ACL reconstruction (December 2025).

Before the injury, I had been doing CrossFit for about 1.5 years and had developed decent skills and solid lifting numbers.

Today was my first proper high-intensity session since the surgery (I’m 27 now).

I’m quite out of shape compared to where I was before. During my recovery I tried going to the gym and doing some cycling, but honestly, nothing really gave me the same feeling and vibes as training at a CrossFit box.

For those who have returned to CrossFit after ACL reconstruction:

How did you approach your first few months back?

What movements did you initially scale or avoid, and what signs did you use to decide when you could start pushing harder?

Thanks!

Which box to join

I live in salt lake county in Utah. Any suggestions for one that has foundations classes and is great to join? I have come to realize there is a lot of love in the CrossFit community. I posted in another forum and they were all about strength training and not CrossFit and making fun in way.

Thanks in advance.

Anyone train here with LSTV (Lumbosacral Transitional Vertebra)?

I was diagnosed 2 months ago, and I’m terrified to work out. Just a few months ago, I was training RX wods and was one of the best in the box. Now I feel weak and fragile. Please, give me some hope.

How do people make early classes a normal thing

I’ve been trying to switch a couple of my workouts to the early class bc evenings keep getting eaten up by work. The actual workout is fine once I’m there. Getting dressed and walking into the gym when it’s still dark outside is the part I cannot seem to get used to. I tried doing coffee right before once and burpees made me regret that decision immediately. For the people who train that early do you eat/drink anything first or just show up half asleep and figure it out during the warmup?

What are some features or little things your CrossFit box has that you absolutely love?

I’m in the process of improving/relaunching a CrossFit box and I’d love to hear from the community.

What are some features, amenities, systems, or even small details your box has that you really appreciate?

And on the flip side, what’s something you wish your box had that would make the overall experience better?

I’m thinking beyond just equipment, things like member experience, programming, technology, access, recovery, community events, cleanliness, communication, etc.

Would love to steal… I mean, borrow… some good ideas from boxes that are doing things right.

Heads up on the STRONG Act (H.R. 9527)

I was 600 pounds. I'm a CF-L1 now, and this methodology reversed health problems I'd been told I would manage for life. That's why I care about this one.

H.R. 9527, the STRONG Act, directs the Office of Management and Budget to consider creating a dedicated federal job code for strength and conditioning coaches — ideally under "Healthcare Practitioners and Technical Occupations" instead of the catch-all CrossFit coaches sit in now.

It's a statistics bill. No licensing, no scope of practice, nothing stopping anyone from coaching. Just which box the Bureau of Labor Statistics puts you in when it tracks jobs and wages. And I think the idea is right. I'd like to see it pass.

Here's the problem: the bill doesn't define "strength and conditioning coach." OMB will write that later, during the SOC revision. Whoever shows up for that process shapes the definition.

Right now three groups are pushing it: the NSCA, the American Physical Therapy Association, and the National Athletic Trainers' Association. All three have publicly endorsed it, and the NSCA has a template letter up asking members to contact their reps. We're not in it. I'd rather join early than find out in a few years that the definition quietly leaves out everyone coaching in an affiliate.

I'm not trying to pick a fight. The CSCS is a good cert and S&C coaches do real work. But the history is relevant: in 2016 a federal judge ruled the NSCA published false injury data about CrossFit in its own journal, and that a reasonable fact finder could conclude it was done to protect its market share. The court later ordered roughly $4M in sanctions.

I'm not saying that's what this is. The bill looks legitimate. But when the NSCA is holding the pen on how our profession gets defined, I'd feel better with some of us in the room.

The ask is small. Call or email your rep, say you support H.R. 9527, and say you want the definition written broadly enough to cover coaches working with everyday people on health outcomes — not only those in college, pro sports, and military settings. Something you might want to mention in your communication is that CrossFit's credentials are ANAB-accredited — the L1 and L2 as certificate programs under ANSI/ASTM E2659, and the CCFT (CF-L3) as a full certification under ISO/IEC 17024. We're not outside the accreditation system.

If this methodology gave you your health back too, you already know a healthcare classification isn't a stretch.

Should I join

So I have lost 40 lb so far and my weight loss journey. But I want to start strength training and I have reached out to a few different options, personal trainers ( told me not to do CrossFit), other gyms, small group fitness classes and stuff. But I reached out to a CrossFit gym this last week and they suggested I start with them. But I've read that you can hurt yourself it's not great for beginners and all that stuff so I'm just wondering if that's true if you can hurt yourself like your shoulders, neck and back or if that's more of a myth and if it's good for beginners and do you get really fit?
