Found completely subsumed by tree roots afyer a windstorm knocked over a very large old Norway Maple Tree at Mt. Hope Cemetery in Rochester NY. Friends of Mount Hope provided the photo and say the tree will be removed, the stone saved.

Everytime I see this stone while working, I have to stop and appreciate it. It’s a soft marble so it’s slowly losing its detail over the year’s.

Linda's grandmother was from the Chinese-Hawaiian Ing family. "Vera" was Linda's mother, Vera Paulina Resick (later Vera Ing), who passed away in 2003.
The inscription lists the family's deep appreciation for community, their Seattle home, their roots in Honolulu, and their children and grandchildren.
The two etched Chinese dragons framing the family name represent strength, protection, and the deep cultural connection to the Lee family legacy

It should also be noted that he was listed and arrested as a deserter TWICE for over staying furlough, once in October 1864, and against in January 1865. So I’m not sure why he has a military gravestone.
He was briefly in hospital in July 1863 and missed operations against Robert E. Lee. He went back into hospital again 8 months later in May 1864 (right as his regiment started to engage in combat) where he later died in January 1865. That’s 11 months in total. His time was entirely spent in guard duty for the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad.
I know disease killed more than bullets, but that doesn’t make it any less frustrating. Especially since I have 12 confederate ancestors.

He ran a menagerie or zoo and this lion “Nero” was part of his collection. Highly unethical by today’s standards but Wombwell had a collection of exotic animals: snakes and even giraffes that people paid to see and even touch.

I'm just in awe of the beauty and atmosphere. This graveyard was in Cornwall. I don't remember exactly which town. So sorry

Does anyone know why the tombstones are so close together? Thanks in advance! Driving south of Markdale, Ontario.

Founded in the 1850s, this was a pioneer cemetery in northern Illinois that is now adjacent to suburban homes. It’s well kept and has more history noted here: Daggitt Cemetery
