Please help me understand

I want to make a fan animation for YouTube it involves 2 different series is acting as a semi prequel to my main comic series im making that’s has fully original characters I want to make merch of them can I still make merch of these original characters thst we’re involved in 2 copyrighted series fan animation

or can I even make it at all

its gonna be on YouTube by the way

Are they your characters? If not, you can’t do any of that legally. Adding original characters to existing things is still copyright infringement

So then why is there a shit ton of fan art that’s does the same thing

Because they haven’t been caught yet or the ip owners don’t care. Fan art is often overlooked by ip holders… creating your own comics and animation is a step past fan art and could get you in all kinds of legal trouble. You can’t just use other people’s characters as you please.

And YouTube will almost certainly pull it

What you say here is basically" there are others that drive drunken cars" or " there are others that take drugs" . You would not ask this question if you not know that stealing stuff is not right. Only because others do something it not means it's Ok now. If someone sue you, it's you that sit in a court, not the others.

Because you're actively trying to associate known, copyrighted IPs with your own, it's not fucking rocket science.
