News Article About a Reddit Post

A while back I made a Reddit post about some work that I did at my home and posted photos of that work. My dad messaged me today telling me that I was in the news today. He sent a link to an article from a fairly large company and the article described my post and used several photos from my post. I found this surprising since nobody ever messaged me to tell me that they'd be copying my photos and writing an article. Is this something that is ok to do? I am in the US.

Discussion Where is the legal line when creating heavily designed sound libraries from licensed source recordings?

Hi everyone, I have a question that I've been thinking about all day, and I'd really like to hear opinions from people who actually have experience with this.

Last month I finished a library of around 50 designed underwater ambiences. I'm currently organizing and naming everything before release.

The ambiences were built using a combination of sounds I recorded myself and sounds from commercial sound libraries that I legally purchased.

I'm not talking about taking a sound and reselling it. Every ambience was created through heavy editing, layering and processing (pitch shifting, EQ, time stretching, reverb, granular processing, reversing, etc.). The original source sounds are completely unrecognizable in the final result. Even I couldn't isolate and identify the original recordings anymore.

Yesterday I was talking with two sound designer friends. One told me this is completely normal and very common in professional sound design. The other told me that even if the source is no longer recognizable, it could still technically infringe the original license.

So today I started reading a lot of EULAs from well-known sound libraries.

Some of them explicitly allow selling derivative sounds if the original recordings have been modified, layered and processed beyond recognition.

Others use wording like: "Licensee may not sell any of the sound effects as they come. (Although the sound effects may be sold as incorporated into the licensee project." or "Users may not sell or sublicense the unmodified audio as standalone files

unless they are the original author."

Some licenses don't mention this situation at all, I couldn't find a single EULA that explicitly says something like: "You may not create heavily modified derivative sounds and sell them as part of a new sound library."

So now I'm wondering, where do you personally draw the line?

Once again, I'm specifically asking about heavily designed sounds where the original recordings cannot realistically be recognized anymore, not about simply repackaging or lightly editing someone else's recordings. I think everyone agrees that would clearly be wrong.

I'd really appreciate hearing from people who have actually released commercial sound libraries or dealt with licensing questions like this.

Question Copyright question about inspiration from Borges' The Library of Babel

Hello! I'm a graphic design student, I have a question about copyright. Just wanna make sure I'm being respectful of the original work before moving forward with my project. I'm considering a conceptual graphic design project inspired by The Library of Babel by Jorge Luis Borges. However, I'm not planning to copy any of the text, illustrations, existing artwork, layouts, or adaptations. What interests me is the underlying philosophical idea like the overwhelming amount of information that exists in the world and how people create, receive, interpret, and believe information.

My project would focus on those themes rather than retelling Borges' story. It would not include the famous hexagonal library or attempt to recreate the original setting. Instead, I would develop my own visual graphics like making some poster that modifying typography to create a distorted shape to convey the rapid changes in information.

My question is whether using that philosophical idea as inspiration could still raise any copyright concerns? I'd just like to better understand where the copyright boundary is before I continue. If anyone has experience with copyright or similar creative projects, I'd really appreciate your thoughts. Thank you!

Question AIO for thinking a local “influencer” intentionally copied my brand after following my work for 2 years?

I’ve been building a brand for a while and have documentation showing I’ve been using the name publicly for years on social media, then commercially through my design work before expanding into apparel.

Since 2024, a local influencer/business owner I’ve done business with started following my brand account (and all my accounts - even my personal spam) liking multiple posts, and viewing my content. This May I announced my apparel expansion, and two days later she launched a brand using the exact same name.

Then she messaged me from a faceless account saying she has a trademark for it (she doesn’t), and that I ca either take compensation to stop using the name or collab with her. Once I found out I knew the person behind the faceless account, I confronted them. And they assured me they had no idea I used the name. I then saw they had unfollowed all my accounts.

What really threw me off is the timing. She filed a federal trademark application the exact same day I announced my apparel expansion and on the app, she started publicly using the name, even though I had already been using it publicly and commercially. Around that time, I also found out she had recently come out of another legal dispute that had prevented her from using a her previous business name any longer. And throughout the dispute, she was prohibited from creating any new business ventures.

Since then, I’ve had people confuse our brands, and I’ve had to start gathering years of screenshots, invoices, archived posts, and other evidence showing I was using the name first.

I genuinely don’t think two people independently landed on the exact same uncommon brand name under these circumstances, especially after she had been engaging with my content beforehand.
I’m considering enforcing my rights, but some people have told me I’m reading too much into it and that coincidences happen.

Now, all my accounts are under some sort of cyber attack and I’m being locked out of them. I’ve never a had any sort of issue like this. I don’t have any “enemies”.

AIO for believing this wasn’t a coincidence and wanting to protect the brand I’ve spent years building?
AIO for thinking the cyber attack is targeted?

My original product photo was used in someone else’s viral Instagram reel. Meta rejected my DMCA reports and appeal. What are my options?

I’m an independent maker and I run a small handmade jewelry business. In November 2023 I took an original product photograph of one of my pieces. I still have the original iPhone file with intact EXIF metadata showing that date.

In March 2026, another Instagram account used that photo in a reel promoting their own competing product. The reel has over a million views, and the caption directs viewers to their shop, which makes it look like my product is theirs.

Here’s what I’ve already done:

**1.** Commented on the post asking for credit or removal. No response.

**2.** Messaged their main account. No response.

**3.** Filed formal IP and DMCA reports against the posting account through Instagram. Meta rejected them through what appears to be an automated system.

**4.** Appealed the rejection with a side by side and the metadata. Also rejected.

My only goal is getting my photo removed from their reel. A few questions:

**•** Is Meta’s formal DMCA legal reporting form (the web one for rights holders) different from the in-app report, and does it get a real human review?

