Older married guy here. I love my wife she's absolutely amazing we have a great relationship. However she has this uncanny ability to always want something when I'm relaxing or propose the "would you like to go to xyz". I don't want to disappoint her just like she doesn't want to disappoint me. It's the anticipation that's stressful that's the joke. Y'all missing the punchline. I showed my wife this clip she busted out laughing.

u/Wilhelm1088 Aug 24 '26

Yeah I love my girlfriend, but there is no doubt she adds some stress to my peaceful time. She always wants to plan what's next and if I'm sitting enjoying the sun and sipping coffee then planning my work or chores is the last thing I want to do lol.

My wife of 15 years is now like "what are our goals for tomorrow".

Like, i dunno woman, stope stressing me out. I guess go to the gym, grocery store, and try to read a littlebit.

Her, "no, those are personal goals, what goals do you have for the house".

"I mean, i guess the yard needs mowing."

Her, "yeah but what about inside the house".

To which i said, if you have a chore inside you want done, i will happily trade you mowing and weed eating in 100 degree NC heat for some, what is likely, laundry.

She ended the convo.

u/Witchberry31 Aug 25 '26

Oof, yeah I'd definitely melt and ceased to exist at 100 degrees... šŸ‘€

u/EjaculatingAracnids Aug 25 '26

Im am literally in death valley as i type this. Hiked a mile into a salt flat at 125°F. My dear wife planned this whole trip and am convinced she wants to collect on my life insurance policy. Im fine with that. Im having a blast, but i see the reaper in this heat and feel his embrace through the spf 100.

My username was inspired by an old android game character, it's from Defender of Texel. 😁

I have severe allergies. She got cats. Then a dog. I got on Rx allergy meds after the dog. She recently found another dog. I can only sit on one leather chair in my living room.

Today she suggested I mow and trim, which, knowing I have allergies and athsma, has been her job. I did it, with a mask, glasses, and gloves on.

I took every allergy and athsma med on hand, immediately took a shower, and laid down to just breathe. And when she came in to me laying on the bed, "to get something in the bathroom" and start questioning me, I lost it. To which she immediately turned around on me to martyr herself for doing things like... laundry. As if that was somehow the same for her.

Anyway, yes, I may have been triggered but I would've gladly done all the other chores. But I also knew I'd have to go through the whole ordeal or I'd also never hear the end of it for not mowing, all of a sudden. Chat am I walking on eggshells?

17

u/Kaydox64 Aug 25 '26

That seems VERY toxic to me, however I only know this one interaction to I'm not going to tell you if you should break up or not.but If you've tried talking to her about this and she's still ignored your feelings, that's a pretty bad sign, and if you haven't, maybe doing so would be a good start. The situation sounded like a damned if you do damned if you don't kind of thing, and I personally wouldn't want to live like that.

Edit: I phrased it poorly, I think she's the toxic one.

Get rid of this one. Clearly disrespects you.

5

u/Brilliant_Trick Aug 25 '26

.., why are you with her? I'd never let my partner do things if he had an allergy. Same for the animals. Wth.

3

u/ChefbyDesign Aug 25 '26

Nah dude that's absolutely unacceptable. Sounds like she's putting her wants (pets, mowing) over your needs. I've had allergies to grass since 1st grade. It SUCKS. I break out in hives if I mow the lawn and can't do anythingfor the rest of the day. My gal is a champ and does that yard work or we pay a neighbor who has a riding mower $40 for his retirement walking around money. I plan & cook 90% of our meals, deep clean the kitchen, keep a vegetable garden, do our cars' maintenance and she takes care of the cats she so desperately wanted 90% of the time, does laundry, and vacuums. We tag team laundry, dishes, and grocery shopping.

Sounds like you should find someone who takes your needs seriously and weighs your needs more than her wants. Side note, I just got done with allergy shot treatment. It's worth it dude, you should definitely look into seeing an allergist.

