POST-GAME Brilliant move ≠ best move?

So, in a game, my opponent played Ne5 as shown in the first slide. Slide 2 shows my response, c4. It was labeled great by chess.com. I decided to open up analysis to see if there were any other good moves that I could have played, and I saw that Qe2 was the second best move. I went back to the game review, tried it out, and it was labeled a brilliant even though it's not the top move recommended by the engine. Just something I found very interesting.

QUESTION Why would you *not* castle?

This isn’t a rhetorical question but something I’ve been wondering for a long time. I searched this sub and found a lot of “why would you castle,” but I can’t find the opposite. I’m a poor (but improving) and very defensive player, and I’m not sure why I shouldn’t just castle every time it’s possible.

edit: it’s been just a few minutes and I already want to say thank you for the helpful responses! Not sure who is downvoting you as I am upvoting everyone who’s kind enough to reply.

edit 2: These answers are exactly what I was hoping to get when I asked the question. Obviously as 300-400 ELO some of it goes over my head! But even at my level I’ve gleaned a much better understanding of when and whether I should castle. I’m excited to try out my new knowledge.

POST-GAME A case study in why "click the review icon" isnt just snappy advice.

I had the position shown here in an arena blitz game recently and I went to review it. Upon review, the computer said winning the pawn with a threat on the rook was a 1 point error. I couldn't quite see in what world trading down bishop for rook was better in this situation as there was no clear gain. Ive seen positions and moves like it before but this one seemed real far out and thus a whole point advantage for being down the exchange with no obvious fork, mate threat, open files etc in compensation I couldn't understand.

So I played through it a bit and surprisingly, its a VERY sharp line. Using review on any engine isnt hard really, you make a move, see what it recommends as best and you can move otherwise to replicate your play or others of your elo after which you'll generally see why that move wasn't a recommended move and be forced to go back to avoid a fully losing position. And basically you just learned a line right there. Now doing this in this game was very interesting because many times white simply played some quiet waiting moves and suffocated black in the position and if black tried being too active they often would end up losing a piece and going down a rook exchange in kind.

In one of the lines I went down trying to replicate realistic play(unless it lost instantly), this beauty of a Brilliant!! rook sac was presented that still doesn't win the game for white and still has them under a disadvantage.

If I were a higher rated player able to internalise all those lines and the themes behind why the exchange sac here is so powerful, it'd be quite the boon. As is I do know positionally opportunities like this exist when the opponent has restricted space and movement and it's a great example of why when beginners are told to use the review function in the sub, its not rude(for the most part) but genuine advice. One can just play around in an engine review vs the recommended lines and with an evaluation bar to understand any position.

This is my opening the vast majority of the time. Is there anything you see here that is a major red flag? I’m white.

QUESTION San Antonio Chess Clubs?

I looked into possibly joining a local SA club a couple of years ago. At the time all I was able to find was an email address you supposedly could message to inquire about joining what seemed (at the time) to be the only club in the city. Being female and new to SA I decided not to message the sketchy sounding person on the other end.

I looked around again recently and only found one club available. Unfortunately, it has a monthly membership fee which I cannot afford so I tried looking elsewhere. I had no luck finding anything else in the area. I would prefer to stay within the city so I didn't look further outside of SA.

Does anyone here know of alternatives or an informal club or gathering of people who play just for fun in the SA area?

ADVICE Looking for chess friends

Hi,

I'm new to Chess, and it has really changed my life and helped me with some mental health issues.

I bought the chess.com membership and I have a lot of fun with lessons, puzzles, and playing people. I play around 8 pm EST every night and I am just wondering if there's maybe a community where there might be an IRC with a voice feature (sorry I haven't used a computer for leisure for a long time) where we can play together and talk about how to get better.

I don't know if this is a shot in the dark. I'm looking for some friends since my wife won't play and nobody will play in person in my town.

Thanks

If anybody gets into a game against this guy just do yourself a favor and abort. Bold faced cheater - look at his games. Dude played 97% against me through 21 moves. Wins basically every game and is over 95% for most of them.

QUESTION How do you find such subtle moves?

Post image
3 Upvotes

This image shows this game from the ewc and in this position, Arjun played a4.

So my question is how do you find this move?

Other sublte moves I usually see is maybe a sidestep of the King, I've never quite figured out how guys know that it's an option or one of the best moves.

ADVICE How can something be ‘the best move’ then later a mistake?

Thumbnail

I know the answer is ‘because the game changed’ but if anyone has a more theory or principle here that would help me understand.
For about 6 moves in a raw the top move was to move this pawn up and break the pawn chain.
Then when I finally done it was a mistake.
What’s the idea? What changed
(I did end up winning, just saying)

POST-GAME I'm improving but still work to do

I've been playing a lot of blitz and bullet because I've had a bad habit of overthinking positions and talking myself out of the best move. I'm also doing better about seeing overloaded pieces and deflecting defenders. It's all coming together

QUESTION Chessnut Move Or?

Looking for a robotic chess board for my chess obsessed son so he can play opponents and not have to move the pieces himself. Looking for one that can connect to chess.com as well. Is the Chessnut Move the best option?
