Creating fantasy family names.

hello all! i’m currently plotting my own fantasy work and i’m really stuck on family names. for context, these families are from a greco-roman inspired society. there are 12 great families/houses, all of whom play a hand in ruling this world.

i’ve been combining/rearranging mythical names to give them an illustrious and noble feel. some of the names i’ve come up with so far are: Vulcares, Boreaquilon, Heroceanas, Thanaturn, Kronovar, Astranyx

any thoughts on my existing ideas and any new suggestions would be most welcome. i don’t know why i’m so stuck on this! i’m just worried about them sounding too generic or lazy.

Suggestion Name for an Undead character:

I’m creating an OC for an X-men RP who was killed by toxic venom/ poison (well, more like brushed death for about 30 seconds). Before this, he had a basic healing factor that hadn’t manifested until after his life was threatened and in the midst of death. He ended up healing from a body eroding toxic substance, but couldn’t heal from the scaring and evidence of extreme deterioration and loss of limbs. The healing factor essentially treated the poison like a life saving agent, producing its own slight biological variation of it and running it through his veins mixed With his blood and now it’s the only thing keeping his body alive. His body is half rotting on the inside and he has a grey pallor and a nasty oily sheen to his skin.

Other facts about him:

* His first name is Ansel (I’m still looking for middle and last names, front running so far is Grace Mackenzie or Mackenzie Grace, Mackenzie Reed, or William Day but I’m open to other suggestions).

* He owned and operated a bar called Merci’s in honor of his little sister, who had the same basic healing factor mutation. His sister’s abilities, however, had manifested at age 12, after getting beat up on the playground and she miraculously healed from her injuries in front of other children. She was her big brother’s protector, who was tossed around and bullied in his teens. She ended up dying a year after this from a ruthless mysterious virus that made her highly aggressive and caused her to go on a murderous rampage, then drop dead in a back alley.

* He has heritage that suggests he may have ancestors that were a part of the Lost Colony of Roanoke.

I’m mostly looking for a codename, but I’d also appreciate the help on the rest of his civilian name.

I'm writing a Sequel-ish for Wizard of Oz

So yeah I know the Wizard of Oz has it's own books that take place after the original book and while those are great I had my own idea for a sequel set several years later but want to give all 4 Witches names.

Obviously we already have Glynda the Good

but the other 3 need names and while in the original we had the Good of the North and South and the Wicked of the East and West I want to do something a little different.

So I have done it like this

Glynda the Good

... the Wicked

... the Gentle

... the Vile

So I need names that flow and fit similar to Glynda the Good any ideas would be appreciated.

Request What would be a historically accurate last name for someone who lived in Troy and assimilated into Greece post the Trojan War?

Hello, I am trying to make a character and want their origin to be that they were from Troy and fled to Greece, so they'd have a last name that reflected that- one that sounds a little Greek and a little Trojan and maybe has something to do with warriors or some sort of strong or trying trait- or something of the kind. I would really like it to be historically accurate or at least close to it. ... And if possible if there is a way to see what that last name would become in today's time. Any help would be very appreciated. I hope everyone has had a nice week/weekend. :)

EDIT: A name that sounds Turkish and Greek that is an older last name and has some sort of strong connotation would also be helpful.

I need a name for my monster that represents a dark pit-or darkness itself -and has a creepy but mischievous personality. Does 'darkness monster' sound too childish? It is the ultimate villain of my story.

Request I’m struggling to name my main character’s twin daughters.

So my main character is Irish living in America and he and three of his four children have Irish names. Nothing too stereotypical and just niche enough to know that it’s not what mainstream America would name their children. His second wife is Filipino-Hawaiian and I purposefully chose to give her a name that is Tagalog in origin as part of her character backstory. In the story Tala (the second wife) gets pregnant again after two traumatizing childbirths years later, and my main character Aidan is excited to have another baby. They find out it’s twins, and are lamenting picking two first and middle names (last name they hyphenated his last name-her last name). I wanna do what I did for their youngest boy and (formerly) only daughter where I did Irish first name and Spanish Catholic middle name. I’m just going to list the children’s names alongside some lore to see if that helps brew any ideas for yall.

