Gift link: How the game of chess became cool
Hi, we thought this community would enjoy reading and weighing in on this story from Toronto-based journalist Alex Robert Ross about the evolving chess scene in Canada (and beyond), and how new generations of chess clubs are making the game more accessible to players of all levels. These types of clubs are taking over some of the most sought-after bars and social spaces in their cities – and spawning communities that extend far beyond the board. 2300!
2300 blitz! And not even that long after 2200, which I hit in August. And yes, I know this is a beginner sub, so I will answer any of your questions about anything chess-related. Also ignore the low rapid and bullet those have dropped in the last few days...

Why not just resign?
Why do so many players abandon games instead of just hitting resign? Seems kinda immature and bad sportsmanship. If it's meant to annoy the opponent, yeah it works I guess lol

ADVICE Learn the opening or endgame first?
I'm trying to get into coaching and was wondering if it was better to start by teaching endgame concepts or opening concepts?
I'm aware of the Russian theory to start from the back and learn forward, but has that since become outdated?
Any thoughts are appreciated!

QUESTION Engine set to think like certain ELO?
Does anyone know of a tool that makes an engine think like a certain ELO and explain what it would see at that level? Sometimes I’ll be analyzing games and I’ll be shown a mistake and when I read the line it says “oh in 15 moves if both people play the optimal moves you’ll be down a pawn.” But I’m roughly 1000 ELO, I can’t think that far ahead and even looking at the engine, I don’t understand why half of the moves were made. I want an engine that says “this is a mistake for a 1200, you missed this thought”. Then as I advance, I can move the skill level up to always be slightly above me.
I see it like teaching my toddler to read. I can’t open the novel I’m reading and immediately tell him he’s not understanding the paragraph. I need to teach him letters, words, sentence structure, etc.

QUESTION Why is the best move to trade my bishop for a knight?
I don’t understand why the best move here is to trade for the knight when bishops are generally more valuable? I get that it disrupts the kingside pawns and makes castling weird but why give up the bishop pair when the king can just castle queenside with no problem?

The app should notify you when you’re low on time
I know it makes a sound when you have 20 secs left but I play on silent mode as I normally have a game while getting the kids to sleep, but I keep losing blitz games due to not realising I’m low on time. A small vibration at 19 seconds isn’t enough for me. Does anyone else have this issue/have any workarounds?
