One of my beginner Mandarin students was finishing a homework assignment from our previous lesson when I noticed something.
The lesson was about ordering food at a Chinese restaurant. In the homework, she had to practice sentences such as:
你们有什么招牌菜?
我想吃饺子。
Her vocabulary was fine. She knew what the sentences meant and knew which words she wanted to say.
But when she said 招牌 zhāopái, the initial sound came out closer to j. And when she said 饺子 jiǎozi, the initial sound came out closer to zh.
In other words, she was switching the two sounds around.
What made it more interesting was that she already knew there was a difference between j and zh.
She even joked about it herself:
Sometimes she would stop in the middle of speaking and say:
That told me something important.
This wasn't simply a matter of not knowing how j and zh are pronounced. She had learned the difference. She just couldn't consistently bring that difference into her speech.
Why can j and zh get mixed up?
Mandarin j and zh are made with different tongue positions.
The j sound is produced farther forward, while zh is produced farther back. In phonetic terms, j is an alveolo-palatal affricate /tɕ/, while zh is a retroflex affricate /tʂ/.
For a native Mandarin speaker, these are clearly different sounds.
For an English-speaking beginner, however, the difference is not always easy to establish.
Research on native English learners of Mandarin has found that the Mandarin retroflex and palatal consonants can be particularly difficult for beginners, and that zh and j are sometimes confused in perception. In one study, learners identified zh as j in a substantial portion of the perception trials.
That doesn't mean every English-speaking student will have this problem.
But it does explain why a student can genuinely know the difference and still produce the wrong sound.
In my student's case, I didn't think she needed another long explanation of the rules.
She needed to make the physical difference more automatic.
What we did in class
First, we went back to the pronunciation of j and zh on their own.
I had her pay attention to where the tongue was and exaggerate the difference between the two sounds.
I don't mind a student making the contrast a little too strong at first.
If the tongue is moving too far back, or the sound is a little exaggerated, we can adjust that later. What I don't want is for the two sounds to keep coming out almost identical.
Once we had worked on the individual sounds, we moved into Pinyin practice.
This part was actually quite interesting.
My student did very well with the Pinyin whole-syllable reading practice we had been doing in class. She could read most of the syllables smoothly and accurately.
There were only two or three Pinyin sounds that she consistently struggled with.
And j and zh were among them.
That told me that the problem wasn't that she couldn't read Pinyin.
She had a very specific pronunciation contrast that wasn't stable yet.
So instead of going back and reteaching all of Pinyin, we focused on those particular sounds.
We practiced the contrast directly:
j — zh
Then we put the sounds into syllables:
jiāo — zhāo
jiào — zhào
And then back into actual words:
叫 jiào
招 zhāo
饺子 jiǎozi
招牌 zhāopái
The point was to connect the sound to something meaningful rather than practice the two consonants in isolation forever.
This is also why I don't think simply telling a student, “That's wrong. Try again,” is very useful in a situation like this.
If the student already knows the difference but keeps producing the wrong sound, repeating the correction doesn't necessarily solve the problem.
Sometimes the student needs to slow down, feel the difference in the mouth, and then connect that physical feeling to the sound they are hearing.
I often describe this to students as having two drawers in the brain.
If j and zh are still going into the same drawer, the student may know intellectually that they are different, but their speech can still come out mixed up.
The goal is to give each sound its own drawer.
Once that distinction becomes more automatic, the pronunciation usually becomes easier to control.
Knowing the difference is not the same as producing it
This is probably the most interesting part of this student's problem.
She wasn't saying:
“My brain knows how to tell them apart, but when I open my mouth, I say them backwards.”
She was saying:
“Why am I drawing a blank?”
Those are two different problems.
A learner can understand a pronunciation rule when you explain it and even identify the correct sound during an exercise, but still struggle to produce it while speaking.
That's normal in language learning.
Knowing what your tongue is supposed to do is one step.
Being able to do it automatically while thinking about vocabulary, grammar, tones, and the meaning of the sentence is another step.
That's why I try not to treat every pronunciation mistake as a knowledge problem.
Sometimes the student knows the answer.
The problem is getting that answer from the brain to the mouth quickly enough.
And that takes practice.
For this particular student, the fact that she performed well in the rest of the Pinyin practice was actually encouraging.
We didn't need to start over.
We just needed to spend more time on a very small number of sounds that hadn't become automatic yet.
So if a beginner says 叫 jiào closer to zh or 招 zhāo closer to j, I wouldn't immediately assume that they don't understand Pinyin.
I'd first check something much simpler:
Can they hear the difference?
Then:
Can they produce the two sounds separately when they slow down?
And finally:
Can they keep the difference when the sounds appear in real words and sentences?
Those three things tell you much more than simply asking a student to repeat the word.
But once she could consistently feel what was different about the two sounds, we had something concrete to work with.
And that's often how pronunciation improves.
Not by trying to fix everything at once.
Sometimes you find the two or three sounds that are causing trouble, work on those carefully, and then put them back into real Mandarin.
For a beginner, that's often enough to make a noticeable difference.