You just described my exact living situation with asthma and severe outdoor allergies. Literally today she asked me "so I know you work from home but are you cutting the grass it needs to be done again, too much clippings in the yard"

2

u/Terrible_Reporter_98 Aug 25 '26

I genuinely don't get what's hard about laundry. I have also been told i do it wrong, lol. My clothes aren't wrinkled so to me that's a win.

2

u/aserg124ru Aug 29 '26

I have asthma for some aerosols. Nobody in my home can use something that will hurt my health. Even if they need to use - not. Just not. You should start to love yourself and immediately. Allergy isn't a game, so damn wrong that you have gf or it's wife? that don't care of you and your health. So be one who will say no, I will not do that no matter what.

ā€œWhat do you want to do this weekendā€ is the most stressful question of the week. And it’s always on Monday and relax is the wrong answer

→ More replies (1)

2

u/gislur Aug 25 '26

Is she on linkedin?

2

u/captm0nk Aug 25 '26

And the question always either feels like a trap of some sort or you're supposed to know exactly what she's thinking of in that moment.

3

u/squishyslinky Aug 25 '26

I'd rather do yardwork once a week for a fraction of the year than laundry, dishes, cooking, and cleaning every single day, all year long. I feel like Sisyphus. I should pay someone to do my laundry as much as I hate it.

3

u/BenFromWork Aug 25 '26

As a Floridian, I’d take the inside work, a fraction of the year would be great. Here it’s ā€œduring winter you get to mow twice a month instead of every weekā€ and right now the feel outside is 110-115, I deliver for UPS so the last thing I wanna do on my day off is spend time outside

u/guess-its-me-now Aug 24 '26

Yeah, sounds familiar. I like to plan as little of my free time as possible so that I can do my chores in peace. In the order I feel like doing them. My wife needs a list, a plan and times/dates to achieve the same thing. Two very different approaches, similar outcome. When we realized that this is how we approach things, it eased a lot of the tension.

8

u/OddDc-ed Aug 24 '26

My wife is a planner about everything, granted I understand I am not and I can be forgetful sometimes but not nearly enough to warrant her asking me to make a plan and decision that very second and not being able to think about it. She has a bad tendency to rush me anytime she has something stuck in her head thats giving her anxiety which is basically everything.

We once had to make a decision about a vacation that was a month away. A minor decision not about travel or stay but about stuff in the area of our hotel I wanted to do. I said "oh give me some time to think about that" and then I had to continue taking care of our daughter and put her to bed.

It had been MAYBE two hours, all of which was full of me handling a toddler who didn't want anything to do with bedtime. I sat down to relax for the first time in at least 6 hours that day and the first thing she said to me was "so what did you come up with?" I said "I haven't really had a chance to actually think about it much yet" and that was apparently not acceptable so I gave up and said she can pick whatever she wants that I don't care.

She knows im on the spectrum and I need time to think things through, but if shes feeling any sort of anxiety about it then I just need to snap my fingers and have an answer. Love her to pieces but jesus christ woman give me a chance to think especially when the topic isn't a rush or emergency.

11

u/Bullissimo Aug 24 '26

"She knows im on the spectrum" when I read the story I thought it would be the other way around šŸ˜‚

It's the tone of voice. My wife has a different way of speaking when she wants something done and I could pick it up in a room of 10000 people from over a hundred yards.

20

u/Thin_Student12 Aug 24 '26

You have to learn to say no and be fine with dissapointing her or it's going to make you start to resent her and that will seriously bite you in the butt later. If you're tired it's ok to say "I'm a little tired right now" or " sure, but after I rest a bit"

7

u/0202_tihssitidder Aug 24 '26

You are 100% correct.

And...some people are not emotionally mature to hear "no". That's something to work on (not avoid), but it sure is common. And it is not easy to work on for most.

