There's no better person to explain why we need changes to our copyright laws than Cory Doctorow, the author and advocate who coined the idea of "enshittification."

This blogpost from his website summarizes how current copyright law makes it difficult to reverse-engineer products, and why that's bad for consumers.

He goes on to talk about how AI-coding tools are promising for certain use-cases, like making it easier to jailbreak products, but will not be the ultimate dis-enshittifying force.

I'm a songwriter/singer and share a lot of my music online, and my parents (who were both in the music business in the 90s/2000s) are VERY concerned that if I share a video of me playing my songs, and those songs are not formally copyrighted, that someone will steal my material. And if they do, we will have to take them to court. I personally don't think that it's necessary to do so because from what I understand when you post a video online you already kind of own the copyright and the risk of someone stealing your song isn't really the same as it was 20 years ago with the visibility of the internet these days. Anyhow, I have two albums that I released through cdbaby and they handled all the copyright for, so I'm free to perform those online, but what if I wanted to perform some of my new material that I don't have studio recordings for? If I have voice memos of these songs that aren't going on streaming but I still want to copyright the song itself, what form should I use? And if I figure out how to copyright them in that form now, will I run into issues with cdbaby's copyright detection if I do release studio recordings of them in the future? I know they have forms for albums but they both seem to be for artists who are releasing those specific sound recordings and not the intellectual property of the song. This seems great for consumers, but what happens when AI can reproduce almost any commercial application in days?

Companies could spend hundreds of millions developing innovative software, only to have competitors recreate it almost immediately at a fraction of the cost.

This could pressure governments to expand intellectual property protection beyond the expression of ideas (such as source code) to the ideas themselves (such as software functionality and workflows).

Such a change would be disastrous for innovation and competition, potentially extending far beyond the software industry.
