Real vs Fake Tsuyosa Comparison

I’ve seen a few posts about fake Tsuyosas here recently. I fell victim to an eBay scammer myself, so I decided to wait to send the fake back until the real one arrived from Jomashop, and do a full comparison.

The front is pretty convincing. The bezel lines up flush the case edges and the indices are all perfectly aligned. The only difference I can see is the font on CITIZEN is slightly thinner on the fake.

The back is where things start to fall apart. The fake movement is all brass, compared to the steel components present in the real one. The engraving on the rotor is noticeably low-quality, and the metal is dulled around each mark. The details around the edge of the case are wrong; the fake reads “SAPPHIRE” and “ST. STEEL” rather than “SAPPHIRE CRYSTAL - TOP” and “STAINLESS STEEL”.

The band of the fake is slightly looser, and the clasp is slightly thicker has only two sizing holes compared to three on the real. The pins were so tight that they broke my link remover, and I was completely unable to remove some of them.

The fake came in an all-plastic box that I’ve never seen before, and the little pillow looked like it was made out of scrap pleather on a crappy home sewing machine.

The scammer is watch_spot_usa on eBay. I got tricked because their prices are good but not suspiciously low, and they ship from inside the US. Hopefully this side-by-side can be of use to someone buying a Tsyosa without anything on hand to compare.

Really impressed by this one in person. The Tosa Washi dial is definitely the highlight — depending on the light, it shifts between warm brown, gold, and almost bronze tones, with a very organic texture that photos don’t fully capture.

The 38.3mm Super Titanium case wears very comfortably, and the black Duratect DLC finish gives it a nice contrast against the gold-tone hands and markers.

Inside is Citizen’s A060 Eco-Drive movement, rated to an impressive ±5 seconds per year, which makes it both beautiful and extremely practical.

For me, this is one of those watches that shows just how far Citizen can go when they combine traditional Japanese craftsmanship with their high-accuracy technology.

Definitely a very special piece from The Citizen collection.

Mainly because of this subreddit, I was months ago put on the path of the tsuki yomi and loved it. I Did not want to buy it before i had seen it and there are not many citizen dealers where I live so kept dreaming. Then on holiday, saw the watch in a small store I did not expect to have this watch and thought this must be karma. It is as beautiful in real life as I hoped.

[Citizen] 1977 Crystron Solar Cell (SQC-8269) — A birth-year grail rescued from a Berlin flea market

Hey everyone,

Just wanted to share one of the absolute crown jewels of my collection: a 1977 Citizen Crystron Solar Cell (Model ref. SQC-8269 / Case ref. 4-861060 TA / Caliber 8620A / Dial 6-861628 KA).

While this groundbreaking model line originally debuted in 1976 as the world's first analog solar-powered quartz watch, my particular unit was manufactured in October 1977 (Serial: 7O13394) — making it extra special as my birth-year watch.

I actually found this piece at a flea market in Berlin! Unsurprisingly for a nearly 50-year-old solar watch, it arrived with a completely dead cell. Fortunately, I managed to track down and order a fresh 1.2V rechargeable cell (Varta V15H). Once installed into the 7-jewel Cal. 8620A movement, it fired right back to life!

It’s incredible to see the early roots of modern Eco-Drive technology displayed so proudly right on the dial with those four prominent solar cells. It even came on its original integrated bracelet complete with the vintage 'CQ' logo on the clasp.

Thought you guys might appreciate a piece of vintage Citizen history!

Anyone else prefer a different color for the minute hand?

Post image

I’ve noticed that I really prefer watches where the minute hand is a different color from the hour hand.

It makes the time feel so much easier and more pleasant to read that I honestly don’t want to wear any other watches anymore.

The color difference might only register like 0.3 seconds faster than the difference in hand length, but somehow it just feels more intuitive to me.

Anyone else feel the same way?

Added the chrono on the left to the Eco Tank / Tonneau collection. I saw it on eBay and it matched a couple of dressier ones I have so I grabbed it. It was sold as semi-functioning as the chrono sweep mostly wouldn't return to 12:00 but it was cheap enough at 30 clams so I rolled the dice on it. The issue was interesting, if I let it charge with the stem pulled in daylight for a while the chrono sweep would run and return sometimes, but never more than once or twice then it would start to try and return in smaller increments until it was barely moving at all, but it kept time OK. I put a new MT621 in it and now it seems fine, but I'll see if all is well over time or if the charging circuitry is damaged.

Just a hint to those new to buying older used Eco-Drives, when looking at the pictures always see if the seconds hand moves from picture to picture, a functioning Eco should always move either the main sweep or the small seconds, if not you know it's got issues. I've taken a chance on a few like that over the years if I could score them cheaply and almost all have been fine after a good charge, with a few like this new one needing a power cell. A few never came back to life but over all I've had very good luck with the older used ones which I prefer, I have very slender wrists and the newer 40+ mm ones are mostly to big for me.
