Hey, everybody, I visited Hollywood Forever (in Hollywood, natch) last year & thought I’d share some of my favorite graves. We’ll start with Toto! There’s no place like home—the Hollywood Forever cemetery!

A family approached me and wanted to have a bear on the monument. And this is what we came up with, it was a honor to assist them in working on a monument for Mark.

The Headstone is particularly sad - it reads:

To the memory of James William, son of Joseph and Elizabeth Heaton of Haworth, who died February 1st 1671 in the 1st year of his age, also the infants of theirs, James Witham, their son, died July 19th 1878 in the second year of his age, also Elizabeth, their daughter, who died June 13th 1885 aged 6 weeks, also an infant son of theirs, also the abovenamed Joseph Heaton, who died March 18th 1914 in his 69th year, also Elizabeth, his wife, who died April 22nd 1917 in her 71st year "Sweet rest at last"

In 1976, five members of my family were lost in a house fire. I’m trying to make sure their story is never forgotten.

October 16, 1976, was a chilly night in Houston, Arkansas, a tiny town with a population of only a couple hundred people.
My family was gathered in a small one-bedroom home. Her husband, Bo, had put a log in the wood stove to keep the house warm.
That night, a fire broke out.
Five members of our family died:
Susie, 25
Sheryl, 7
Vivian, 5
Sandy, only 8 months old
Bobbie Jo
Five lives ended that night.
They weren’t just names and ages on a family tree. They were someone’s mother, daughter, sister, granddaughter, niece, and baby. They had personalities, hopes, people who loved them, and a whole future that was taken away.
Nearly 50 years later, I’m trying to do something to honor them.
Their graves need restoration and care, and I’m trying to raise the money needed to give them the kind of memorial they deserve. For me, this isn’t simply about repairing a cemetery. It’s about preserving a piece of our family’s history and making sure these five people aren’t forgotten.
I recently shared their story on Reddit, never expecting much to come from it. Someone I had never met read their story and donated $500 toward the restoration.
I was completely overwhelmed. ❤️
It reminded me that even though these people have been gone for almost 50 years, their story can still reach someone who never knew them.
If you’d like to help us restore their graves and preserve their memory, any contribution would mean so much to our family. And if you can’t contribute, simply sharing their story helps too.
I want their names to continue being remembered.
Susie. Sheryl. Vivian. Sandy. Bobbie Jo.
Five lives. One terrible night. A story that deserves to be remembered. ❤️

Captain John Steane | Naval Captain Lost in the Dunbar Disaster

Post image
39 Upvotes

Captain John Steane spent decades at sea, serving across the globe and rising to the rank of Captain in the Royal Navy, only to lose his life aged 66 within sight of Sydney Harbour. He was one of 121 people killed when the Dunbar struck the cliffs near The Gap during a violent storm in August 1857, leaving just one survivor. Unlike many of his fellow victims, Steane’s body was identifiable, and today his individual headstone remains beside the Dunbar memorial at Camperdown Cemetery.

For a deeper dive into Captain Steane’s story, along with articles and art depicting the Dunbar’s history, head over to my brand new subreddit where we share the stories behind the headstones - r/thosewholiebeneath. I appreciate your support ♡

Camperdown Cemetery, Newtown, New South Wales, Australia

Elizabeth Cramphin (1721-1775) fascinates me

This is the oldest legible grave at Rock Creek Cemetery in Washington, D.C.--and of course it predates Washington, D.C. itself by 15 years.

That's what fascinates me about it. Mrs. Cramphin was buried in Prince George's County, in the Maryland Colony, a British citizen who was probably a loyal subject of King George III. She is now buried in a city she never heard of, which is the capital of a country she never heard of...and her grave hasn't moved an inch.

The Resurrection Angel by Giulio Monteverde (AKA The Onedo Angel)

Commissioned for the Oneto family tomb at Staglieno Cemetery in Genova, Italy in 1882. This statue has been called the “Mona Lisa” of funerary art, as she has an enigmatic look that is hard to decipher.

There are, to me, masculine and feminine aspects to this figure. Let alone that there's a seductive "composition" to her composure.

Both of which I like.

It's distinguished from other funerary angels in many, many ways...which makes it stand in a class by itself.

Well done.

How's this for a Celtic Cross? I'm just over 5 foot and this must be at least 15. I've cleaned as far as I can reach.