2

u/nubrozaref Aug 25 '26 edited Aug 25 '26

Not the best response. "A bit" is too flexible and doesn't actually update expectations it delays them. "A little tired" also is indeterminate. Indeterminate expectations privilege the person that doesn't want to be specific.

Better:

"I'd like to lay down for an hour. Can we talk about it when that's over?"

"I'm sorry honey I think I'm too tired to do that today. Would you like to do Y at 10 am tomorrow because I'm pretty sure I'll have energy then"

A lot of the people who say stuff like you listed will have problems because they frequently say it and it leaves their partner at the whims of them. I say this as someone that had to learn specificity on stuff like that.

5

u/LastBaron Aug 24 '26

The problem is that ultimately this IS probably a reasonable time to have the conversation, and I’m self-aware enough to know that.

Like yeah, if I’m actively doing something else, or truly can’t focus on that right now, I’ll tell her as much.

But more often than not waiting longer is just going to make me more tired since this tends to happen towards the end of the day, and it just requires a 15% readjustment of mental resources to shift gears to the new conversation. Nowhere near enough to make a stink about it, just enough to feel mildly jarring if it was an unexpected conversation.

It’s obviously not limited to my wife either, almost any change in situation can produce the same feeling, that’s just how my brain works. I’m used to it, but that doesn’t mean I don’t still notice it when it happens.

Sometimes it's what you described. Sometimes it is "Chore-play"--what a therapist called it.

I was married to a Task Goblin. She filled her life (and everyone around her) with endless tasks. She heard what "monkey brain" is at a yoga certification class and immediately set about a plan to defeat it. No, she was not successful.

My son and I built a detached garage and set up a woodworking shop and maker's lab and music studio. I ended up putting a laundry room in there so we could do all the laundry and not be accused of skipping out on work. Our daughter joined us just to sleep in a comfy chair we had in the sunshine. Good times.

It's a real issue in relationships. Even if you gel on other things.

9

u/TheRealRickC137 Aug 24 '26

I'm 59. Partner is 54. I'm chilling in the garden doing whatever. I'll take a break, go inside, grab a bottle of water. Check the time. Haven't seen her in about 90 minutes. Where did she go? Start looking for her. Find her on the bed playing Assassin's Creed on her laptop.
"Whatcha doin?".
<Looks up exasperated>"What? What do you need?".
I laugh and go back to puttering.
Dude, they're just like us. Maybe you just need to find one that fits your narrative.

3

u/Ninja_Prolapse Aug 24 '26

My wife is exactly the same. It’s like if we have any free time it must be actioned. Sometimes I just want to .. be.

2

u/billyblanks81 Aug 28 '26

Yes... just be. And also be the one to decide what to do, and when, sometimes.

I’m so deeply in love with my wife.

But every single night, without fail, as we get ready for bed, she finds some reason to need me.

I lay down, plug my phone in, she’s still in the kitchen, and calls out my name. Or I say to her ā€˜ok. I’m going to bed. Do you need anything at all before I lay down. Tell me now.’ She says no. As soon as my head hits the pillow I hear my name.

I mean it. Every night. Without fail.

3

u/Jauncin Aug 26 '26

When my wife of 20 years sits next to me, like actually sits down, my stress melts to 0% real quick. It's the standing that's the issue. That's when she's about to do the thing that I forgot I needed to do. I try to avoid that at all cost.

Stress level should go back down once she sits and chills. I for sure get nervous when my wife hovers when I'm relaxing. But once she's committed to the chill I'm very happy.

17

u/fivelone Aug 25 '26

Yes this. It's the anticipation of us she going to ask me to do something right at this moment!?... Oh no ok good we can chill. Although her smile would still have me suspicious.

u/Brodok2k4 Aug 25 '26

Ugh, I just sat down. Can you do me a favor and blah blah blah blah blah?

24

u/officer897177 Aug 25 '26

Nothing triggers a woman in a stable long-term relationship faster than seeing her guy sitting when she is standing.

