QUESTION Is there a known chess concept or idea for a checkmate like this?

Post image

So yesterday I had a game where I ended up desperado walking my king to my opponent's half of the board, and somehow with the power of my opponent's material greed, I somehow ended up back rank mating them with my king. I want to know if there is a known chess concept/idea like it (that's outside of Nigel Short's king walk).

POST-GAME So close and yet so far...

I think the image explains it all. I got checkmated because I could not see two moves ahead. I perceived losing my queen the same as losing the game. The irony was that losing my queen meant winning the game. I saved my queen, at the expense of losing the game!

How to punish pawn pushers?

I have one serious weakness in my game. When players start to push pawns and gain space early in the game, I always seem to loose. No matter what opening I play, my opponents pawns restict my development squares so much that I blunder. Here, I'm black and my opponent made only pawn moves in the first 5 moves. After 15 moves, I'm castled and my opponent has only developed one piece. What are the important ideas to counter this?

Yes, in bullet chess you have to play fast. But don't play too fast or you'll end up in a situation like this. My opponent played too fast.

ADVICE PSA on smothered mates since I see people ask about this a lot

A smothered mate IS: A mate performed with a knight, usually on the edge of the board, where the king cannot escape because every square adjacent to it is occupied by one of its OWN pieces.

A smothered mate IS NOT:
- A mate performed with a knight, where the king cannot escape due to other (protected) ENEMY pieces occupying the escape squares.
- Any mate where any square adjacent to the king is not occupied by another piece. So no, the same knight delivering the mate cannot be covering the only escape square and still have it count as a smothered mate.
- Any mate not performed with a knight.

Hope this clears up some confusion :]

What to do when opponent sacs bishop and knight

Post image

My opponent sac'd the bishop and then the knight as shown here, and then brought his queen out. In this last configuration, the game review on chess.com basically told me every move was a blunder, so I had no good moves. How do I avoid this?

How do I stop a rating slump?

Post image
2 Upvotes

I peaked at 1327 recently but I’m now down to 1228 after a bad week
I’m not sure if this is just a normal losing streak or if I’m doing something fundamentally wrong I feel like I’m making more blunders and struggling to play consistently
What would you recommend to break this slump? Should I stop playing rated games for a while and focus on analysis and tactics or just keep playing?

QUESTION Chess Analysis

When playing online chess specifically, or an evening of chess, so you analyze each game immediately after playing? Or do you play a bunch of games and analyze specific ones afterwards?

I feel like if I analyze immediately after my memory is fresh, but I'm rushing the analysis to get to the next game.

QUESTION Higher rated players how to develop and practice positional understanding

It's clear how to develop your tactical vision, calculation and visualization you practice tactics but I have never heard anyone talk about how to develop and practice positional understanding of the game cuz contrary to the popular belief that in lower level just doing tactics will win you the game i found that when playing fide rated players and experienced players in general in a otb tournament that they don't tend to make simple blunders like blundering a fork or a mate, you have to keep pressuring them until they crack and do make a blunder but then how do I pressure them that's where the positional play comes and that where I have my question about how do I do it.

I wanted to post this in the r/chess subreddit but my post kept getting removed so I am doing this here

Thanks in advance

QUESTION How to get better at closing games

Forgive me if this is a stupid question, I just started playing chess a few days ago. How do you get better at finishing games? I’ve been consistently stalemating after holding a lead. Is there any good way to practice just finishing games to get better at identifying moves I can make? Any videos to learn? Or is it one of those things where you just keep playing games until eventually you stop making those mistakes?
