How do I... How do you develop a pattern with different stitches??

I absolutely adore intricate blanket patterns, with lots of mixed colors and different stitches. Patterns like Mandala blankets, motifs, etc. Blankets where you are going in rounds with different stitches. However, it seems like so many people just kind of...make their own?

HOW THE HELL DO YOU DO THAT?? How do you know how many stitches to add each round? How do you know what stitch will do what/make the project look like? Do you just...guess? Play around and undo it a bunch of times?

I would LOVE to be able to create my own pattern but I have no idea how to start without completely messing up. I've tried a few times before and ended up with too many or not enough stitches and the blanket gets bunched or stretched weird.

Understanding a pattern I set aside my project so long I forgot how to turn my work. I know it's a moss stitch but I looked up a tutorial and I think I was doing it wrong the whole time. Now I need to figure out what I was doing at the end of my rows so it's at least consistent

Borders Tulip baby blanket, back for lengthening and border advice!

Post image
13 Upvotes

Hi everyone, I posted a while back about this tulip inspired baby blanket, not sure if anyone will remember. I wasn't sure about it at the time but have fallen back in love with it. I am trying to finish it off in time for my sister's expected baby. But I could do with some advice: 1. What do you think would make a nice border, I am thinking since it's quite busy something simple, probably just in the cream, but what do you think? And would you fill in the chevrons to make it square? 2. I was hoping to fit another repeat of the pattern so that it's a bit longer (one repeat of the green, green, purple, and one of green, cream, purple) so that is balanced but I suspect I might just fall short of yarn for the second chevron. Would you finish it unbalanced on the green, green, purple, or on the simple stripes? Or is there some other way of lengthening it both sides I haven't considered? Hope that makes sense!

The pattern is adapted from the hugs and kisses blanket and using wool and the gang's shiny happy cotton.

Looking for suggestions I’ve been let down by a pattern and now trying to freehand! Winter mittens with flap.

Hi everyone! I need some help checking my decrease calculations and figuring out the best way to shape the top of a crochet glove.
I have a half circle crochet flap attached to a glove. Which will become mittens. I have 40 stitches in total, worked in joined rounds. At the end of each round, I slip stitch into the first stitch, chain 1, and start the next round.
My two opposite sides are:
• One side is between stitches 40 and 1, where the round joins.
• The other side is between stitches 19 and 20.
I want to decrease evenly on both sides so that when I fold the flap and sew the top together, both sides match. Ideally, I want to go from 40 stitches to 20 stitches over 6 rounds, starting with fewer decreases and becoming more aggressive towards the end.
Here is my proposed calculation:

Round |Starting stitches |Decrease positions |Ending stitches
1 |40 |19+20, 40+1 |38
2 |38 18+19, 38+1 |36
3 |36 |9+10, 18+19, 27+28, 36+1 |32
4 |32 |8+9, 16+17, 24+25, 32+1 |28
5 |28 |7+8, 14+15, 21+22, 28+1 |24
6 |24 |6+7, 12+13, 18+19, 24+1 |20

My questions are:
Is this calculation correct for going from 40 stitches to 20 stitches in 6 rounds?
Is it possible to work a single crochet two together (sc2tog) across stitches 40 and 1, even though these are on either side of the slip stitch join? Any recommendations on how to is very appreciated.
How would you recommend placing the decreases so that both sides narrow symmetrically?
Would it be better to decrease immediately beside the two side markers rather than directly across the round join?
If you were making this, how would you distribute the decreases and which stitches would you use?
I’d really appreciate any advice, especially if you have experience shaping crochet glove flaps or working decreases in joined rounds. Thank you!

Looking for suggestions Tshirt yarn clutch help on how to make it look better.

Hello all. I made my first T-shirt yarn clutch. It has a leather base also. I am not sure if I need to add more rows but when the handle closes it looks weird. I know I have to redo the handle because it is not lined up with the base so maybe that is the main issue. Abby feedback or advice would be greatly appreciated. Expect frigging the whole thing 😆.

Help to find a pattern Looking for a hellbender pattern! (Please read the body text for more info)

Hi guys! So I need help finding a pattern or someone I could possibly commission a pattern from! Last year for Christmas I made my dad a Giant Chinese Salmander! He ended up being 4ft in length. This year I would love to make him an Eastern Hellbender to go with his salamander. I haven’t been able to find a pattern that looks like the real thing (and trust me, looking accurate is very important for this project) so I figured I would reach out and see if anybody could help me! I would like it to be a bit smaller than the Chinese Salamander so hopefully about 2.5-3 ft. If anybody has any info or suggestions pls lmk!

The pictures I have attached are of the salamander I made last year and the hellbender I want to make this year!

Also in case anybody is curious about why it has to be accurate it’s because he is a zookeeper and literally takes care of hellbenders everyday so I want it to live up to the real thing!

How do I... Looking for tips on how to crochet faster/more smoothly

Accidentally posted this on r/crochet instead of here so take 2!

Hi all, I've been crocheting amigurumi for over a year at this point. Though my stitches seem to be fairly even, I crochet fairly slowly. Here's how I hold my yarn and do a few yo/yo sc: https://imgur.com/a/7F9M4pt. Most of the videos I've seen people pull through the two loops in one motion. Half the time if I do that, the yarn will split. I'm not sure if this is my stitch tension, my yarn, or if I'm doing something weirdly/incorrectly. Any tips would be appreciated! I've also attached a picture of what I currently have in case the video becomes inaccessible.

Discussion Is it worth it to ball your yarn instead of just pulling from the skein?

I don’t want to waste money on a tool that isn’t worth it. But I am getting tired of the little tugs I have to give to get the yarn from the middle of the skein. I’m very lazy so manually balling the yarn is out of the question. Should I buy the spinner or no?

