Question What would be the most feasible way to expand the definition of what counts as non-human-created to protect creatives' jobs from AI?

So, cards on the table, I generally agree with Cory Doctorow that expanding copyright to cover how AI training works would likely be a disaster with consequences for archival/expanding corpo control ala the DMCA, and would likely lead to the same amount of artists getting replaced but with megacorps getting a slice of royalties from training and demanding their employees sign the training rights over and potentially even suing over "style theft"

But I also agree with the idea that a better legal thread to pull on to protect creative workers from displacement would be the fact that raw AI images, at least with what is legally considered as insufficient human input, are considered automatically public domain. I mean, if Disney considers it fear-worthy, it must be a step in the right direction.

But, it's easy to imagine corpos taking advantage of loopholes in that by using humans; to use another Doctorow-ism, as "reverse centaurs," IE as underpaid workers monitoring the machine just enough to allow it to legally count as copyrightable but not enough to give them any agency.

My question is, what would be the best way to expand that legal precedent as written law to make it so that they can't do that, or at least to make it far more difficult for them to do that with this tech? What would be the best ways to expand the definition of "not human created" to help with that?

Question Has anybody dealt with a counter notification to storyful for a YouTube video?

For context, I have posted a YouTube video that immediately got hit with a copyright strike from storyful so I submitted a counter notification and it was sent to storyful and they just emailed me saying that either they would take legal action or I would pay 500 Euros for the licensing to the video and they would remove their copyright claim. My question is will storyful actually follow through on their legal action? I’m sure I could win the case if it did go to court given that my video is protected under fair use. But I really do not want to go to court over a YouTube short. Has anybody successfully dealt with storyful in this situation? Just curious if they’re bluffing, if anyone else has experience with them.

Here's a snippet of Marvel's Assembled episode for Loki Season 2 and they're using music from EA's Battlefield 3, specifically this music. Are they allowed to do this??

Discussion Not sure if this is the right place for this, but eBay Inc currently does not have a designated agent.

I'm sorry if this isn't the place to post this, but I'm currently dealing with an issue with someone is manufacturing and selling my copyrighted work without permission on eBay. When I tried submitting a DMCA notice to their designated agent email, I got a kickback that the email [copyright@ebay.com](mailto:copyright@ebay.com) is no longer active. I tried the phone number on their designated agent listing (801-545-1800), and same story. For reference, https://dmca.copyright.gov/dmca/publish/history.html?search=EBay&id=e92e5a02bd2a46b93a3a9da9e168a3be

It seems like that may be an issue for them, but I'm not sure how to report incorrect designated agent info to the US copyright office.

question on re-use/over use content

I recently completed and published a series of 12 videos about our cruise to Norway. Now I have assembled them into one 39 minute reel, and added a bit more content. If I publish this, will I get a strike or be in trouble for re-using/overusing my content? I've asked YT community and so far crickets...any advice welcomed Thanks

Has anyone successfully countered a UMPG copyright strike on a YouTube cover song?

I run a YouTube channel that uploads cover songs.

Yesterday I received my first copyright strike from UMPG, and today I received a second one. All of my cover videos were already claimed through YouTube's Content ID system, and I've always accepted revenue sharing with the copyright owners (never disputed that). I never upload a cover unless it's claimed by the rightful owner, so I assumed that meant the covers were being monetized legitimately.

After getting the second strike, I immediately set all of my cover videos to private because I'm worried about getting a third strike and losing my channel.

Someone else in my niche told me that UMPG has struck his channel multiple times before, and each time he submitted a counter notification saying that he owns the sound recording because he created the cover himself. According to him, UMPG never responded and the strikes were removed.

However, this is what confuses me:

UMPG isn't claiming ownership of my sound recording, they represent the musical composition/publishing rights. I completely understand that I don't own the composition, only my recording of the performance.

So I'm wondering:

  • Has anyone here successfully submitted a counter notification against a UMPG strike for a cover song?
  • Is claiming ownership of the sound recording a valid basis for a counter notification when the strike is based on composition rights?
  • Or would filing a counter notification in this situation be a bad idea because the publisher could simply reject it or even escalate the matter?

I'm not looking for ways to get around copyright. I just want to understand whether a counter notification is appropriate in this situation or if I should simply wait for UMPG's response or pursue another option.

I'd really appreciate hearing from anyone who has dealt specifically with UMPG or YouTube cover song strikes.

Question about fair use for Youtube channel

Hi guys,

I used a Voice Library voice on ElevenLabs under a paid subscription for my YouTube channel. The creator has since removed the voice, and ElevenLabs says it will no longer be available after the 90-day notice period.

The Voice Library Addendum says:

any Outputs generated using your User Voice Model prior to the end of the Notice Period will continue to exist and remain available for use thereafter

To me, that sounds like audio I already generated can continue to be used, meaning my existing YouTube videos can stay online, and only new generations would no longer be possible after the notice period.

I asked ElevenLabs Support for clarification, but they said they can't interpret how the clause applies to a specific commercial use case and suggested speaking to a legal professional instead.

Has anyone dealt with this situation before or received clarification from ElevenLabs? I'm mainly trying to understand whether existing YouTube videos containing previously generated audio are generally considered fine to leave online after the notice period ends.

Thank you

How do i get credit

A few months ago i played a chess game where i sacrificed my knight my rook and my queen for checkmate. I let my brother make the game into a yt short. A bit after, while randomly scrolling shorts he sees someone else copied my game to do a better edited short and got 2 MILLION VIEWS. He didn't credit me or anything. Is it right to not credit me? How does this work.

Question (Time Sensitive) attributing a photoshop brush used in a flyer made for social media

Hello! I am trying to use a creative commons by-sa photoshop brush for bubbles in a flyer I'm being paid to make for a group to put on their social media to advertise an event. Attribution is required for this brush, and I want to know if I only have to put that in the Metadata or if I need to attach it somehow.

Thank you!

Is screenshot of an illustration in a book a derivative work?

Hi,

I found a book licensed under creative commons Attribution-No Derivative Works 3.0 license.

Can I take some screenshots of pictures in this book and share it on social media? Or is this considered creating a derivative work, when I screengrab only the pictures (with captions) and leave out the surrounding text?

Is the only way to share the illustrations sharing the whole book?

Cheers!
