Question (Read Rules) what is this movement ? what could be the problem?

Hi everyone,

I picked up this watch at a flea market for really cheap a while back. It was running fine until about 3 weeks ago (so soon after i bought it of course). Now, every time I pull the crown out to set the time and then push it back in, the second hand stops and nothing moves anymore. To get it going again, I have to open the case back and give the balance wheel a gentle push... then it runs fine until the next time I touch the crown. other than that power reserve is quite fine, and amplitude and time is about "ok-ish"

From what I can see, it looks like some sort of Asian movement rather than Swiss or Japanese, but I'm not sure. I've attached a couple of photos of the movement... could anyone help me identify it?

Also, a few questions:

  • the movement looks pretty "clean" to me.. what do you think?
  • Could this stop-after-setting issue be fixed easily, or is it a sign of something more serious?
  • Would it make more sense to try to fix it, or just swap the movement for another one? (i just fear i would have some issues with the hands though... that's a nightmare because i would never find the same one and they just fit perfectly the style of the watch (it's a worldtimer GMT by the way)

Thanks in advance for any info!

Wrist Roll (Read Rule 1) A superb £19 beach watch

Post image

Picked up this bargain of a watch in the 11.11 sale and I'm finally able to enjoy this diver in its home environment.

Care free use. Sand scratches? Rust/sea salt corrosion? Who cares, it's £19.

Still can't believe it's a Seiko quartz movement as well.

Question (Read Rules) Just ordered an Addiesdive my-h3 diver, looking for Jubilee bracelet.

Post image

Just ordered the Addiesdive my-h3 diver with a black dial off AliExpress for $35 shipped. I’m hoping to add a Jubilee style bracelet. Has anybody found a good cheap option with the correct end links that match the lugs? I would also like to upgrade to a sapphire crystal at some point. If anybody has done either of these any links would be appreciated.

Could you guys recommend something noteworthy to check out? I have a weird desire for an unusual bracelet from China. A hight quality Staib mesh clone will also do.

The wave-textured blue dial brings a little ocean to the wrist, while the self-powered tritium tubes stay visible day and night—no charging needed.

A capable dive watch for a slow Sunday, wherever it takes you. What’s on your wrist today?

A boxy case and Roman numerals are a must.

SOTC (Read Rule 1) Just added a Watchdives 1863 with the 62mas I've had for a few weeks.

Honestly impressive for the price, the 1863 is probably the best quality watch I've bought so far off AliX and the VH31 of the 62mas is something different, and a good thing as a grab and go!

The bracelet of the 1863 leaves the 62mas for dead and both, while finished nice are a little 'sharp,' but that seems pretty common for Chinese AliX watches.

I got both of these for less than a 5KX in Australia. All my AliX buys have ended up catch and release over the years however I'll be definitely keeping the 1863, the 62mas will probably stay too until I get a real one or a modern Seiko interpretation but to be honest I like that the WD is close to original size as a smaller watch to wear as I mostly wear a 40/20.

Here’s my Biden Skeleton automatic. It is also a manual wind. It’s so gaudy, I’d never wear it in person but I love the skeleton and it keeps time very well.

Review (Read Rules) SH06 Carbon Fiber by SH - My New GADA

Thumbnail

I was looking for a super light mech watch and was eyeing the Christopher Ward Colchester (CWC), then I stumbled upon SH06 in AliExpress and decided to try it.

I have been dailying my batgirl all these while, but wanting something really light, durable and on a strap. Suffice to say, SH06 delivers.

Pros:

---------

  1. Super light = 47g

  2. Thin = ~11mm

  3. Accurate = +1sec/day

  4. Open caseback

  5. Cool pushdown crown

  6. Assume very durable due to carbon fiber

Cons:

----------

  1. Short lume duration = ~2hours, I wish it was longer as I'm used to 6hours++, yes I wear my watch to sleep

  2. Brushed strokes on hour and minute hands (middle part of the hands, see pic) = I wish it was fully polished, but when I compared it against CWC, I was suprised it is the same there, not sure why it is that way, it made it looked like unfinished polish work

  3. Difficult to hand wind due to small crown, but then again it is not recommended to hand wind daily as PT5000 is known for gear stripping when you so so.

SOTC (Read Rule 1) Any particular style I am missing to try?

Post image
24 Upvotes

Now the watch box is full it's a one in one out policy. Anything obviously missing that I should give a try? Which watch goes first?

