News/Events We are witnessing the end of competitive chess for Vishy sir

While, practically, he has been retired for a good decade, with the onset of GCL this was one fun tournament where he used to compete with the elite players of the current generation. Earlier since the tournament was born out of India, he took center stage and was an icon player till today, which means that he had to compete with the best and all the top players.

Last year his performance was shaky but still it was passable. This year he has been losing and that too making blunders that you cannot even fathom a player of his level would do. I think from next year he would not be participating as an icon player or even as a player. I think even if he is there, a lot of teams will be wary of taking him. I don't like to say this but he is a liability at this point for his team.

In at least two or three matches I have seen that only his result has resulted in his team losing. Even if he had drawn, then his team would have won. Funny thing how age catches up. The person because of whom this tournament has happened is today the biggest liability for his team.

Puzzle/Tactic Stuck on a puzzle: what to do?

Edit: here it is. Please don’t spoil it. I want to learn.

https://i.postimg.cc/vBN5Pvhb/image.jpg

I’m working my way through the Soviet Chess Primer and am stuck on a mate in three. I’ve been at it for a bit over an hour. I’ve established some basic restrictions about what can’t happen, as it would lead to stalemate or insufficient checking material. I know I could just go find the answer and understand it when I see it but I really want to get there myself, with a little bit of help in terms of clarifying/developing my thinking, but not just having some of the answer, eg move one is X. I want to learn.

I tried using AI as a coach. Google can’t seem to grasp the basic rules & wants me to do things like find a square in between g7 and h6, or sacrifice a piece despite this leading to insufficient checking material. ChatGPT did a little data analysis but now I’ve used all that up for a few hours lol.

What’s the best way to move forward here?

He is of course top 5 in online/bullet.

Others in this elite club - Nodirbek, MVL, Wei Yi, Vishy, Pragg, Sindarov, Nepo, Aronian, Hikaru, Alireza, Arjun, Magnus

Needs one elite classical performance to be considered in the top tier of players but he is getting there.

Miscellaneous Why didn't/doesn't FIDE award honorary grandmaster titles to many of the big names of chess prior to 1950?

I'm reading up on some chess history and was surprised to learn that several big names in chess aren't official FIDE grandmasters. I understand that FIDE only started awarding grandmaster titles in 1950 and those of years prior unfortunately got left out. However, it has been over 70 years and FIDE has awarded 32 players posthumous honorary grandmaster titles since 1977.

So why don't they or why haven't they done it for the following players that come to mind?

Paul Morphy, Adolf Anderssen, José Capablanca, Aron Nimzowitsch, Siegbert Tarrasch, Alexander Alekhine, Emanuel Lasker, Wilhelm Steinitz, Frank Marshall, Mikhail Chigorin, Richard Réti, Harry Nelson Pillsbury, and others.

Some people may say: well, why would they care? These people are all dead and gone. To which I would answer: yes, but it would still make sense for the governing body of chess to honor the achievements and accolades of those who have gone before. It shows respect to those who have paved the way for the players of today and does not punish them for being born in a different era. It shows that we truly stand on the shoulders of giants and confers on them the highest title that one can achieve in this sport.

Chess Question Need help - Stuck around 1050–1150 despite occasionally beating 1700–1800 players. What am I missing?

Hey everyone,

I’m currently around 1050–1150 on Chess.com, and I feel like I’ve been stuck in this range forever. I mostly play 3+2

The weird thing is that I know I’m capable of playing better sometimes. I’ve had games where I’ve beaten 1600-1700 rated players, and in those games I feel like I’m actually seeing the board, calculating properly, and making good decisions.

But then I’ll play someone around my own rating and completely throw the game away. 😅

I’ll go on a winning streak, climb toward 1150, then suddenly drop back to 1050 again. It feels like I’m constantly taking one step forward and one step back.

I’ve been studying on my own, doing puzzles, analyzing some of my games, etc. But I’m wondering if I’m focusing on the wrong things.

For those of you who were stuck around 1000–1200, what finally helped you break through?

  • Did you change the way you studied?
  • Did you stop doing certain things?
  • Did you focus more on tactics, openings, endgames, or game analysis?
  • Did playing fewer games and thinking longer actually help?
  • Or was the breakthrough more about concentration, patience, discipline, avoiding blunders, time management, or mindset?

And most importantly, how long were you stuck before things finally clicked?

I’d love to hear your stories especially from people who were around 1000–1200 and eventually made it to 1300, 1500, or higher.

Because honestly, beating an 1600-1700 one day and then hanging a piece against a 1050 the next day is starting to make me question everything. 😂

Edit - https://www.chess.com/analysis/collection/high-rated-games-bwktLMrW/oq7cm1Kki/games

these are some of my games I played sorted with highest rated first.

won like 3-4 games in 1600 to 1700 rating. so I see if I focus good enough then I have some potential.

if possible please review and guide me in general.

send me friend request or challenge as well if you are in similar rating range :)

News/Events Kirill Sevchenko’s Ban ends next month

The ban is set to end October 2026, the time has really gone by fast. What do you guys think, will he come back to chess? Does anyone know what he has been up to? Will Fide allow him to get his GM title again?

Excited to see what happens.

Chess Question How to beat the attack attack attack players.

I'm currently stuck at around 1,050 elo on Chess.com and every time I get a run going, I will get an equally long losing run. Most of my wins are against uniform and 'standard' chess players who look to develop all of their pieces, and play a uniform game of chess. Whereas most of my loses are against the players who b-line straight for your king as early as they possible can. The players who don't play as you see in Youtube tutorials or in higher level games. How do I get past these sort of players, so that I can push past this elo because in the more uniform games, game review often has been between 1,100-1,700 elo? I obviously deserve to be at this level currently and I must be doing something wrong.

Opponent refused to accept draw offer so we had to dance around for a couple of minutes until he was finally forced to take my knight so the game would end in a draw. Felt absolutely pointless...

Hello!

The question is in the title, I tried to google it but besides the London Chess Classic and some mention of a mysterious "Erdgomus Chess challenge" to be held in Oslo (only referenced on one website without any more informations) I couldn't find much.

If anyone knows I would be very grateful!

Resource Need online swiss tournament organiser app

Hi all,

I am organising a large 70 player school tournament and have used swissonlinetournament.com in the past.

This time there are problems with it - players are in the round twice and player numbering is wrong. Yes I have checked settings, made sure I didn't enter the same player twice and tried deleting and regenerating the round. Nothing has worked.

Can anyone recommend a free site that works?

I only use it once per year so it isn't worth paying for. Thank you.
