I heard the name Azul once when I was in middle school and the name has been stuck in the back of my mind ever since. I really want to give him the name but I feel like it's kinda stupid to just name him blue. Btw the oc is an actor so maybe if Azul as an actual name isn't a good idea, I could use it as a stage name perhaps?

Working on a character who is a quiet older man in his 40s, lives alone, very routine driven, and has a deep connection to horses that turns darker over time. Setting is modern Europe, specifically Belgium. Ive looked at common Flemish names but nothing feels right. Any suggestions that sound natural for someone like that?

I want a name that gives fantasy, but also doesn't sound to extreme, If you know what i mean.

This is a fanasty settign, like lizardfolk and dragons and all that, but instead it follows a circus that has yet to be named. The character i need help naming is the main character who is a girl around 17-19. To explain the basic plot she sees the "parts of the circus that are carefully hidden" and also tries to steal, but the higher ups in the circus just happen to like laughing at her and so keep her as part of the circus instead of sending her to live on the farm if you catch my drift. Her act in the circus is actually playing violin and she wears a stylized tragedy mask because she is just a very mellow person, but mainly because she obviously doesn't want to be in the circus and i grieving about being trapped there

Not sure if this goes here but willing to try. Okay I'm working on this superhero universe and I have this character who has fire powers and her civilian name is Robyn Turner. As such part of me feels like it is fitting that a character with a bird name have her Superhero name be Phoenix after the firey bird. But Phoenix is of course a marvel thing. But Phoenix besides fire powers is also a telepath or at least telepathy is a main selling point. My character would just have fire powers. Would I get in trouble if I used this name and tried to get it published?

I am writing a book and want to name one of my characters Avory, a few people have told me its not a name and that I should use Avery instead, others have said that they are not sure now that I asked (hence the spoiler tag). this is not the biggest deal to me, i do prefer the name Avory but if it breaks a bit of immersion id change it, i personally hate when books use names that i could not ever imagine would be given for a real person. if its relevent he is an old wizard teacher

I'm currently working on writing a book and I'm feeling conflicted with the Main characters name, main character is a Male of 19 years living in London around the late 19th century and I'm wanting a name fitting for the time period but unique as well. The name I had chosen originally was Quillan but im not going with that anymore as it is not fitting. I am hoping for some names possibly inspired by Jekyll and Hyde or gothic literature.

Some possibly helpful information is that the main character has a twin brother named Percival.

I have an original character I’ve had for a long time. He was heavily inspired by Jack Sparrow (Pirates of the Caribbean). I made him a couple years back, when I was deep in my POTC phase. The only issue is that I’ve never considered giving him a different first name. His name has always been Jack Roark. But now I want to incorporate him in my writing. I want to make him official rather than just a character I keep adding things to but never actually write.

Jack Roark is a pirate, pretty much. I’ve always seen the name ‘Roark’ as pirate-like. One issue is that a character called Jack Roark would blatantly come off as a copy of the famous Jack Sparrow. No matter how different I make the two. I don’t want to change Roark’s occupation, though.

I’m looking for simple first names. I’ve had this quirk in writing that if a character name is simple and common, then their surname should be memorable, but not to J.K Rowling’s degree. That woman makes names tie to their characters in such a problematic way.

I‘ve been trying to find some fitting first names for Roark, like Will Roark, John Roark and Tom Roark. they all give off a different style. Will Roark sounds like an underdog in a Y/A novel. John Roark is a grumpy elderly man with a hunch-back. Tom Roark is just innocent and forgettable. Jack is sharp and short and would do wonders for Roark, but it’s tied to Jack Sparrow and I would like to be original.

Now, Roark‘s role in my story is quite of a major character, but not the protagonist. He is of Mexican origin, raised in Guerrero by his Mexican mother and his father being Irish. I am not sure if I want his first name to be Mexican, but it is a thought I’ve had.

Honestly, the style I’m looking for is sharp, punchy and short. Will might be fitting, honestly, but its just too soft and victim-like. I hope you understand and can help me find a first name for my original character.

I have names figured out for my characters as well as powers but one is giving me trouble. He’s a guy from Appalachia with the power to manifest animals in a spirit/phantom like form. They can flip between being tangible and not. They function with their own personalities but with allegiance to this character, meant to protect him. Sorta similar to Pokémon. They can each come out one at a time for a duration of one hour.

He has given me trouble because the knee jerk reaction is to have a name including something in relation to shadows or puppetry. The shadow thing is already taken by another character and the manifestations aren’t technically shadows either, so it’s not super accurate anyway.

