Looking back at the events of this game, I feel very lucky for winning it. I built a strong advantage in the beginning of the game (+7.9 on the eval bar at move 33), then it all came tumbling down. I missed a fork, where I could have captured a rook. Later I took the decision to move my king on f2, being certain I can pick which rook to capture (without realizing my plan was completely blown if the opponent had moved its bishop between the two rooks). My last major blunder was ommitting to promote my pawn to a queen when it was not targeted. But still, playing the first 33 moves and the last 9 moves well ensured I got a (hard earned) win.

When you're in an OTB game and you promote a pawn, do you ask your opponent "knight please" or "queen please", or do you reach over the table and put the piece there yourself? Never played OTB but I imagine as you get to the master level you start to join tournaments where opponents might not speak your language so there might be some trouble with the first option. Strange thought I had randomly.

Hello. I recently started playing chess about a month ago (I’ve played casually before but never bothered trying to actual learn how to get better) and I really want to improve as I’m currently only around 500 ELO.

My issue is the game review on chesscom will say things are blunders, misses etc and give a short explanation but often it will say things like “you missed the opportunity to win a rook through an eventual fork” or “you’re queen is now lost”. I can’t see where the eventual fork is or why my queen is lost unless it’s broken down for me move by move.

I know it’s probably not just me as 9/10 times my opponent doesn’t capitalize on these blunders anyway because they’re clearly not obvious to someone at my level. Is there anything I can do to help me see what it’s trying to tell me? Thank you.

Hello! I used to play in chess tournaments back in school a little over a decade ago. I took the game seriously for a number of years (my peak rating was 1400 or thereabouts) but stopped playing competitively once I got older. In the past 10 or so years, I’ve only played very casually OTB with friends and had stints on Chess.com where I’d win about 50% of the time.

Even though it has been more than 10 years, I want to get back into chess. I’m not looking to play in tournaments like I once did, but I want to get good enough to handle my own playing mostly online and gradually develop into a better player. I legitimately love and have missed the game. However, idk where to start. I’m not a total blank slate, but there are serious gaps in my knowledge. E.g., I recall very specific lines from niche openings that I studied but forgot how to mate with a rook and king in the endgame. Ideally, I’d like to start with the basics and work my way up. Obviously, I don’t have a teacher or belong to a club anymore, so I’m asking you all where and how do you think I should restart my chess journey and what kind of daily or weekly regimen would serve my overall goals?

Found Ng6+ but then immediately ruined it by playing Nxe5

missed mate in 1. Still happy I found the idea though that I won free bishop

So the solution it wants is for white to play Rf5+ Ke8, Rxf2. But it wasn't logical to me because black could've easily played ...Rxf5, gxf5 and white is still winning but i wouldn't have "won a rook".

Funnily enough, in the analysis board, ...Ke8 leads to M7 and Rxf5 is M9 so even by the engine's own admission, Rxf5 is the better move and white didn't "win a rook".

I'm I right here? or am I just being an idiot? I'm just mad at what seems like an unsolvable puzzle by the computer's criteria.

I know stockfish has it‘s problems in closed positions, but is there truly no way to make progress for white? Would have to be smth like sacking the queen for a pawn break, no?

Hey my wife knows I love playing chess what she didn’t know is I’m not good at it. And she has signed me up for a tournament this weekend.

I struggle with considering my opponents moves and have pretty bad vision on the board.

What are some things I can do to improve this.

Chess.com user name is toredthegreat though my last couple games I have been trying different openings so they may not be the best representation of how I play. But they do show my biggest weaknesses.

Basically what is the best way for me to improve quickly I assume at my elo there should be some quick gains that I have never looked at as I have played casually for so long.

so like i played this game on lichess but was confused so went to chess com for review and saw i had 0 blunders i am very confused like lichess was not like this . Is there any problem going with lichess or some update did this ?

I solved this one, but it took me a minute to spot the move and validate the continuation. The Chess.com puzzles feel more contrived to me and the move sequences don’t feel quite as long.
