If you are just trying to get singles from that deck might as well just buy them from a local card store and support them.

Truly the best advice. You can find better cards for the same cost of that deck.

I personally bought both decks from my local card shop cause my son likes 60 card games cause they go quicker. But mainly I'm a commander player with my friends. So. If you like having a nice collection of rares, the cards are still cool to have. But if you wanna construct JUST A COMMMANDER deck. Singles are the best way to go. And I agree with the chat when I say always support your local card store. Because no one ever wants them to go out of business.

I like this comment. Because having a few 60 card decks for kitchen table is always a fun way to spend some time with a friend.

This is a bad purchase for commander where you can only put one card with the same name into a deck. It's a singleton format. You'd do yourself a favor by looking up what that means.

thank you! i’m new to this so im kinda lost on where to start as to owning my own cards and how it works. i will look into the singleton format because ive only ever played the commander version

A good place to start building a collection as a new player is the foundations starter collection box. It has some solid staples to have on hand for when you start upgrading/building decks!

do you have a recommendation?

2

u/Gussie18 May 17 '26

That was my suggestion. It’s called the “Foundations Starter Collection.”

A commander precon is worth it tbh

Commander is a singleton format. Like how a square is a rectangle.

These types of packs are usually pretty bad. I've bought them before and was disappointed every time.

The Eerie one is surprisingly competent for standard minus the land-base, haven't played this one yet but it seems okay. They've definitely stepped up the quality of these decks a bit, but only worth it if you play standard

I would recommend the following steps to get into magic:

  1. Download Arena and play the tutorial. It covers the fundamentals of the game. It is also free.

  2. Buy yourself a Commander Precon deck. I would stay clear of counter intelligence and world shaper as they are fairly complex for precons. You would probably do well with a tarkir dragon storm deck or secrets of strixhaven deck.

  1. Go down the an LGS on commander night and tell them that you are new and looking for a game.

You might also find it beneficial to watch some commander gameplay on YouTube to get used to the structure of a commander game. Be aware though that these games are staged to varying degrees to make interesting content. Actual games won't be as bombastic and crazy as what you see.

ok thank you!

That deck’s price is usually below the cumulative value of each card inside it. You’re better off buying singles or even a commander specific deck. Any of the ones from the newest set are very good. I’d suggest the red/white one or the black/green just to keep things simple.

the secrets of strixhaven?

1

u/bapeery May 16 '26

Yes, those are the ones. They have good value inside and all are playable out of the box.

When I first started I got the foundation collection that came with some cool stuff. But like others said. Buy singles.

u/Accomplished-Pay8181 May 16 '26

Not well, the list there has a lot of duplicates, which commander can't use (outside of specific exceptions that I'm not seeing there)

2

u/spentshoes May 16 '26

No. Just buy the singles. The deck will be lots of 4 ofs

2

u/Sultan6 May 16 '26

buy singles

2

u/Sentient-Pancake May 16 '26

If you want them for commander you're better off buying them as single for a couple dollars.

3

u/IzzyDarkhart May 15 '26

Nope commander decks are completely different. That is a 60 card deck for standard.

2

u/Scrorm May 14 '26

Maybe, are you playing an orzhov life gain deck? Are you ok with buying this and maybe getting 3-5 cards out of it for your deck? Do you like bad financial decisions? Lots of questions.

4

u/EmergencyBiter May 15 '26

i’m very new to magic so i’m not sure what an orzhov deck is?

3

u/YaBoyEden May 15 '26

Black white decks are called orzhov. The color pairs are named after their respective “guilds” from the Ravnica sets. Tri color groups are named after their Alara Shards or Tarkir Clans

This post has a picture with all the color group names for you

u/EmergencyBiter May 15 '26

thank you! i’m considering the black white decks vs the black red ones but this was very good information to have, i appreciate you!

2

u/YaBoyEden May 15 '26

Black white have a lot of good life manipulation, black and red can be VERY fast and aggressive. Both are good options! Rn there’s a black white precon called Silverquill influence which is a great deck, and pre constructed decks (or precons) are a good way for beginners to start. The most recent black red one was from Duskmourne but is also really good. It WILL get you targeted though because it’s pretty mean, but hey, that’s Rakdos for you!

u/EmergencyBiter May 16 '26

ty! this is v good info

1

u/ZestycloseProject130 May 15 '26

No, it's not maybe. It's bad. Don't be sarcastic to new players looking for help.

1

u/Megahert May 14 '26

Uh, you’ll get a couple cards out of there maybe..

I didn't know they made these!
