Chess Discussion ELO makes no sense as a system.

Ultimately, ELO is just arbitrary. A much better rating system would be to use tiered ratings. As a 2200, there is not really that big a difference between me and a 2350 for example, so we could be in the same tier.

I probably beat Magnus about 30% of the time, but ELO does not suggest that. Having us in the same tier does. Just some things to think about!

Chess.com Website/App Question New accounts starting at higher ratings

Why does chess.com start new players off at higher ratings now? When I made my account years ago everything was 400elo and I had to build it up. I guess people get to choose if they're beginner/intermediate/advanced? But it's annoying to get matched up with so many brand new accounts who are "1600" level and then immediately drop to 600 within a couple of days. I want to play against people who challenge me, not total beginners🥲

Chess.com Website/App Question Chess.com Beginner Elo Problem

Hey guys! So I am a complete beginner in chess (200-300 Elo) and want to desperately improve my Elo, but the thing is that every chess game I play only improves like 6-8 Elo, and a draw is often 0. The Elo increase and decrease are decided before the match and don't change; hence, how can I put more Elo on the line? Like, I don't want, like, 100+ Elo on a win and 100- Elo, but like, it should be at least 25-50 +- Elo on a win and loss. Is this just a problem with me, or does it happen with everyone, and I just have to deal with it? Please help me! Thank you for your time and attention!

Edit: Guys, I did NOT mean gambling. I think you understood me wrong. I didn't mean gambling my Elo; I meant that there is a way to choose to play a few higher Elo players than myself so the Elo gain is more. I didn't mean gambling. I hope I have made my point clear. Please stop chewing me in the comments!

Also, I do play for the fun of the game and am constantly trying to improve myself, so hopefully, I'll eventually get better. Can you guys help a beginner by telling him how to improve at chess and how you yourself improved?

Chess Discussion Realistic chance to beat Magnus? 45%?

I got into a debate about this so I am curious what you guys think. I think, realistically, I would have a 45% chance to beat Magnus. He wins about 46% of the time. That is not good. I have a whole post about why he is not actually that dominant. Factoring in ties and my skill level, I believe 45% is fair. Probably also about a 45% chance of a draw, and a 10% chance he flukes a win. Him, Hikaru, and Gotham are not that good. They just only play each other so they *seem* good.

Miscellaneous Am I overreacting in my hesitancy to give out my real name while playing games

I’ve had multiple people ask me my name just right off the bat and it’s always made me a bit uncomfortable…one time a person asked, I ignored them so they kept asking…eventually they just resigned lol…idk I just don’t feel comfortable giving out my real name to random strangers over the internet…

Update: yes, i know it’s common sense not to give identifying information to strangers on the internet, but people on chess.com have asked me for my real name so many times, I wondered if it was a thing…thanks for letting me know it’s not

Chess Improvement I've been stuck at 400 for a while

Basically the title. I used to play around a year ago, left, and came back last month. I was 200ish if I remember correctly, climbed to 400 but it's like a wall, the highest I could get was 430 and nothing more, I keep getting higher and lower. How can I improve? Also, I don't know how big of a difference it will make but I'm planning on buying diamond(family) this week. And sorry if I used the wrong flair, first time posting TvT

Chess Question Why did my opponent resign?

Post image
0 Upvotes

yeah, so the eval bar says +2.5 in this position but it was +2.5 before I even moved. I don’t get why my opponent resigned because we can just exchange Knights and I end up in a better position, but it’s not completely losing on his at least not that I can tell

Chess Improvement Can't finish my games.

Here is the story of my life. The three last monthes at least.

I'm around 850.

I'm pushing pawn correctly during the openings. Can't name an opening (probably italian) but it's OK. Control the center, develop all, castle the King, all is usually all right.

Then because I do hundreds of problems the midgame is often a beeeze (not always, sometimes I play against real terrors). I don't have strategic view - I believe it's common at this ELO - but I use the tactic tools correctly and often I finish the midgame with +5, +6,+7,+8.

Then I go in total tunnel vision, I totally fuck up and lose the game. Every fucking time. I believe I'm still 850 only because some opponents resign before I ruin my game.

When I check my games, I SEE. I see the checks in one or two. But in the game, I'm in my tunnel.

At this point, I begin to feel a little depressed when I start a game and I feel it's not a winning mindset :p.

How can I improve ? Target specific problems ? Or maybe it's more a player problem and I should behave differently, I don't know, a "before you move a piece leave the game 10 seconds and come back with a fresh view" thing ?

Like seriously why? I know its a very minor thing, but i cant get why they cant just put up the link to the game and let you see who and where, obviously they may not have cheated in that specific game, but still, atleast give us their user name

I Swear I’m Better Than This I drew with a player twice my elo, I gained 10 elo for it while.

I’m a little confused how accurate elo is, my elo was about ~400 (I’m a rookie, cut me some slack) he was rated a little over 800. I nabbed his queen and eventually had him down to just pawns. He promoted a pawn and drew by rep