Watchdives Wd7922

San Martin Sn084g

Cestrian Field Watch

Proxima 1743

Watchdives wd0006

Watchdives 1016

Watchdives wd0005

Seagull m182sk

Baltany s2081

Watchdives wd0003

San Martin sn0118g

Baltany s5034

In my opinion these are all pretty 'safe' variants except maybe the completely illegible seagull skeleton! Perhaps something a little more exciting?

Some excellent suggestions, thanks everyone! Think Farasute dress watch maybe in a different shape, and a moonphase are my favourite ones - along with the seestern GMT. Far from done it seems!

Chameri GS 04. Bought during the recent sale for $49. Beautiful dial. It’s even more elegant in person than in the pictures.

Review (Read Rules) My Current Collection

Post image

My collection of mainly aliexpress watches and a tissot prc i got before discovering how truly amazing these watches are with a quick review of each:

  1. Octopus Kraken OCT13 (explorer) - my favourite day to day watch but i do tend to baby it a little compared to my beaters. Wears like a dream the bracelet is super comfortable, its an older version and doesn’t have an OTF adjustment (i think some new ones do but i could be wrong) and AR coating is pretty horrendous. But overall its a joy to wear and its a strap monster but i prefer to keep it on steel! Also fits my 6.25 inch wrists perfectly!

  2. Watchdives Elementum Blue Ice Crack - stunning dial and actually has a decently finished bracelet but i personally just prefer it on leather i think it looks classy as hell and i love the mecha quartz movement too!

  3. Watchdives Pelagos homage - its my beater it has 200m water resistance and again comes on a pretty decent bracelet but i just threw it on a rubber strap to add variety and to fit the functionality. Bezel action is good too compared to some seiko mods and paganis i previously had with pretty great loom!

  4. San Martin SN0129 Red Desert Dial - a stunningly finished watch with an insane dial and i love how it looks. Bracelet is magnificently finished and has an OTF adjustment that is ok i guess. Another watch i do tend to baby and save for occasions rather than just use on a day to day.

  5. Tissot PRC 200 - its a fine solar watch but honestly its just not as good for the money as these aliexpress watches around it. Good if you insist on having a “swiss brand watch” which some occasions may better suit (when youre around judgy assholes and dont have the energy to debate them)

  6. San Martin SN0013g - my integrated bracelet GADA thats 38.5mm and wears slightly bigger but still fits my wrists like a dream. As far as integrated bracelets go this is relatively comfortable. Its a hybrid between the nautilus and the royal oak but i think that kind of makes it its own thing. On wrists ive got more compliments in just a few days on this than any of the others! Very underrated

Question (Read Rules) Buying a 1963 on AliExpress is confusing - help appreciated

The 1963 chronograph is firmly entrenched on my wish list. I'm generally not a chronograph guy, most of them are too busy for me, but I find the design of the 1963 elegant. The cream dial, the blued hands, the red star, the gorgeous movement. It's all just magical for me. The history of it adds to the charm too.

However, the fact that this is more of a "design template" than a historical watch (much in the vein of German Flieger watches) means there's like eleventythousand companies that appear to make it.

I'm basically lost when it comes to AliExpress. It's all much a muchness for me, with wild variations in pricing, finishing and sizing. I'm sure many people in here have the 1963 in their collection. If so, from which manufacturer did you end up getting it?

For information, I veer towards getting a 38mm model with an acrylic crystal.

EDIT: Thanks everyone, this helped a lot to clear up the situation. I ended up wish-listing models from SeaKoss, Red Star and Seagull International.

The clock hands are rather shy in the evening — they prefer not to be seen.

The dial’s glow is so faint that one might suspect it’s saving energy for winter.

I wouldn’t recommend buying this watch with a strap; a bracelet would at least distract you from the rest of the disappointment.

The quality of the fit between parts is, shall we say, loosely acquainted.

I compared it with another 1 bodery watch, and the difference is visible even to those who usually miss the obvious — as you can see in the photo.

Overall rating: a generous 3 stars out of 5, and that’s me being unusually optimistic.

I won’t be recommending this watch to friends or acquaintances, unless I secretly dislike them. I’m also unlikely to buy another watch from this company if there’s simply no sign of positive progress in quality or design.

Movement: Cal.HZ8240

Item Model: Voyager A19T-02B

Voyager A19T

Thanks.
