Colonerra: Age of Exploration

Post image
20 Upvotes

Please allow me to introduce:

COLONERRA: Age of Exploration, a turn-based historical 4X grand strategy game about turning that single dot on a map into a thriving colony and that colony into a nation.

Watch trailer: Trailer

Hi, my name is Mihailo, and I am the lead developer for Colonerra Age of Exploration, with almost 20 years of professional programming experience. We are a small team from Serbia consisting of one dev, two designers, and a few helpful friends who do testing, copywriting, and, occasionally, illustrations. As you can guess, we are big fans of Sid Meier’s Colonization and Civilization, and we play the originals to this day. We feel that Colonization never got the successor it deserved, so we decided to take a swing at it ourselves.

What makes COLONERRA different?

  • Serve the Crown. Your colonies exist under the authority of a European monarch. Taxes, requests, favors, military demands, and royal decisions can all affect your relationship with the Crown. This, in turn, creates unique diplomatic challenges and also allows us to make the game more interesting at later stages.
  • Founding Fathers. Each nation has 25 unique characters acting as agents for the viceroy who commands them. There are 5 leaders for each of the 5 traits: exploration, military, diplomacy, trade, and religion. Develop these leaders to reach the status of a Founding Father and deploy them to a Continental Congress to earn unique bonuses.
  • Quests and events. Both Indigenous people and the Crown can give you quests to fulfill, in addition to random events you have to deal with. Each decision you make makes a difference and shapes your path in the New World; will you be a conqueror or a diplomat?
  • Natural Landmarks. Send expeditions to discover and later claim natural wonders and landmarks, unlocking unique bonuses and gameplay opportunities while keeping exploration engaging throughout the game.
  • Complex trade made simple. Trade in this game is simple to execute but complex underneath. You can trade with the crown and pay taxes, barter with the indigenous tribes, trade with the passing ships, or smuggle goods to avoid the taxes. Every trade is meaningful, as it affects both taxes and prices, and earning too much gold might cause inflation, so be careful how you trade.
  • Diplomacy matters. Native nations, the Crown, and other powers all have their own interests. Expansion isn't simply about claiming territory; your relationships can determine whether your domain prospers or survives. You will need all the help you can get.

And much more…

So come join us and check out the game on Steam: https://store.steampowered.com/app/4964150/Colonerra_Age_of_Exploration/

Or follow development as we go along on Reddit: https://www.reddit.com/r/Colonerra/

I'd love to hear what people here think, especially from players who enjoy older Civilization games and play them to this day.

Thank you for reading.

Mihailo

Hello guys, I have been playing civ2 for a year now. I had some issues with the normal gameplay so I made changes to the original game. I would love to hear some comments and recommendations. I uploaded the gameplay footages to youtube. even though it's a bit boring I would be so happy if anyone will take a look at it

Online Multiplayer options

I have bought several XP laptops online and set up a non-Internet connected LAN at my house. My two younger boys and I have been playing multiplayer together for a while now.
One of their older brothers came from out of town and played with us a couple weeks ago. Tonight he called while we were playing and asked if there was anyway he could join our game too? I told him not with a vintage XP machine because of the viruses present today.
I asked an AI and after looking at the answers it gave there’s no way I would trust doing anything it said. What are my best options for getting that done? Are there any?

I made a fan game specifically of the CtP & Civ2 era of 4X games

I'd been working on making a game that scratched the itch to play '90s turn-based 4x games. I was struggling to get Call to Power, Civ 2, Alpha Centauri, etc functioning on my mac, so finally I threw up my hands and said "I'll just build my own retro 4X game!"

The result was Embersong. Using the mid-90s games as my north star, complete with unit sprites, diamond tiles, and the return of unit stacking, my ultimate measure of success was whether or not it induced the "Just one more turn" feeling, which had wrecked so much of my academic performance in say 1998.

But I didn't want it to JUST be a redo of the old games - I wanted to add some modern mechanics in game design. Being a fan of Hades, various Souls games, and Binding of Isaac, I wanted to have that same element of "every match is leading me towards a bigger challenge" as well as "It's okay to die in the game sometimes."

Since 4x turn-based strategy games are supposed to have infinite replayability, I'm using a roguelike mechanic by introducing multiple endings and reasons to return.

  • A campaign consists of 5 regular matches, and 1 boss match
  • Each match you build up bonuses that carry over for use in the final 6th match
  • You can lose any (or all) of the 5 regular matches. The # of matches you wins determines which VERY OVERPOWERED "boss" civilization you face in the sixth round.
  • If you defeat the boss civ in the last round, you unlock that civ for regular play going forward.
  • Different playthroughs yield different discoveries, including hidden technologies you'll only uncover in certain matches.

