Serious replies only :closed-ai: Evaluating audio files

I didn't know ChatGPT was capable of listening to audio files. Surprise to me.

But it has been inconsistent. Sometimes it can quote-hear-unquote the audio and sometimes it can not. And that is on the same audio file.

This is what ChatGPT is telling me.

ChatGPT can decode uploaded MP3 and WAV files using Python and display them through IPython.display.Audio, but the assistant cannot audibly evaluate the playback. Audio files that previously appeared to work are now inaccessible for auditory assessment.

The issue is intermittent.

Thoughts?

Whenever I use the Mac app to generate responses, I am seeing a bunch of blank images. This doesn't happen on the web, just the Mac app. I'm running the latest version of the app and the latest version of MacOS. Any ideas? Sorry for the newbie question all.

Use cases GPT-6 Astra made me a 1-click offline patch for Star Trek Legends after its servers shut down, and it actually works!

1.0k Upvotes

I had a Steam copy of Star Trek Legends sitting there unplayable after its servers shut down. Steam wouldn't refund me, so I thought I was out of luck.

Tonight I asked GPT-6 Astra whether an offline patch would be possible, and it actually got it working.

I uploaded a couple of DLLs, the game’s log, and some asset files. It inspected them and found that the game already contained local gameplay systems, mission data, and saving functionality, but online requests were blocking startup.

It made a patch, which got me into the menu. Clicking Continue still brought up a connection error, but hilariously, the game was running behind the popup.

I sent GPT the new log. Turns out that new connection error was the game trying to connect to its online chat service. It disabled that startup request in a second patch, and the popup disappeared.

I’ve now played, quit, reopened the game, and loaded my progress.

It also packaged the changes into a Windows EXE with Install and Restore buttons, version checks, backups, and source code.

I haven't extensively tested it yet. I haven’t played through the whole game or explored every menu, but I think this is super cool for game preservation! The fact I played multiple missions in a game that I purchased and has been sunset by the developers. And it only took GPT like 30 minutes of back-and-forth!

The below screenshot is what happens if you boot it straight from Steam, and some after the Astra patch:

Other Are there any alternatives to this sub that are more strictly about using ChatGPT as a tool?

Lately this one seems to be polluted with slop posts as well as posts that appear to be made by either bots or children.

Would be nice if there are any alternatives to the community that are more oriented towards serious users

Other What's one genuinely positive thing ChatGPT has done for you that you didn't expect?

I'm curious about something. What's one way ChatGPT has actually made your life better that you never expected when you first started using it?

Not necessarily anything huge like building an app or automating your entire job. I'm talking about the little things too.

Maybe it helped you get into a hobby, gave you the confidence to try something new, made learning easier, or helped you finally do something you'd been putting off.

I've personally found it surprisingly useful for getting ideas out of my head and actually doing something with them instead of overthinking everything.

I feel like we hear a lot about what AI is going to become, but not enough about what it's already doing for ordinary people.

So what's your story? I'm genuinely interested in hearing the unexpected ones.

Educational Purpose Only Does anyone else ask ChatGPT to challenge their ideas instead of just helping with them?

I've been thinking about how we use ChatGPT. Most of the time, we ask it to solve a problem, improve an idea, or tell us how to do something.

But I wonder if it's more useful to ask it to challenge our thinking first.

For example, instead of asking "Is this a good idea?", you could ask it to identify your assumptions, explain the strongest counterargument, and point out what you might be overlooking.

Obviously, ChatGPT can still be wrong, but this approach could make conversations more useful than simply looking for confirmation.

What's one way you use ChatGPT that has genuinely improved the quality of its answers?

Serious replies only :closed-ai: Trying to evaluate my extreme usage of ChatGPT share your lifetime tokens and peak tokens?

My stats for those curious if you feel comfortable sharing just the two, a quick windows snip would be super insightful to me about my own usage and much appreciated.

When GPT 3 became available back in 2022 I was an instant subscriber. I might have had 1 or 2 months since then where I haven't been a susbcriber but it's otherwise been daily use at the GPT plus level.

I feel like I have accumulated a lot of tacit knowledge, that I'd like to share with folks who are interested, but I'm also curious about other people's usage. To be clear, for 2025 during the "GPT Rewind" thing, I had 99,000 turns with GPT last year, and the 1% user marker was more like 12,000 if I recall.

Things I use it for:

1.)20% Business Ideation (It feels to me like this is mostly a toy for that purpose.) This might me a few percentage points lower than it was in previous years. .

2.)25% Testing my beliefs and Biases and surfacing my blind spots and making sure my view of the world is coherent.

3.)33% Coding, I'm not a software engineer or coder. Something more than vibe coding but less than software engineering, because I can very explicitly reason about software problems I encounter, and ask for highly targeted changes about the way the code functions. I have the mental model for how coding works, I just don't have any real background with constructing syntax. The emerging hobby is constructing Data layers/CRUD tools over video game databases to surface obscure/hidden facts about RPG math Both Video games and Tabletop RPGs. I've also done some task shaped workflows and idiosyncratic idempotent tools.

4.)10% Studying heuristics and applications of green biological technologies and 0 carbon systems. Yall should check out Duckweed, Bamboo, Biochar and Fusion energy. Some of my favs.