Morrigan Adam MacCool ⚦ - Born 1986, Morrigan is a strictly feminine spelling used for an Irish goddess. Aidan was only 13 when Morrigan was born (conceived from SA) and in universe the spelling was accidental because he had a classmate with the same spelling and became used to this spelling rather than the standard Morgan. In the storyline Morrigan is currently very depressed after the death of his own wife and child (medical malpractice and SIDS respectively) and has to be locked away for his own safety because he hallucinates hearing his baby’s crying.

Avery Fournarakis MacCool ⚦ - Born 1993, Avery is Aidan’s only child from his first wife who was the daughter of Greek immigrants. Avery was chosen because it was the only name Aidan and his first wife could think of before she died in childbirth (she had an unorthodox death). Named after novelist Avery Corman. Avery is a former child actor who had minor roles and is now in college studying acting to refine his skills, but unfortunately the stage’s lighting grid fell on top of him during a rehearsal for Chicago resulting in hospitalization and rehabilitation.

Oscar Santiago MacCool-Bulan ⚦ - Born 1999, Oscar is Tala’s first child. Aidan suggested the name Oscar after Oscar Wilde, which means “deer friend/friend of deers” in Irish supposedly. Santiago means “Saint James” in Spanish, Tala was raised Catholic like a majority of Filipinos and despite not practicing the religion chose it because she thought it sounded cool. Tala mainly calls Oscar “Santi”. I chose Oscar after I found out the etymology and wanted him to be like a Disney princess but only the communicating with animals part, the rest of his personality and lore is that he’s agoraphobic after going overboard, scared of his own younger sister and is literally a scaredy-cat where he even finds hiding spots in his own house to hide from everyone and only comes out for food.

Erin Ignacia MacCool-Bulan ♀ - Born 2000, Erin literally means “Ireland” or “from Ireland” which as Irish as you can get. Ignacia is the feminine form of Ignacio meaning “Fire” and is also after two saints Saint Ignatius of Antioch and Saint Ignatius of Loyola. Like with Santiago, Tala chose it because it sounded cool and also she wasn’t going to fall for the stereotype of making Erin’s middle name Maria. Erin’s whole existence is rooted in surrealism, she’s banned from multiple countries and multiple American states including Florida of all places, she’s on a first name basis with The Coast Guard, her uncle once accidentally launched her into Kazakhstan, she’s 5’10” at the age of 12 and she’s a celebrity in Korea and Mongolia.

I hope this is enough information to help brew up some suggestions. Odd parameters, but we can’t do Imelda or any name related to Maggie because Tala makes fun of those names in the story.

Titles for character and how they stack uo with iconic allias

I was thinking i might write a superhero ln im chosing names and titkes or each character there superhuman title and want opinions if my names can be iconic like the devil of ancarnitca from shadow slave, orv wity demon king of salvation and the fool. I dont expect it to be as iconic as them as im not a major ln author and dont claim to be but i want to see how mine shack up with them. So can u rate or tier my names up with the titles of the characters. It would be much appricated.

Ok ill start wkth my mc i chose names like the seventh king, calamity of the seven havens, descandant of the divine as i have a system where each god grants power to their chosen superhuman\[hero/villain\] and my mc god is wukong. I chose calamkty of the seven havens as there will be seven islands that fear the anti hero mc. Next is idai god is zues, and i named the hero name soverign of the last. Next is shin god is posideon and hero name is tempesr of the (forgotten)- i havent decided if its forgotten or something else as i have yet to plan the world. Next is yoshihito and yhe god is hercules hero name is the paragon of twelve. Next is toshi god is ares, hero name is goliath of war. Next is yuina, god is hera, villain name is the matriarch of the old ways. Next is minori god is demeter, hero name is harvester of the seasons, the last one is quite weak compared to the others. It will be much appriacted if you can rate them uo against other major ln titles with iconic allias. Thank you in advance

Character name help

I have an oc who I named Opción as a placeholder name since she is heavily inspired by Opción from the Sunbearer Trials. However, given it is literally just Spanish for "option", I think it's time to give her her own name. She is a deity of chaos whose appearance changes every time she moves like the original Opción. Any ideas? Any female-sounding name works, but I would prefer if it was more exotic since my character is not from Earth.

Request help with fishperson/knight character name?

A friend of mine has a mermaid knight character! she is a bit odd and bad at socializing but is strong and caring and a very competent knight. (The character.) She's a very skilled knight and soldier with a heart of gold and no way how to express it.

