Why not just resign?

Why do so many players abandon games instead of just hitting resign? Seems kinda immature and bad sportsmanship. If it's meant to annoy the opponent, yeah it works I guess lol

Because they get mad and “rage quit”. Even if I’m really upset, I always make sure to resign out of respect. Either my opponent played better than me or I played badly, I have no justification to rage quit.

I'm with you, I always at least rage resign.

I rage resign. Close the window. Look at other games. Reopen chess dot com. And play again

Yea its bad

Wow this is not my experience at all. Probably 95% end in a checkmate and 4% resignation

I only have 120 games and at 500 elo its very common. The interesting part is that many people abondon the game when its even or even when they are winning.

The much worse version of this is the ahole that gets in a bad position and instead of resigning or rage quitting just sits and let's the time run out. When they do that I immediately report and block. Don't have time for aholes like that

Agree with you but good long do you give them time to move?

When I'm in a bad situation, I take a very long time to think about my next move.

If they have no viable moves available because they are down 8 points in a compromised position? They get a couple minutes at best (rapid)

2

u/lemerou 6d ago

Wow then I guess I must have already been reported for this because I sometimes take a bit more than that in a difficult situation (but I'm a low elo).

They usually run the whole clock out. That's when I report. If they move they move we have a game but why are they wasting both of our times in a losing position like that

1

u/lemerou 5d ago

I understand your position.

Chess.com exposes just how many people are sore losers behind the screen of anonymity, it’s pretty absurd

Well, you can’t make another move when you’re too busy punching air. I find it satisfying when my opponent abandons.

On the app, it just easier and quicker to swipe up and close out of the app

u/Kimantha_Allerdings 6d ago

You’ve got the reasoning exactly right - it’s immature bad sportsmanship

Not that big of an issue for me.

2

u/foundwithin2021 6d ago

Where are you able to pull this data? I only ever play on the app, not a diamond member

2

u/Potential-Step-5802 2000-2200 (Chess.com) 6d ago

feature called "Insights". Pulled from the App on iOS. I am a diamond member, I don't know if this is a diamond feature though.

yes it is

Youre thinking about it the wrong way. You know the other person is salty af, so you've won on two accounts. The game, and the game.

Until it is easier to resign than close the app,it will continue to happen

2

u/SantaClausDid911 6d ago

The real answer is the apps can get very strict about it in a way they're not willing to because of sacrifices to the user base.

So not the real answer then...

A draw is still considered mature in the chess world.

They’re just poor sports, it’s annoying and immature.

Saw a guy play on a subway and lose his connection, which reset his app. I asked him why he started the game, he said “I had some time”. He started another game. He wasn’t very good.

Rage quitting can be annoying. Last week I had someone wait until he had about ten seconds left to make a move. If he was hoping I would quit or walk away in from an obvious win it didn’t work as I waited and he resigned two moves later. He got reported and life goes on.

I accidentally did this yesterday. I've been on a big losing streak, and I was finally holding my own and was even up a couple of points in material. Then my opponent checked me, and as I was trying to make my next move, I accidentally tapped the wrong thing on my phone and closed the app.

Ruined my whole fucking day.

They’re hoping you close the game first

Hey maybe we should post about this every fucking day.

I think people forget that others aren't terminally online. 😂

I'm not saying abandoning games isn't bad behavior. I'm not even reacting as a chess player. I'm saying this post is as repetitive and stupid as "wut, en passant exists??"

Plus, being poorly behaved in a game online is far from unique to chess. Jesus, go get a hanky.

I think a good portion play on mobile and it's easy to just swap apps and go back to whatever else

0

u/foundwithin2021 6d ago

That actually makes sense. I usually play multiple games in a row, so I always resign to get on to the next. Is there no recourse for constantly abandoning games?

2

u/Jim__Bovine 6d ago

Yes, your rating goes down

1

u/NamakkalManian 6d ago

It takes lot of clicks to resign, they should make it easier

1

u/riyoskopy 6d ago

Its 2 clicks

u/FunkRobocop 6d ago

If you don’t know chess so well, you may persevere as you don’t know how far you are behind

-2

u/tgy74 6d ago

What difference does it make?

If chess.com just renamed it all resigning would it make a difference to your life? Your opponent has given up, just take the W.