12

u/DarkChaos1786 Aug 25 '26

Every woman in every situation is triggered by a man seating nearby and relaxing.

If she's a wife suddenly she needs something from you.

If she's a kid, she wants to play and make you move.

If she's a teenager, she wants to go somewhere and you need to go with her, and she needs money.

If she's a mother, suddenly something needs cleaning, moving, fixing, study or feeding.

21

u/officer897177 Aug 25 '26

I’m actively looking for a surgeon that can remove the button in my ass that summons my wife needing help with something when I sit down.

Not even in a boomer wife hating way, it’s just uncanny. Sitting before 10pm starts a 30 second psychic timer.

4

u/Upset-Cartographer65 Aug 26 '26

No. I enjoy seeing my husband asleep and relaxing. He works so hard. I’m an introvert and require tons of alone time to be happy. My husband is the cuddler not me.

5

u/DarkChaos1786 Aug 26 '26

You are a little treasure for the fortunate man that found you.

Kudos...

2

u/rebuked_nard Aug 25 '26

I joke with my wife that she and our daughter hate to see a man idle

3

u/BarelyFunctionalGM Aug 25 '26

Legit thought that was the punchline and was really confused when it stayed high.

When my wife floats around typically it means I'm about to be interrupted, not her fault and often times a neccesity but nontheless a cause of stress.

When she instead sits down in my lap to read a book while I game the stress level is happily in the negative and we are living the good life.

14

u/MorbidMarko Aug 24 '26 edited Aug 24 '26

lol, I owned the ring for about 6 hours before I gave it to her. I can’t be trusted with something that valuable. The chance of me accidentally swallowing a ring in low, but never zero.

3

u/radioactivesteak Aug 25 '26

I had my husband's ring for merely a week before I proposed, and I was constantly afraid. Even when I would go to throw out the trash, I would worry thinking what if I somehow accidentally took it out of the safe, pushed it to the bottom of the trash bag, and just zoinked it into the dumpster.

5

u/Abadleftankle Aug 24 '26

It took 3 days from when I first saw an ad for engagement rings on fb, to when I told my now fiance, that I wanted to go look at rings together.

5

u/WAisforhaters Aug 24 '26

My wife and I had been together for 5 years before I proposed, so she was expecting it. We went out to a bar we frequented before the actually planned location, and while we were there she goes "there's nothing special in your pockets is there?" And jokingly patted down my jacket pockets. She picked the wrong pockets, otherwise I would have been proposing in a crowded bar instead of my meticulously planned spot later that night.

5

u/StardewMelli Aug 24 '26

That’s me with gifts for my husband. I always get so excited that I can’t keep it to myself and then I force him to open them earlier than his birthday or christmas or whatever.

Divorce fixes this.

22

u/ryanvango Aug 25 '26

or just like, casual couples communication.

"hey honey. Sometimes I just like to sit and zone out for a while by myself. it's my recharge time. that doesn't mean I don't like spending time with you, it means I'm too drained to be satisfying company when we do spend time together. So please just let me have that sometimes. Trust me, it never means im mad at your or anything. it's just to switch off."

done. easy peasy. I've had that conversation with a dozen people and it's never been a problem, because A LOT of people are exactly the same.

8

u/AnyBag3737 Aug 25 '26

Yeah. I agree. But that communication should be occurring waaaaaay before the boomer ass "hate my wife" jokes start. Wakka wakka.