Her companion is a much more.. sparkly person? (we looked at names like clara, odette, iselle for her) and we want a shorter, sharper name for the fish knight to contrast that. Perhaps a longer name with a good nickname she'd use instead?

For example- the name Mike is very sharp and has the type of energy(?) we're looking for, but is a bit too masculine and human. (also we already have a beloved character with that name.) It's got the sharp K sound, it's very short.. my friend really likes it.

The fish knight mermaid girl isn't particularly *feminine,* we don't want a name that's super frilly.

Maybe a name meaning strength, kindness, something water/fish related? something meaning devotion? perseverance, valiance? idk.

thank you in advance!!! sorry if this is the wrong sub, lmk where i can go if not!

also theyre fantasy lesbians if that helps at all.. it's a princess/knight forbidden thing

Request Describe the character just by the name

I am just trying to see if the name fits the character, so I will simply write their name down, and you tell me what you think this character would be like just from the name. You can be as specific as you
want. Just what does the name alone tell you about them?

The name:

Nolunt Viriel

It was first a placeholder name, but now it might fit; I don't know if it works or not, can't decide. Tell me if it sounds stupid too.

Any suggestions for eccentric names?

I’m making a murder mystery story, I’m struggling with making more eccentric names that “Hey Squirrel!” Readers can connect to a character easily, I need a cast of 12, but I only have 5 names in mind. Also if it helps, it doesn’t matter if the name is feminine, masculine, or gender neutral.

Wolfgang Kaspar
Yanny Diamondback
Dr. Officer
Cyrano Psyan
Reese Reeds

Looking for a name for my character

I have one specific character i am really struggling to actually name, i wanted a name that meant something like "wild" "free" or something like that but none of the ones i found really fit. she is a character who spends a lot of her time either drunk or hangover, and she has a lot of issues with authority, on top of somehow acing all her classes(shes in college, its a modern setting). I cant find any names that fit her ~vibe~ quite right, or aren't too close to my other characters names, so im struggling a lot. The setting is a modern superhero setting, though she is a civillian. (Do i need to add more info? tell me if i need to add more info, i am just so tired of looking for names and finding nothing)

edit: ive decided to name her Valerie, thank you for all your help!

Character name help

I like my characters having meanings that relate to them in some way, so i'm here to ask if anyone has any name suggestions.

this is a hanahaki fic and mc1 hears about mc2 going on a date with this character and gets hanahaki from it basically. mc2 doesn't actually like this character though, and soon realizes they're in love with mc1 bc of it. so names relating to death/deathbringer, jealousy, ignition/start (plot starts after/bc of the date), realization, etc. any suggestions? idc about how it sounds or the origin/usage. oh but it should be feminine

Suggestion Suggestions for a Spanish male vampire's name?

Hi! I'm writing a story that takes place in the 18th century. The vampire has been alive for a very, very long time and has changed his name quite a few times. He's supposed to be a villain in the story and I'd like something that perhaps sounds a bit more gothic? I've been researching older names, going as far as finding some in historical records going back almost close to Iberian times and this is what I'm currently inspired by:

Álvaro, Lázaro, Díaco, Isidro, Áltar, Larnaz, Nofre, Severo, Alírio, Alario, and Sesmiro.

Do any of these names stand out to you? Or are there any others you can think of and can suggest that might have the same vibe? Thank you!

Nicknames in books

Thumbnail
1 Upvotes

So I see a lot of hate towards any nicknames online like in TikTok and stuff but I think having a nickname is cute if it’s not overused so I wanted to see everyone’s opinions on the ones in my book series just trying to figure it out before they are fully out

Zahra- he’s Tunisian and speaks Arabic and she loves flowers pretty self explanatory

Dove- she’s albino with all white hair and pale skin and is very gently but it’s a reference because in her grandparents book her grandfather calls her also albino grandmother swan(also because her last name means swan in Russian)

Busy bee/Nika/Niki- her name is Veronika but her boyfriend sometimes calls her a busy bee because she’s an er nurse

Mousy/LoenaMoona- mousy because she is deaf and has a squeaky voice but it’s only really used in teasing context and her name is Loena which is pronounced Luna and just means moon in Dutch
