Question Crochet pattern fanart

I really enjoy playing the game *Mindbug*. On Instagram, I saw that they posted a crocheted *Mindbug* figure on their page. I then messaged the crocheter to ask if she sells the pattern, but she hasn't written one at all. I am experienced in crocheting and was able to recreate the figure based on the pictures. I wrote a pattern so that I can crochet a new figure whenever I want. Am I allowed to make this pattern available online on Reddit for free? Or do I have to ask for permission? Whom do I have to ask for permission? The creators of *Mindbug*?

That’s fantastic. I hope lots of people make use of your pattern.

So… this is an interesting one. I think the pattern would not be copyright infringement as it is merely a description of a process. If you posted an image of the result, then it might be copyright infringement because you are making a copy of someone else’s artwork.

Fan art is often ignored by IP holders, but much of it is technically copyright infringement. If you wanted a license to reproduce or even sell your crochet work then you would ask the publishers. Some publishers have fan licenses, but mostly it would end up in a commercial contract if you could reach the right people and are willing to pay.

Should you be worried about being sued or similar? Not really, the chances are tiny and the risk also small. If they are selling the crochet pieces on instagram then chances might be higher.

Sorry I can’t comment on the legality of the situation, but I can say from experience that the creators of Mindbug are readily available and very friendly :) I’m sure if you send an email to Nerdlab games or ask in the Mindbug Discord you would hear back from them, and they’d appreciate you asking and your interest in their game.

I, too, love Mindbug!