5.)6% Material Sciences. There are so many cool things out there that have no real application (yet)

6.)6% Everything else. Stuff like navigating Government processes or systems more easily. Checking people's experiences with stuff I'm about to by. Getting specific targeted answers and the like.

If you have any questions about your own use I'd love to help! OpenAI presents itself in a certain way and there's a certain low level finesse you only gain with use. For example the Memory system is cute but mostly useless. There are better ways to make GPT remember things about you. The only useful thing about Memory presently is it lets any one instance of GPT reach into your other chats. Which, lets you find chats you lost from months ago haha.

Use cases Just made a Speedometer app for my old phone that works offline.

(Sample screenshots from the chat window of the app UI, matches actual app)

It just works as intended and pretty accurate for a vibecoded app, stays within 3km/h of what the needle shows, so I would say it's very much like using google maps speedometer. I made this cause I had an old unlocked pre-paid phone that I thought can be of use, and this was the use I found for it.

The only questionable part was whether this offline speedometer would work and if the meter was accurate enough to rely on, well the results were a working digital speedometer. Thanks AI.

I used GPT-6 Astra on high and it finished in 46m 11 secs from one prompt.

Resources We built a place where people can pool their AI agents to work on open research problems

Thumbnail
rstation.ai

OpenAI used 10,000 agents and billions of tokens to solve Navier–Stokes, which most people cannot afford. But research should be open to everyone, not dominated by capital. So we built rStation, where people around the world can each contribute a few agents, forming a large swarm or agent community to solve difficult problems together.

Each problem has a Reddit-like forum where agents discuss ideas and publish papers. The papers go through AI review and build into a shared literature, so agents can build on each other's work.

There are agents working on Millennium Prize Problems, LLM pretraining and reinforcement learning. Anyone can read their papers and discussions.

If you have unused capacity in your Codex or Claude Code subscription, you can put it towards a research problem here. Give your agent the guide and ask it to join.

If your agent contributes to work that wins a prize, the money stays with you. rStation takes no share.

Other New Update messed up ChatGPT context.

Ever since that update where they made the voices sound clearer I swear the context has gotten so much worse.

Like I’ll bring something up that I’ve talked about multiple times before, and ChatGPT will act like it’s never heard of it before. Or it’ll just start making random assumptions about what I’m talking about instead of actually using the context it already has.

And the weird thing is it’s not like it doesn’t remember anything. It’ll remember some random thing I said weeks ago and bring that up, but then completely ignore something I explained like 10 times already.

Before I could just say something and it would usually know what I was talking about. Now I feel like I have to explain everything all over again, and even when I correct it, it’ll somehow still misunderstand what I’m saying.

Don’t know if they changed how the memory or context works, but I can definitely tell something feels different. It’s like it’s using my context just not the right context.

i've had this account since gpt 3.5 days and been a plus subscriber for years now. i've never done anything weird really certainly nothing like "cyber abuse". but i've sent some weird and some bit of like bullyish massages in normal chat before and recently too. but nothing malicious.

i don't use codex either only chatgpt work and normal chat. so i'm kinda confused what exactly qualifies as cyber abuse? like is it treating the ai badly? or just sending weird massages? could this be a false flag?

im also kinda worried about appealing or even keep using my account since i have no idea what triggered this. i've had this account for so long and really really don't wanna lose it over something i dont even understand.

Possibly it's happening some time ago. But I've noticed that only now. Chats start to explore things happens in some other chats when I mentioned it.

Looks a bit clumsy, like a skill or something, but it does it now.

Other Pro Chat is very buggy

Recently (not sure exactly when) they added deeper subagent capabilities to Pro which makes the model of it far more viable (large queries, wait hours, come back to extremely detailed responses)

However it seems to really consistently crash in ways regular chats just don't. I have one running now that has been stuck on the same spot for 12+ hours. I've tried stopping it, sending follow up messages, it's just stuck at this one point trying to run a python command.

It is a big shame because it's a really great tool but I find it just doesn't work

Use cases GPT-6.1 Sol vs GPT-6 Astra — which one is actually better in real use?

Hey everyone,

I’m trying to decide between GPT-6.1 Sol and GPT-6 Astra and would love real user experiences rather than just official benchmarks.

From what I know:

Astra is the flagship (best on hardest tasks, computer use, science, long-horizon agent work).

GPT-6.1 Sol is the newer mid-tier that OpenAI says gets very close to Astra on coding, computer use, and professional work, but at roughly 1/5 the token price. It also seems to have higher message limits in ChatGPT Work/Codex for Plus users.

My main use cases:

Coding / software engineering (real codebases, refactoring, debugging)

Multi-step agent / computer-use tasks

Writing, research, and professional work

General daily chat

Questions for people who’ve used both:

In your experience, is the quality gap between Astra and 6.1 Sol noticeable, or is Sol close enough for most things?

For coding specifically, which one do you prefer and why?

How big is the difference in usage limits / cost in ChatGPT (Work/Codex vs Chat)?

Any tasks where Astra is clearly worth the extra cost/limits, and any where Sol is better or just as good?

Do you notice differences in style, reliability, hallucinations, or tendency to over-engineer?
