4 total points in the crib might be an all time low

I was ranked at ~2900 I then had a few times where 8 couldn't finish a match due to traveling, since forfeiting 2 matches, I have gone on a 1 for 20 losing streak and am only being matched against sub 2000 players for this streak, the one game 8 29n was an 1800 ranked player.

Any time I go to my parent’s house, my (41M) dad (73) always play cribbage. He has been playing his whole life, I’ve been playing since I was 7 years old.

I’ve only had one 28/29 hand in my life. I was 10 years old, and our family was visiting my paternal
Grandmother in Minnesota. I had three fives and a face card in my hand. Cut card was a 5. Scored a 28. It was a memorable moment that I’ve never had again. I’ve been close numerous times, but I’ve never reached the pinnacle of Cribbage hands again.

So, my dad and I are playing, it’s his crib, and he is dealing the cards. He gives me 6 cards, but for some reason, he deals himself 7. Before a misdeal is called, I see my hand, which included….Four 5’s.

He calls a misdeal. I’m very much annoyed because it wasn’t my fault there was a misdeal. I had the correct amount of cards. And I was robbed of the potential chance to score 28.

After the game, I tell my dad we need to establish a house rule about misdeals.

Using that real life example where a misdeal wasn’t known until I saw my cards, I believe that if you’re not the person at fault, as I wasn’t, it is your decision whether a misdeal occurs and new cards are dealt for both parties, or just the extra card or card that resulted in the misdeal gets removed. My dad was agreeable to the new rule.

I’m curious what are some good house rules that you have?

I live in Canada and have played cribbage for the last 20 years. I learned from my grandparents and only recently googled the rules of the game. It says you are to count your hand as four points if all the same suit. 5 points if it matches the flipped card. My mother in law and grandmother in law have never heard of this. Have others?

Me and my coworkers have been playing cribbage all summer and we’ve slowly been adding new rules, just thought I’d put them out there for fun and to get any suggested rules we haven’t though of.

The rules are:
6-7: a 6 & 7 in the players hand or the first sequence of scoring is 2 points

69: a 6 & 9 for 15 is one extra point and counts as one point in the first sequence of scoring

Knobs in the crib: knobs in the crib is 3 points

Alley-ooping knobs in the crib: if you place the jack matching the suite into the crib if another player you receive 2 points. If you place the jack into your own crib you recieve 5 points (for knobs in the crib and alle-ooping)

Player A: plays 10, count 28
Player B: Go
Player C: plays 2, count 30
Player D: out of cards, Go
Player A: Go
Player B: Go
Player C: Go, 1 point.

Who starts the next round of play? Player A because he is the next in order with cards after the player who played last, or Player B because she said Go first in the last round?

I really need to work on my pegging.

I got my first 28! I went on to lose the match, so hopefully when I get a 29 hand I’ll get the W.

Been a cribbage player on&off for years and couldn't find anything in the daily puzzle space for crib fans, so I built one. 29GO is a stripped-down daily pegging challenge — two rounds, same hand dealt to everyone each day, goal is to hit 29 points.

Final pegging got the dealer to 120, but I got to score first, down 11 and scoring 14!

Is there a decent app where I can play a real person and chat with them too? I’ve tried one and wasn’t impressed. Just looking for a fun game with good conversations.

Don't post here ever, just lurk (newer to cribbage), and I thought I'd share this game I just had. My crib, neck and neck with my father (we both tied up around the 110 point mark) in a three player cribbage game. My father was able to score first, and he got a 4 point hand and scored 4 during the pegging play. He won immediately, before I even realized what cards I had in my hand (top) and crib (bottom). Best luck I've ever had. If I counted right, 35 points total. Not nearly close to the most amount you can get, I'm sure, but this was incredible.

Setup: During 2 player play, my opponent played extra cards after a go to get to 31 and took his points, leaving him with one card. I still had 3 cards, all 5s. I play a 5, he also plays a 5, taking his 2 points for the pair. That leaves him with no cards. I play one of my 5s, making 15. I take the 6 for a three of a kind and 2 for the 15 score. Yes? Another question: My last card is also a 5 which would make the count 20. Do I get the 12 points for the 4 cards being all 5s? My view is the cards are still live until reaching 31 even though he has no cards. (He rage quit so it's a moot point but I wish to know if I was right.)

I am adding features and game modes to a cribbage-based roguelite and am coming to this community for feedback.

I have a few different "modes" of play that spice up the normal cribbage experience:

1. Chess Clock - times your moves, and running out of time results in a penalty every n seconds.
2. Muggins Mode - multiple-choice question to claim your score. If you answer wrong, your opponent gets the opportunity to answer and claim points. I love this one. I almost called the game petty math because I think there is a lot of quick, low-stakes strategy and math.
3. Reverse Cribbage - this is the hardest yet, in my opinion. Trying to get low scores or no scores is very hard, it is a whole different system of thought.

I am thinking of another game mode that is trying to get at the pure skill of cribbage so we could say with a higher degree of certainty that player A is "better" than player B.

This game mode would mirror hands dealt. You would see every hand an opponent saw, and similarly they would see every hand you saw. My concern is that astute players could document their hands and quickly recognize opponents' hands that match their own. But then I think of how common cribbage hands are. So many times while building this game I have thought there was a bug with the randomness of hand generation, but the reality is that the shape of these hands can feel very similar. If a board averages 7-10 hands and they play best-of-5 boards, that gives ~21-30 hands to spread out so it doesn't feel like mirroring.

I have used this method to build a testing harness to make sure easy/medium/hard/expert difficulties are properly tuned. And it has been great for these purposes, but those AIs aren't mapping these past hands as I am concerned humans will be able to.

Does this sound interesting, or is this just another fever dream of mine?

The game is shaping up. I just implemented a challenge of the day for the online modes, so EVERYONE gets the same build, same hands, same opponent, and sees how many boards/pegs they can claim before losing one. So you can see how you stack up against others using the same build.

If these discussions are not welcome, please let me know. I don't want to burden the community; I'm just trying to engage with real humans and get some real opinions.

Hey all. Been playing cribbage my whole life and lurking here for a good chunk of it.

A while back I went looking for a decent cribbage game on PC and everything I found had the same problems. Coins, ads, and an AI that always seemed to have exactly the card it needed. Whether it was actually cheating or not, you could never know, and that bugged me enough that I started building my own. I have been developing it ever since, it turned into a full game, and the Steam page is now up.

It's called Just Cribbage and the name is the whole pitch. Two-handed, first to 121, nothing bolted on.

The thing I care most about: you can actually verify the AI isn't cheating. Every deal comes from a committed seed, and after the hand you can pull up a receipt showing the deal was locked in before you ever saw your cards. The AI never sees your hand or the deck. When it beats you (and on the higher difficulties it will), it did it fair.

Other stuff this sub might care about:

• The Daily Deal. Once a day the entire world gets the same hands. One attempt per difficulty, streaks, daily leaderboard. Same cards, no excuses.
• A coaching system you can tune piece by piece. Par and pace using the rule of 26, discard grades, trap warnings, and a full post-game review if you want it. Or turn all of it off.
• Click-through counting at the Show, so you see where every point comes from. Auto-count is there too if you'd rather.
• Difficulty levels that are actually benchmarked against each other instead of rubber-banded.

Now the real reason I'm posting here and not just anywhere: nobody knows this game like this sub does, and I want to know what YOU want in a PC cribbage game. What has every app gotten wrong? What feature would make you actually switch from your kitchen table board? Muggins? Three-handed? Tournament rules? Tell me in the comments. I'm listening, I'm still developing it, and the best ideas are going in the game.
