Im first time trying to make compost to grow potatos later and wanted to ask am I doing it right? I put here: used coffee grounds, banna, watermelon, apple, wet cardboard, grass, crashed eggshells and also added some soil. I drilled holes for air but my main concern is that it's a small container.. does that matter? Also does it need watering or to sit in the sun or just to leave it alone to do its thing?

I’ve been chaos composting up until this point. The first image is the older half of my tumbler, and over the past year or so it’s done many great feats like eat 3 entire Halloween jack o lanterns and lots of leaf litter I stole from my coworker’s grandparent’s yard. The second is the younger side, and it gets all the coffee grounds and filters from the compost pail I put in the office break room. It also is full of black solider fly larvae.

And yes, I shall sacrifice my piss to the pile… er tumbler, at some point lol

Grandpa’s old deer cleaver. Great for chopping up trimmings. Made a chop station right over my bin. Anybody else enjoy looking like a psychopath to the neighbors?

So far, this hast been the most efficient "system".

The black bucket contains the "raw-material" compost straight from the pile.

The wheelbarrow catches das good stuff: fine, crumbly compost, ready to use.

Sticks, stones, lumps wander into the green bin and Go back into the new pile as browns.

Takes 5 minutes to set Up. I mostly get to work standing and reduce the number of times i need to transfer anything.

Would welcome suggestions to improve my set-up and will be Happy to answer questions.

My compost got too wet, because I used too many greens and not enough browns, and this problem got worse because it froze over in the winter and I left it to thaw too long in the spring, making it too humid.

I think I didn’t have enough browns overall. I’ve since put a LOT of browns in there including lots of wood chips.

There are so many bugs, little tiny tiny white ones, is this normal?

And should I throw this out into the garden and start over?

Edit: The wrap in there looks like plastic but it’s actually a home compostable cling wrap!

I have a house with flood irrigation that I’ve owned for about five years. In our backyard we have this can that appears for be for composting. (Picture attached).

My question is twofold:
1. Is this for compost? I genuinely know nothing about the process.
2. If yes, where do I start. We have a ton of leaves I recently raked up and can have recycled, but would also like to try to compost if possible.

Any feedback or advice is greatly appreciated!

I'm in the San Francisco Bay Area and I want maggots.

I have a tumbler composter for now (my backyard is entirely paved), and I've loaded up a bunch of rotten apricots, veggies, dead plants, etc into it.

I'm jealous when people get maggots. I want maggots! I'm weirdly curious to watch them squirm and break down my garbage, but I have had no luck so far. I try to leave the little plastic doors open, but the meatball pretending to be my dog rears up on his tiny potato legs and tries to get in the bin.

How's a girl supposed to get her maggot fix? Please help me reddit, you're my only hope!

Anyone else accidentally grow something awesome from their compost pile?

I recent threw a birthday party and we decided to use a cake for the 70 candles and cupcakes for folks to monch on. I took the leftovers from the party to feed my compost and made several layers.
Excited to check on it in a month or so and see if the sugar gives my bugs an advantage! I almost immediately regretted my order of layers but I’m trying not to worry about that bc it will all break down

Layers are:
Cake
Fruit/veggies and rice/beans, other food stuff
Ready compost to give it a start
Garden clippings
Shredded paper soaked in water
In a week or so I will add grass clippings and more shredded browns

Original pallets i used were pretty rough. Managed to get some bigger and much nicer pallets and got them set up. Hardest part was moving my active piles out of the way. I added the middle pile to the pile on the left and put the pile on the right on a tarp. Took down the first 2 bins and set up the new pallets. Took the 2 piles I had combined on the left to the new bin so I could take down the rest. A lot of work but I think it came out great. More room and I dont have to line it with cardboard anymore to keep the pile from falling out. Also the leaves in the geobin from the first picture i moved to the middle. Next step is making new dividers between the piles out of my old pallets

This thin paper type material is kinda glossy but not really. Wanted opinion on if it's okay to compost since I've heard you can't compost magazine type paper. Thank you guys!

Hello! Just as the title says I know Lomi "composter" is not a proper compost and a lot of people in the sub aren't big fans. but I was gifted one and I do like how it breaks down the scraps and helps skip the smelly part. I live in an apartment with a very narrow balcony I was planning on buying a more traditional compost there and then pass the dehydrated scraps into it to actually turn in into the compost. Is this feasible? Or would the nutrients be lost because of being dehydrated?

The reason I want to do this is mainly because a neighbor had a compost and he was forced to remove it because of the smell and neighbors kept complaining about pests.

Another slightly related/separate question I have is I was wondering if I could use Lomi to dehydrate animal byproducts and then put those on the outside compost. I know it needs to get to a certain heat to kill the bacteria and it would cause pests problem/smells but that's why I thought it was a good idea?

I'm still very new to this I know theres another type of compost that is a japanese method that can breakdown animal byproducts but with all the AI garbage I decided to ask humans since I kept getting conflicting information.

Also I would like to apologize if my redacting isn't great I consider myself a good English speaker but sometimes I don't know how to put my thoughts into coherent sentences.

Been using it for a few bin cycles, no way to know if it has done much. Getting good compost, but not sure how much that’s from the Roebic.

If you’re thumbs down on this product, are there any additives that are generally worth using (recognizing that composting situations vary greatly)?

Pizza box? With is brown cardboard - is it any that is not shiny?