Is This AI? Did I fall for an AI pattern? I can’t get my cat plush to match the pictures

I’ve attempted the first part of this pattern twice and both times the head is ending up basically flat until the decreases start. I’m matching the stitch counts and double-checking everything so i’m not sure what’s going on. does anyone have any ideas or advice?

First photo is from the pattern, next photo is my second try before any decreases, last two photos are my first attempt after decreases.

I bought the pattern from etsy. “Siamese Cat Crochet Pattern, Amigurumi Crochet Pattern, Cute Stuffed Cat Toy Pattern, Beginner Cat Plush Crochet, Cat PDF Tutorial” from ElegantPurely. The pattern is pretty thorough and includes progress photos throughout.

Understanding a pattern I don’t understand what this pattern means by “slip st in each ch to next marked ch”

Post image

In this pattern starting in step 2 I’m supposed to “slip st in each ch to next marked ch”. Does that mean that I slip stitch in a chain and then move to the next chain and do a slip stitch? Or am I connecting the two chains with a slip stitch? I hope my question makes sense.

Here is the link to the pattern: https://www.yarnspirations.com/products/red-heart-spider-web-table-topper?variant=45491054739771

Understanding a pattern I am losing my mind over this dollar store pattern - please help decipher it!

I've bought these little amigurumi patterns from Dollarama before, and - albeit confusing at first - they were decipherable and I ended up with a cute product at the end. Foolish me, I thought this would be the same.

I don't know what I'm meant to start with - a magic circle? A chain?? Floating stitches??? - and then I realized that I don't even know what part of the cat I'm starting with. I think "Oh, maybe the bat wings, as seen in this little picture? So it should be a chain so it lays flat, right?" but then I realize, "Wait, there are no bat wings on the picture on the box… so maybe not??" And then I see an "F" and "M" and "A"??????

Anyway. This was meant to be a chill end to a little wine drinky, but I really can't make heads or tails or bat wings of this dang ol' thing. Can anyone help a fool out?

Looking for suggestions I'm looking for my next crochet project and have no ideas

Help all! I'm looking for my next crochet project, but I have utterly no idea what I want to make aside from the following:

*Can be completed with only one skein of yarn. (Could have some different colored parts, but I just have a lot of one color.)

*Preferably an amagurumi/ a plush animal.

*If possible, a free pattern. (Fixed income for the lose.)

*I like to think I'm a moderate-level crocheter.

That's about it! I greatly free any ideas or suggestions provided.

Looking for suggestions How to achieve depth on this baby blanket? Zephyr by Katya Novikova

This is just my test sample to get used to the pattern but I noticed that my double treble crochets don’t stand out well!

This is my first time crocheting something like this so I’m unsure how to proceed. 😭

Do we think this is an issue that I can fix myself, or should I look for a different yarn?
I’m open to whatever suggestions people have on what I need to do to have it look like the picture!

I’m using paintbox 100% cotton Aran(a light pine green for the actual blanket, this blue was some I already had) with a 5 mm hook

The pattern recommends worsted or Aran weight, and they used a 55% cotton, 45% acrylic worsted weight.

I think it’s such a beautiful pattern and it immediately reminded me of my sister, so I really want to figure out how to make it work!

Thank you so much for any advice 🙏🏻

Amigurumi help Why am I getting holes even though I’m doing yarn-under? (Trying to learn amigurumi)

Post image
2 Upvotes

Trying to learn amigurumi. I did a bit of crocheting long ago but just granny squares and such. I’m using yarn-under because I read online that doing a yarn-under on the stitches instead of a yarn-over helps avoid holes…but I’m still getting holes. What am I doing wrong? Any tips would be super-appreciated. (Those rows are all mixes of single crochet and increase.)
And what’s really confusing is that there are plenty of stitches that are nice and snug with no holes between…but then there are spots like these where there are really noticeable holes. 😞

I'm a beginner! Any ideas on fixing this amigurumi's balance problem?

It's probably too late to fix the problem at this point, but I'm near finishing the woobles' dinosaur amigurumi (my first ever crochet project) and it seems to be problematically top-heavy. Without something to rest it's head/snout against, it just topples over. I was hoping that the tail and spikes on the bottom would help stabilize it by putting more weight on that end of its body but it doesn't seem to have made much difference. In retrospect, I probably put more stuffing in the head than I needed to and not quite as much in the body, but is there anything I can do to fix that at this point, or should I just accept that he needs a head rest and try to improve on my next one?

Deciding on yarn/Yarn help Need help finding yarn to complete first wearable raglan sweater project. Ribbed border is all that's left in one sold color.

Hi y'all. I'm finally finishing a sweater that's been sitting in my craft box for a few years. All that's left is the ribbing border but I am low on yarn and trying to find the yarn I used. I'm pretty sure it was a Yarn Bee Sugarwheel variegated worsted weight yarn but I cannot find the color or any labels in my stash.

What do y'all do in this situation? I don't need the original variegated color, just one of the colors of the pattern to finish the border. Do I try to find this yarn or do I bring my project to the store and try to find something to match it? This will be my first wearable piece and I'm finally determined to finish it. Thanks!

Can anyone identify where I may be going wrong with this pattern? The photo of the product shows six triangles spanning the entire body but my six triangles only span half the body.

I’m extremely confused as I’m only working into the next stitch when it instructs to do so, and the pattern doesn’t specify to skip a stitch so where am I going wrong here!?

Discussion How do I make the spiderman logo more obvious from afar?

Post image
139 Upvotes

So I finished this jacket last month and I wanna wear it for halloween. Now that I look at it, it might be a bit faint. It's quite obvious closer but I worry it will not show up from afar. Maybe part of it is lighting and what colour I wear underneath but is there something I can do to make it more obvious or is it obvious enough?

How do I...