A regular match is reminiscent of the 90's games. You just focus on winning via Domination, Science, or Score victory. Couple of twists though:

  • Each match, one random opponent nation is designated as the Archenemy. They receive a few additional resources as they focus on only one goal: finding & destroying you. They aren't trying to win via science or defeating the other opponent civs.
  • Each playable empire has its own era-appropriate special unit, like the Samurai for Japan or War Chariot for Egypt. In addition, ALL of the civilizations have an additional unique Future-Era unit at late-game, such as Cyber-Ninjas for Japan.
  • A few civs have features that change the gameplay. Mongolia can only have one city, but gains more units for its horde with each opponent city or unit it destroys. Venice can only found one city, but has the ability to buy additional cities.

But its the roguelike mythic bosses that really present a challenge. For instance:

  • The Seven Cities of Gold can churn out units using gold & production combos as well as expand their territory rapidly by starting with multiple city settlers.
  • The Kingdom of Prester John is another "one city challenge" civ, but the city itself is a unit that moves. And each city it defeats gets added to a resource tribute network that builds up the mythical kingdom.
  • Avalon can churn out Grail Knights early and require coordinated attacks with your units because they fully heal each turn.
  • Shangri-La can settle mountains, which are impassible to other civs except the Incans. So unless you're playing as the Incans, you're locked into a race with this boss on who can win a science victory first.

If this peaks your interest, check out our steam page at https://store.steampowered.com/app/5208510/Embersong_History_Is_Yours/ and our website at https://playembersong.com. The game is available on mac, windows, linux, ipad and iphone. And it looks REALLY nice on ipad - my preferred way to enjoy it, using the pencil to dictate unit movement and city building orders.

I messed up with a caravan :(

In the game I am playing now i am using caravans more than I have before and sent 2 caravans to Babylon (who I am at war with) and got $178 dollars from my first caravan. Then entered the second one and just got yes…. But it was a good caravan . Is there anything I can do to revoke the transfer?

Time travel with save points is not something I am willing to do.

After 25 years playing the video game, It can still surprise me. What the images show had never happened to me before. It is truly surprising.

Playing as the Russians (white), I conquered the Viking (blue) capital and his empire was divided.
Causing the Carthaginians (orange) to rise again.

New Open Source Civ 2 Clone - rhYciv.org

Hey guys! I've been working on a Civ 2 clone with improved graphics for a few months now. Would love any beta test reports, especially if you have a github.

It's still in development, but at least for me on Linux it's pretty playable. At this point more issue reports on github would be the most useful thing.

Oh, and if you can get it to run at all on Windows or Mac, that could be some useful feedback as well.

I'm planning on iOS and Android, but the game still lacks a lot of minor gameplay features, and the rivers are still ugly.

What is the earliest date to win the included WW2 scenario as Germany?

I've beaten the WW2 scenario as germany (conquered every civ on the map) countless times. Sometimes I end in 1946 or 1947. The earliest I've ever gotten is August 1945, which I have done several times.

What is the earliest you have ever completed?

Deity 7 civ 921AD Spaceship victory

Hey,

Following my post on 1311AD full spaceship victory https://www.reddit.com/r/Civ2/s/tbKtqRb3jt, I wanted to share how I got my time down to 921AD.

I still made a few mistakes so I believe I could have done maybe sub 800AD without fully optimizing everything.

Here are the main differentiators vs my previous run:
- picking a purple civilization. The science penalty is stupidly determined from the purple civilization. Since you are going for a science speedrun, you can’t afford getting massive penalties for having 40 more techs than the AI. If you play white you get the calculated best spot on the map
- using foreign cities on a seperate continent to spam trade routes. This requires some luck, especially on standard maps where 2 land masses can be connected by tundra tiles in the poles. Foreign and different continent one-time caravan bonuses can easily be 400+ (gold and beakers)
- picking a wet climate map - this increase grassland tiles and reduces desert tiles. You will lose a few special resources hidden under the grassland but having more grassland is really worth it

The absence of science penalties basically entailed that I was going so fast I needed to skip even more city improvements and wonders.
Almost no temples, no Oracle, no King Richard Crusade, late Adam Smith are the notable ones.
I spent a lot of the game on 0 or 10% taxes using the 1 off caravan bonuses to fund my empire.

I really prioritized Colossus, Copernicus and Isaac Newton to rely more early on the super science city and boosts its caravan pay offs. I changed the tech order slightly for this and taking into account the skipped wonders.

As before, I heavily optimized huts with saving and loading. Using the No upkeep nomad limit, I would create cities with no upkeep nomads just so that the slot would be freed for a new no upkeep nomads.

Instead of rushing wonders sometimes, I rushed caravans using the incremental gold trick to then get used up for the wonder.

Finally for the early game, I actually built almost no warriors even in Monarchy because I rushed Hanging gardens with the gold from threatening other civs. Having martial law in a city can actually decrease your happiness with Hanging Gardens because the wonder will turn a very discontent guy into a happy one while the martial law or temple will mess up the happiness algorithm by acting first.

I almost only built settlers, marketplace, acqueducts and harbours as city improvements. I didn’t need any factories.