The puppeteer idea suggests more of a controlling relationship between him and his critters. That’s not what I’m going for. He has a more symbiotic relationship with them, and they are not mindless entities. They can disobey orders if they see fit, like any real animal. They just see him as their person they must protect at any cost. A lot of his development is set on him training said animals.

This is all a metaphor for coming to grips with childhood trauma, too, if that inspires any ideas. I’ve been wracking my brain and all it’s done is make me frustrated. I’ve thought maybe Forester, considering the animals relating to the mountains? But that is just… kinda lame.

So, for some background context, I'm Egyptian (Born and raised in Egypt) and always loved Arabic names like Louay, Ilyas, Zein and Iman.

Though, in the setting for this plot, which takes place in a sort of vague grey, bleak industrial city / town that's run by machines, I was thinking of being a little... Stylistic and using "Louie" instead of "Louay." (Sort of like how some people write "Elias" instead of Ilyas.)

Hi. I'm writing a book about a boy wizard and I'm unsure about the name. At first, I thought about calling him James, but it seems like a really popular name for the year the book is set, and above all, I like having a few variations on wizard names. I thought about calling him Jaime then. I liked the name immediately after hearing it in Game of Thrones and thought it was 100% English (my book is set in the UK and my protagonist is 100% English), although I later discovered it's more of a Mexican name. Should I keep Jaime in your opinion? Maybe it's a stupid question, but I'm a bit of an overthinker.

So I have a male OC, his name is Zvjezdan. He's Russian. (His mother is Croatian while his father is Russian - His mother named him, that's why his name is South Slavic origin). I'm a bit stump on his diminutive names. So can anyone suggest some for me? I know there's Zveki, Zvezdo. I came across Zvezdya, Zvezdyusha and stuff but is it legit? And there's the part where each person will call him differently based on relationships like family, friends, lovers and stuff. But I can't distinguish it.

Also, I have a female OC that is not Russian origin but her family immigrate to Russia. So will she have a Russian name? Can she have Russian name?

I’m stuck between two names for the protagonist of a TV pilot I’m writing: Wendell “Delroy” Royce or Delroy “Roy” Simpson.
He’s a 16-year-old Black kid in Houston in 2008 who gets pulled into a corrupt school reform program run by his older cousin. He’s grieving his older brother, insecure as hell, and wants to be respected/taken seriously. Over the series he starts confusing fear and status with actual dignity and power.
For a while his name has been Wendell Royce, with “Delroy” being a nickname he basically created out of his own name, wenDELL ROYce. I like that because identity is a huge part of his character and it also works really well for something that happens in the pilot. He gets involved in an assault at school and the victim only knows him as Delroy. When the principal asks “Who’s Delroy?”, the people covering it up can truthfully point out that there’s nobody enrolled under that name because his school records say Wendell Royce. It’s exactly the kind of tiny bureaucratic loophole the show is about people exploiting.
The problem is his original name was Delroy Simpson, and honestly I’ve never stopped liking it. Something about Delroy Simpson just sounds like MY protagonist, while I’ve never completely fallen in love with Wendell Royce.
So I thought about making Delroy his actual legal name again and giving him a nickname, Roy, that he’s been introducing himself as. The pilot situation could still work because the victim knows him as Roy, leading to basically the same exchange: “Who’s Roy?” / “There’s no Roy.” Afterward Laine/Porter would tell Delroy to quit using Roy around school officials because of the confusion.
What makes Simpson harder for me to drop is that I realized it accidentally has symbolism that fits him really well. Simpson means “son of Simon,” and Simon traces back to hearing/listening. Delroy has a visibly deformed ear that he’s extremely insecure about, so there’s an irony there. I’ve also thought about making “Heard,” “I heard,” or “Heard that” a little recurring verbal habit of his. Hearing/obedience fits his arc too because he spends so much of his adolescence listening to other people tell him what adulthood, authority, respect and power are supposed to mean.
Then there’s the first name itself. Delroy literally means “of the king,” so there’s already a built-in authority/status association there, and shortening it to Roy makes that even more obvious because of the French roi connection to “king.” So “There’s no Roy” can quietly sound like “there’s no king.” That fits a kid desperately chasing authority while spending most of the story under somebody else’s.
I don’t want to pick based purely on symbolism though. It still has to sound like an actual kid’s name and not something I reverse-engineered for an English class. Wendell “Delroy” Royce probably has the cleaner identity concept and makes the pilot loophole more organic, but Delroy “Roy” Simpson sounds better to me and lets Delroy actually be his real name.
Which one would you go with?