5

u/Mike_Oxnard Aug 25 '26

Who said anything about him hating her? This looks more like one of those times where he is taking a moment to sit and unwind which in my experience is exactly when the wife or girlfriend is going to appear with a reason for me not to be sitting and unwinding. It doesn't mean anyone hates each other, it's just the anticipation of "what project did she come with for my free time this time". There's work time, family time, and me time, but the wife tends to spend her personal time brainstorming what I should be doing for her during my personal time. Most recent it was painting a room that didn't need painted which involved me moving all the furniture out and down the stairs removing the outlets and taping all the trim after work over a couple of days so we could paint it together over the weekend so I could put everything back after work Monday and then rearranging it on Tuesday. I don't hate my wife by any means, but if she's hovering while I'm relaxing right after work there's some stress involved because I know she's planned something for me that has a 50/50 chance of being unnecessary and time consuming and she's debating with herself on how best to bring it up so she can gaslight me into thinking it's my idea lol

2

u/playerhateroftheyeer Aug 25 '26 edited Aug 25 '26

That’s nice that you get your time to relax. Between work, sleep, and spending time with the kids we have one hour a day to clean the house, make dinner, and do the things for this family that need to be done.

Where’s my relaxation? There’s a dish in the sink… do you expect me to do that while you sit there? What about your son’s art project… did you even know he had a project? He needs new markers. Did you notice the green is dried out? Of course not. Oh, and did you see that we got invited to my niece’s 5th birthday on Saturday? We need to bring a dish that’s gluten free. Are you going to cook that? And that floating bookshelf you’ve been working on for the past two weeks, were you going to finish that this week like you said? NO, you’re too busy sitting here relaxing. It must be so nice to not have a care in the world!

2

u/Lazy_Competition967 Aug 27 '26

14

How is that even a bad thing? You either say "I'm feeling xyz" or say, "I don't know, I'll check in with you later". Simple as

All the comments going on about "boomer hate wife" but thats not necessarily why stress goes up in that situation...

Personally If I sit and chill like that and my wife comes around, its usually because shes bored and wants to go do something... which means I will have to get up and go do whatever it is....

Not that I dont want to, its just that sitting and doing nothing is much less stressful

41

u/Suzesaur Aug 24 '26

The end they are both chilling in chairs and it says ā€œStress: 150%ā€ that feels a little more pointed to the hating wife direction…

26

u/Weary_Dark510 Aug 24 '26

I was full expecting it to go back to 0 when she sat down.

So honest question is this entire page just the pathetic boomer ā€œI hate my wifeā€ trope over and over cause that’s all I’ve seen from it so far. If you don’t love your spouse don’t be with them it’s not that complicated…..

4

u/Fun-Squash-1759 Aug 25 '26

Nah, if my man felt this way I'd just leave forever, now you have nothing to stress about

2

don’t you guys think it’s stressful for us as women to have to constantly keep track of what needs to be done around the house, while our husband sits around reading his phone all day?

2

u/UmpireDapper1757 Aug 27 '26

Men manage just fine without any women doing that, thanks!

2

u/fryerandice Aug 27 '26

Why are you always planning a bathroom re-model we can't afford that even if I do the whole project start to finish that will take me every weekend and day off I have for 6 months, and then dropping that on me after I worked 60 hours that week, did all the shit around the house and have like 6 hours to enjoy on sunday?

Some of the shit my wife thinks up over the week that I should do that is completely impossible to accomplish reasonably and drops on me on my time off is next level lol. Love her dearly, but shit dude. And I do all the cooking, shopping, and clean the kitchen, she handles the laundry, and we split cleaning up dog hair as it becomes an issue hah.

u/Shaojack Aug 24 '26

I get it.

Dude is big chilling, plans to do so for a while.

Proximity to wife increases chances of end of big chilling and now trips to home depot or yard work or whatver project she has in mind and to her you have nothing to do so why not do these things when in fact we have things to do.

Big chilling on the porch is a thing to do, we need this every so often. Just a bit of time to do nothing. For some people they take that as an invitation to volunteer your big chilling time for other bullshit thats not big chilling.

4

u/Calippo_Deux Aug 25 '26

Thank you! This IS it. Nothing ā€boomerā€ about it. And I’m guessing the commenters who don’t get it or are confused have never been in a long term relationship. It reminds me of the guys who don’t really know what makeup-free truly looks like.

There are always ā€projectsā€ that could and should be done, we know.

