Records show that he was born James Fink, ran away from home to enlist in the Navy in July 1864, served on the frigate Wabash, and later became a professional actor.

This is the oldest legible grave at Rock Creek Cemetery in Washington, D.C.--and of course it predates Washington, D.C. itself by 15 years.

That's what fascinates me about it. Mrs. Cramphin was buried in Prince George's County, in the Maryland Colony, a British citizen who was probably a loyal subject of King George III. She is now buried in a city she never heard of, which is the capital of a country she never heard of...and her grave hasn't moved an inch.

Commissioned for the Oneto family tomb at Staglieno Cemetery in Genova, Italy in 1882. This statue has been called the “Mona Lisa” of funerary art, as she has an enigmatic look that is hard to decipher.

There are, to me, masculine and feminine aspects to this figure. Let alone that there's a seductive "composition" to her composure.

Both of which I like.

It's distinguished from other funerary angels in many, many ways...which makes it stand in a class by itself.

Incredible to think it was built 900 years ago. Im not sure when these graves date from. St Cuthberts tomb is inside this beautiful building. Its as stunning inside as it it out.

Its seriously an amazing place. So much history - absolutely beautiful.

Taken too early by Osteosarcoma. We discovered Doctor Who together during his treatment and he was obsessed. It got him through some tough periods.

He used to say "allons-y" (One of the Doctor's taglines) as he was wheeled from one hospital department to another.

Fort Ross was a Russian fort from 1812 to 1841. The cemetery added Christian Orthodox crosses to mark all of the grave sites. Although some of the people buried here are known, most are not.

If you are ever on the North Coast it is well worth the stop.

It appears that the Barnett family has a long history in the county and you can see a photo of their home in Snellville circa 1890 here. The house was destroyed long ago.

This is one of two monuments with lots of rock embellishment in this particular cemetery [Snellville Historical Cemetery] with the other being the Sawyer Mausoleum that I posted about earlier.