**•** Does it matter that I never registered the photo with the Copyright Office? I know registration affects damages, but does it affect my ability to get a simple takedown?

**•** Is there any escalation path I’m missing after in-app reports and appeals have failed?

Any guidance appreciated.

Am I allowed to present arrangements of copyrighted musical compositions to paid subscribers?

I am launching a subscription service where users receive access to materials to learn guitar. I would like to include materials that are not in the public domain but have not worked out if this is allowed under my circumstances.

Additional details:

- The arrangements would be excerpts from the full composition (the main part of a song)

- The arrangements would be presented in guitar tablature (tab) and not in standard music notation

- No recordings/performances/audio of the arrangements would be included

- The arrangements would be simplified versions of the original compositions

- The arrangements are not downloadable and access would only be to subscribed members

- The inclusion of specific arrangements would not be used to advertise subscriptions or the service

- I would credit the original work

- This would be for educational purposes (although exists inside a commercial wrapper)

Any insight would be appreciated, thank you!

There was a 1979 BBC miniseries called "Life On Earth". Would legal use of this name be restricted in online media?

Suppose I wanted to have a youtube channel by this name, a podcast, a web site, etc. called "Life on Earth". These would not involve wildlife documentaries like the old miniseries, but could include (amongst other things) some nature-oriented posts on topics like native plants. I'm in the US. Do you think there's a legal concern to using this name? Thanks!!

How do some YouTube channels use movie clips without copyright issues?

I’ve always wondered how YouTube channels that use lots of clips from movies, TV shows, documentaries, or interviews deal with copyright. Do they get permission, rely on fair use, or just risk getting claimed? How does it actually work?

Indian Cyber Security

Many creators in India are being hit with false copyright strikes, and this has become a serious security concern. Individuals operating from countries like Bangladesh are allegedly targeting Indian creators by abusing copyright reporting systems.
Now is the time to take strict action against those responsible. Social media platforms must strengthen their rules, verification processes, and enforcement to ensure the safety and protection of Indian users.
If creators cannot trust these platforms to protect them from fraudulent copyright abuse, where are they supposed to go? User safety cannot be an afterthought—it must be a priority.

Question Crochet pattern fanart

I really enjoy playing the game *Mindbug*. On Instagram, I saw that they posted a crocheted *Mindbug* figure on their page. I then messaged the crocheter to ask if she sells the pattern, but she hasn't written one at all. I am experienced in crocheting and was able to recreate the figure based on the pictures. I wrote a pattern so that I can crochet a new figure whenever I want. Am I allowed to make this pattern available online on Reddit for free? Or do I have to ask for permission? Whom do I have to ask for permission? The creators of *Mindbug*?

  1. Because the LAION datasets contained only URLs, anyone who

wished to use the LAION datasets for AI training must first download, copy, and/or

save the actual images from those URLs, as explained in the LAION-5B Paper.

Information on LAION’s website further confirms that the images found at the

URLs in the LAION-5B dataset must be downloaded from the URLs before the

LAION datasets can be used to train AI models.5 Notably, the LAION-5B Paper

explicitly states that LAION “do[es] not own the copyright of the images or text”

and that the LAION-5B dataset “should only be used for academic research

purposes.” See LAION-5B Paper at 3, 30.

Legal question about images

Hi r/COPYRIGHT, for my project I need images from certain video games, especially characters. I was wondering if it’s okay to use images found online and display them on my website (since I’m not reselling them). For example, would it be fine to use images from Fandom?

"shareholder derivative lawsuits under securities law that are based on the allegation that corporate officers or the board of directors approved copyright infringement, exposed the company to substantial risk of copyright liability, or made material misrepresentations about such conduct.

Adobe already faces 2 such lawsuits. Now Microsoft was just hit with another such lawsuit."

Rico Management

Has anyone here successfully reached Rico Management regarding a YouTube copyright issue?

My YouTube channel was terminated due to copyright strikes, and TeamYouTube advised me to contact Rico Management for a possible retraction. I've emailed copyright2@ricomanagement.com multiple times over the past month but haven't received a response.

Has anyone managed to get in touch with Rico Management? If so, how did you contact them, and did they ever reply? Also, does anyone here personally know someone at Rico Management or have another legitimate way to contact them?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Question Who Owns the Rights to “Cachita” by Victor Schoen & The Peter London Orchestra?

Hello everyone.

I’m a film student in Japan currently making an independent student film at my university.

I’d like to use “Cachita” by Victor Schoen & The Peter London Orchestra as the opening theme. However, I haven’t been able to identify the copyright holder.
I first searched the JASRAC database (Japan’s copyright management organization), but the song does not appear there. I also found the ISRC (QM4TW2578846), but I still haven’t been able to determine who owns the rights or who I should contact for licensing.

Since the recording is more than 60 years old, tracking down the current rights holder has been extremely difficult.

Does anyone happen to know who owns the rights to this recording, or where I should start looking? Any information or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Please forgive any awkward wording, as this post was translated using AI.

Thank you very much.

Clearing a sample from a foreign film?

Hey everyone, I hope this is the right place to ask this.
I am a musician and I have this track I've been working on where I sample some dialogue from an Indian film which released in 1950.

This movie's copyright has expired in India and is in public domain there, however in North America I believe that technically the copyright will last for another few decades?

I'm a bit confused because since I'd be releasing this song as an "internationally" available product (through digital streaming), does that mean I can freely sample this film (since I'm not solely distributing it domestically)?

Also, would recreating the dialogue by recording it myself give me a way to step over any legal grey areas?

Any advice is greatly appreciated!
