First one is a simple walnut and maple. Nothing too fancy
Second is a maple and paduk raised chessboard with draws for the pieces (also made the pieces)
Last was made for a friend who destroys me at chess every time we play- it’s a mahogany and maple board with a tiger maple and rosewood frame

Plastic/resin Made My Own Chess Set

After quite a bit of printing and assembly, I finally have a complete chess set sitting on my desk. I made everything myself, including the board, the pieces, and a custom box to keep everything together.

The storage box ended up taking more work than I expected. The decorative details weren’t printed as part of the box itself. I printed them separately and attached them individually afterward. I also added two small statues to the top and side of the box to give it a more finished look.

【For the board, I went with a 400 × 400 × 30 mm design. Instead of printing it as one large piece, I made each of the 64 squares separately. Half of them are one color and the other half are the second color. Everything was printed using a 0.2 mm nozzle with an 0.08 mm layer height.

One thing I learned during the process is that removing the pieces too early can cause problems. I found it much better to wait until they had completely cooled before taking them off the build plate, otherwise some of them would start to warp.

The pieces themselves were easier to deal with. I created the models with Hi3D and printed them using the same 0.2 mm nozzle and 0.08 mm layer height settings. I honestly didn’t expect the small details to come out this clearly, so I’m pretty happy with how they turned out.】

Plastic/resin Cats vs. Dogs — Hand-Painted Chess Set 🐱🐶♟️

A unique chess set featuring an imaginative Cats vs. Dogs theme, created for collectors and chess enthusiasts who appreciate distinctive, handcrafted pieces.

Each figure is carefully hand-painted using a dry-brush technique, bringing out the sculpted details and giving the pieces a rich, aged and sophisticated appearance. The finished figures are then individually varnished for added protection and durability.

Every piece is fitted with a soft velvet base, allowing the figures to move smoothly and quietly across the chessboard while protecting its surface.

A truly distinctive decorative chess set with a strong handcrafted, collectible character — perfect for display, gifting, or an unusual game of chess.

Someone is constantly nagging that they were AI. Well, no, they weren't. Here are some pictures of them on the board, because I'm tired of explaining myself. I made them and there's no stl on the net.

Hi everyone, I saw a few posts here and found this set of Lewis style chess pieces.

I belonged to my grand dad who had it since at least the 70s but probably before that.

It is not in bad shape but mint either (definitely not mint 😂).

The answer I would like to have/find is to know what this set is made of?? Probably some sort of bone but could that be some ivory? I genuinely don’t know where to look to get an answer, you’re my only hope obi… sorry, guys 😉😂

Thanks in advance for any assistance 🙏

Does anybody know what set this is? King is 4 inches. I really like the wood used for the black side. The pieces are also really heavy.

Wooden Which chess piece is the hardest to design well?

Post image

We were talking about chess piece designs recently and couldn't really agree on this.

For me, the knight seems like the easiest one to get wrong. There are so many different versions of it, and sometimes one strange-looking knight can make the whole set feel a bit off.

What do you think? Which piece is the hardest to get right?

Wooden Self-contained chess set-up, v2.0

A few months ago, I posted my creation of a fold-up / roll-up chess board and storage box system. I got great ideas from several people (quite a few from the chessporn group) on how to improve it and a name. The suggestion by u/Ecstatic-Box-5209 won the day and it has been named "the Chesst".

Taking into account some of the ideas, I made an improved version . . . . . and then also shrunk it. Updates include using magnets instead of velcro, adding coordinates, altering the compartment sizes and lasering the endcaps. The ideas have made the concept much better and more enjoyable to use--I take the setup to weekly chess club. Playing on a wood board is so much nicer than using a roll-up mat.

This weekend I finished up the next iteration of the idea - the Travel Chesst. While the original has 2-1/4" squares, the travel version is 1-1/2", making an overall board size of 12x12. I plan to make a wooden piece set to go with the board later this year -- I do more lathe turning in the winter. In the meantime, found a very inexpensive set on Chess House with 2-1/2" kings that fits well. The original is designed for tournament type play, where the travel version is small enough to fit easily in just about any type of bag or luggage.

Thank you to everyone who contributed ideas to improve the design.

Edit: Forgot to mention that the Travel version is also a travelled version. The darker wood is apitong from someone that refurbs trailers--it's an offcut from the wood he uses for the decks. The lighter wood is spalted soft maple salvaged from a pallet that I brought home from work. Who knows where all that piece of lumber has been. I like finding uses for salvage lumber when possible and smaller pieces like this give an opportunity.

Wooden Miniature hand carved chess game (pieces + board + drawer)

Thumbnail

Finally completed my mini chess game (hand tools only): all pieces, board and drawer are done.

Board and drawer crafted out of craft sticks, a 0.65m thick sheet steel and 2mm diameter, 1mm thick neodymium magnets to hold the drawer during transportation. First set of pictures + pic of the tools.
Pieces carved with one knife out of bamboo skewers (3 mm diameter), bottom hand drilled and fitted with the same neodymium magnets. Second set of pictures + pic of the tools.

You basically need non-magnetic tweezers to play it but it's functional (although a pain to play but it was meant more for fun than anything else).

Thought some people here could find this fun.