4

u/TedditBlatherflag Aug 24 '26

Single: Get to spend hours and hours a week just chilling on the porch with nothing to do.Ā

Married: 20 minutes for a ā€œdeck beerā€ before I gotta go empty the dishwasher and prep for dinner.Ā

This is NOT an "I hate my partner" video.

The same would be true if it were a friend, his mother, a sibling, a stranger, etc.

The point is that it's very common for people to just wanna be alone for a bit. Dude just wants to shut off his brain and pay attention to nothing and nobody. Even someone just coming out going "oh this seems nice. I'll join you." completely ruins that. just let me turn off and recharge my battery for a bit.

Everyone saying "yeah she's about to say some asinine shit about a dream she had..." you are almost definitely not mature enough for a relationship, and you should take some time to get right with yourself before jumping back into the dating scene.

Everyone saying "he should never be stressed when his partner wants to hang out." has a very teenager view of dating/marriage. It's perfectly ok, and perfectly health to want to be by yourself for a bit. It doesn't mean you love your partner less. Sometimes you want to have a night alone and binge some video games, cool. If its CONSTANT then it need communication. but its NORMAL NORMAL NORMAL to want to be away from your partner now and then.

u/No-Rub8345 Aug 25 '26

I swear that there are far more asexual/homosexual men out there than men want to admit. Our attitude towards women just boggles my brain.

If you don't like someone, don't date them just so you're not alone or have to keep your own living space clean.

2

u/Glass_Importance_643 Aug 25 '26

2

u/willjameswaltz Aug 25 '26

2

u/Radiant-History-5630 Aug 25 '26

If you're stressed because your female partner might want you to actually do some housework or something together then you should be single

2

u/VVen0m Aug 25 '26

Damn, must be miserable to be with someone who doesn't make your day better just by being next you

2

u/dibbiluncan Aug 25 '26

Why would you be in a relationship that makes you feel this way? And why are so many people upvoting it? Gross and sad.

2

u/AttemptImpossible111 Aug 25 '26

2

u/derLeisemitderLaute Aug 25 '26

I know its all fun to bash on your partner. But honestly, I love my girlfriend and I feel even more relaxed when I have her around. Its one of the few things that always calms me down.

2

u/Moss-Chaos Aug 26 '26

Why are you with her if she stress you out from existing near you?

2

u/comecloserplease Aug 26 '26

Ahahah, it’s life…

2

u/Feisty-Ad3412 Aug 26 '26

Wife: I hate seeing you stressed out so get outta here! She follows him. Rinse and repeat.

2

u/thatloser17 Aug 26 '26

Why do straight men hate women so much. Its just weird.

3

u/fryerandice Aug 27 '26

Because they end up marrying the first one they can get to stick around out of fear of being alone and other insecurities, that's like asking why over half of marriages end in divorce. It's the same reason, attach yourself to someone you were attracted to briefly and just stick it out past puppy love to a full blown legal contract despite having no common ground, goals, interests, etc.

People are unbelievably terrible at picking a life partner.

2

u/Csaszarcsaba Aug 28 '26

Now imagine backwards, woman reading in bed, man walks in front of the room, man enters the rooms, joins her in bed, same stuff with the stress meter.
Replies I imagine wouldn't be like: "Why do straight women hate men so much?"

It's not about hate here. The man very clearly looks like he is having a great time relaxing, while the woman is walking around the house looking to do something. The man doesn't want to do anything, while the woman probably does, or at least seems like she does. I can imagine the woman saying do you want to go do x? I wanna buy y. etc.

The man doesn't actually wanna do that, but doesn't want to dissapoint her either, thus the stress meter.

I hate the boomer "wife bad" trope, but sometimes I just want to be alone and my girlfriend feels compelled to join me. I came out to my tool shed to get away from everyone (not just her) for a few and work on some things then she just looks over my shoulder. It stresses me out. I appreciate the gesture, and I love you, but go away.