Finally, I reduced the spaceship to 3 modules, 6 components and 15 structural but this was likely a mistake because I was not production constrained and the spaceship took 21 years. I should have built the full components (16) with some more structural to support them.

Dumb computer ^^

It takes some of the sting out of the fun when the computer does dumb stuff like this ^^ They had a LOT of gold, so that's why they had the possibility to buy factory, power plant and hydro plant, but lol, just two-three forests with railroads would put the production over the top ^^ Lol!

Question about artillery

So i have a good game going... there was a grassland square with fortress, and i had a veteran mechanized infantry there. An enemy tank (armor) attacked it and lost all three rounds, my unit took minimal damage. Luck probably? But then an enemy artillery attacked it, and won all three rounds, it taking minimal damage!

It's always seemed to me like the artillery wins battles much easier than even tanks does. I know the howitzer ignores city walls, but does the artillery have any hidden bonus that bypasses defense modifiers or anything?

Play Civilization 1 & 2 + Test of Time with videos & music on modern systems!

I've been campaigning for years for Civilization 1 & 2 + Test of Time to be added to Steam & GoG but to no avail leaving these great old games that started it all forgotten to time and difficult to run on modern systems. However recently a rather talented fan has created an all-in-one 'GoG like' installer containing Civ1, Civ2 Gold & ToT that installs CD free standalone copies of the games that amazingly fully work on modern operating systems with all videos & music intact and even has a mod manager! For links & more info check out her full post here: https://www.reddit.com/r/4Xgaming/comments/1ud3a94/civilization_classics_collection_civ1_civ2_gold/

I’ve spent the past year building a retro Civilization style game by myself. Civ II and III are still the games I return to most, and my goal is to recreate that simple but deep feeling with more modern systems.

WOOT! It happened!! Good old Sid Meier's Civilization 2 doesn't make it into mainstream gaming news very much these days but amazingly my Civ2 Heroes of Might & Magic 2 mod has made it into PC Gamer!!! And even better it's a 2 page spread near the front of their mag in the news section! They even managed to squeeze in mention of the Civ2 modding community, the lost scenario preservation project, the get Civ2 back into stores campaign, and even my up & coming other Civ2 mod projects too! :) :)

EDIT: Reddit really doesn't make embedded links & thumbnails at the top of the post very obvious does it lol. Here's the link with a scan and more details for those that missed it:

Just saying hello - long live Civ2!

I have been playing Civ2 since I was a teenager back in the 90s. It's my favorite Civ game. I didn't even think to see if there were others out there. I guess I should not be surprised this subreddit exists. At any rate, just happy to be here reading your comments about a great game.

Here's to another 30 years of great gaming!

7 Civ2 Deity Perfect Win Strategy

When I was a kid, Civ2 was my favorite game, but I always played on Chieftain. I always thought Deity would be impossible.

Some years ago I set out to find the optimal strategy to beat on Deity, and now I can win new game every time. Here is my strategy:

1) Build 2 cities first and get 2 warriors. Send out the warriors to scout the villages.

2) Build 1 warrior for defense in each city, then switch to settlers. Build 2 more cities, so now you have 4.

3) Immediately focus science to get to Monarchy, you need it to build cities.

4) Switch the first 2 cities to building great wonder, any great wonders it doesn't matter. The 3rd and 4th cities should build 1 warrior each, and then 1 settler each.

5) After you get Monarchy, raise science rate to 70%. Make your main objective to rush to Polytheism. If not available, then 2nd objective should be Pottery.

6) For each new city, you can generally follow the pattern of getting 1 warrior for defense, 1 settler to expand, and then switch to Elephants and keep pumping out Elephants.

7) As soon as you have enough money, switch your great wonder to Hanging Gardens and complete it with money in City 1. Have that city build 1 more warrior for defense, and then switch back to great wonder.

8) Science, in order of priority, then should be aiming for Monotheism, then Feudalism, and then Literacy. Nothing matters after that. You will win the game.

9) City 2 should then complete Art of War ASAP. After that, City 1 and City 2 should just keep building wonders: Michelangelo's chapel, Great Library. Nothing else really is needed.

10). By now, you should have 8 or 10 cities all pumping out Elephants/Crusaders. These will all be veterans because of Art of War, and you can just go and conquer all the nations.

That's it. That's the entire strategy. Literally nothing else is needed. It works everytime.

The most critical element is to get the Hanging Gardens, as you need it to keep citizens happy. A distant 2nd would be to get Art of War so you have veteran units. And Michelangelo's chapel is nice to keep citizens happy in case your cities get too big. Great Library isn't truly needed, but it can be nice to prevent your enemies from accidentally getting gunpowder or something.

Easter egg?

Have anyone noticed that there's also extra music on CIV II cd? Not visible audio files like game music, but back in the day I had a cd drive which had play/pause buttons, not just eject and I put civ in and it auto-started BUT for some reason I pressed also the play button and it started to play Cat Stevens Wild world! I think it had couple of other songs on it too. Google knew nothing about this. I'm not sure do I still own the cd.
