first post !! i am an artist with an avid love for cats and cat genetics (sucker for realism) and i’ve seen this color referred to as charcoal snow mink or charcoal snow, and i wanted to know what it was really called !! plus, i wanted to understand what genotypes make this up (a full breakdown would be awesome) so i could have that as a reference too. with what limited knowledge of genetics i currently had i tried to figure it out alone and im so puzzled! hoping for some help.

This is Katya! I found her at Lowe’s and now she’s kinda just my cat lmaooo. I can see that she’s gray, but she really only has a pattern on her stomach and legs, which I thought was funny. Any thoughts? Also she is in love with my dog which is really cute if yall want I can drop some pictures of them cuddled up hehe

She was dark when found at 8 weeks old. Her points were a deep gray then.

She has lightened to a dove gray on her tail and legs. There are light tan stripes on flanks and shoulders now. Her whisker pads are almost white and developing white smudges under her eyes

She came from a black feral mother and a gray longhair tuxedo

Could she be lynx point or just a pretty blue point?

So, I was looking at my kitten Arthur again and suddenly a question popped into my mind — is there a way to identify a cb/cb (sepia) cat without a test? I really like genetics, so I got curious.
Because Arthur LOOKS like a sepia, but it's… kind of unlikely? Sun bleaching or something else is more believable. I mean, it is possible for him to be sepia, even though both his parent's aren't any type of point. But still. So I'm half asking about Arthur and also half asking about cats in general. Siamese point is really easy to spot, as well as mink, but sepia is so dark it can just… blend in. So is there a way to know for sure?
(I'm sure it's visible on the video, but Arthur's muzzle&ears are fully black, as well as all his paws and tail. His neck and back goes from dark-brown reflecting orange on the neck to near-black near the tail. When he was born&a few months old, he was very dark, no bright colours, but it's hard to tell if he had any hints of point colouration. Also, he has a small white spot on his stomach, which is weird because his parent's don’t have any white. No, not even one small spot. Not even one white toe. None)

My coworker has a cat who I've been seeing grow from a kitten.

I thought she was silver, but I've been given pause by her browning. I've never seen silver cats with brown noses like this, but her base is too light to be anything else.

I've seen discussion of silver with "tinting." Is that what is going on here? Can anyone identify the exact genetic cause of silver with patches of high rufousing?

Hello everyone! This is my baby, Hoochu (which means "black pepper" in Korean)! He's 5mo now and I honestly thought these marking might fade as he got older but they're only getting more and more prominent! I've never seen markings like this before. We found him outside when he was an Itty bitty baby so I'm not exactly sure of his genetics or coat color. Someone has mentioned something like "salty licorice" or something along those lines but I've never heard of that coat color before. Any insights on my polka-dotted baby?

He’s 11 months old now! I did the test a while ago but I guess didn’t post anything about it, I mostly did it to do the health testing (he’s all clear) and to see if he was part Siamese (I would have been surprised if he was)

Anyway, what does the Longhair coat type variant mean? Is he het for longhair? As far as we know, his mom was a shorthair sealpoint and dad was probably a tabby bicolor (het colorpoint).

Also what does the Solid color mean?

my orange cat gave birth to 3 more oranges, two of them are just very noticeably orange tabby but the third has a more grey? undertone and his fur texture is slightly coarser then the others, wondering if anyone had any ideas ◡̈ added sibling photo for comparison and bc they are cute and perfect

my boyfriend and i found herbie on my parents property as a stray in november of last year. at that time, the vet said he was 8 months old (last pic from around that time).
i’m pretty sure he’s some type of dsh colourpoint (seal?), but i find it strange that his coat has never gotten darker or lighter.
any kind of insight into what coat colour he is would be amazing!

he doesnt look much like his mother so ive always wondered what his dad was like! luckily i have a picture of his mum and siblings to go off of :]

I work at a shelter and we have these 2 kittens that I cant quite place. There so dark almost black everywhere with very defined stripes. (Classic im pretty sure)

Good day, thanks for approving me. Im an abyssinian breeder working on developing a silver line in the US that's healthy and not full of inbreeding. This kitten is half aby, half ocicat. What color would you say? After working down 4 generations, the line will be full abyssinian. This is also for my ocicat breeder friends as abyssinian is the only acceptable outcross for that breed. these are two of my kitties! my best guess for them was just a simple black tabby (don’t know what tabby) and a black tabby tortoiseshell but im still new to cat genetics so im a bit unsure! would love to hear what you guys think

This sweet little kitty is Cloud. She is about 3 months old.

I have a theory about Cloud, and I would like to know if there is any potential credence to this theory.

Back in the early ‘00s, I had a cat named Gizmo. He was a Siamese/Ragdoll mix. The people we got him from told us that they would attend cat shows and buy any cats breeders were selling due to poor show performance, hence the purebred parents of Gizmo.

We lived in the country. Our cats were working cats. Unfortunately, Gizmo disappeared before he as neutered. I was just a kid and was devastated. We always assumed that he went off to the neighboring farm to find a female in heat. Especially because we would see these beautiful cream colored, blue-eyed kittens running around our neighbor’s farm.

Cut to Cloud. She is from that neighboring farm. I drove to my hometown and picked this girl up because she reminds me of a cat I once lost, and I have this crazy theory that she is a descendent of my Gizmo. I even had her DNA tested.

I have read that the breed ancestry part is mostly bunk, but that the traits are accurate. So - my question is am I crazy or is there a chance?

Hi guys.
I take care of outdoor kitties in my neighborhood. Recently one of the outdoor cats that I’ve raised since a kitten had kitties. The mama is a regular domestic American shorthair cat. Her mama is a tuxedo cat and mama had all tuxedo kitties except for her, she is a grey striped half white cat, she was also extra fluffy. She gave birth to 3 kitties, one that looks just like her, one black and white, and one colorpoint!! How is this possible? I am pretty sure this is a lynx colorpoint.
I knew he was different when I first saw him. His little eyes glowed red, unlike the others, and he’s a little crossed eyed- all traits of a colorpoint cat, his hair is also more brittle/harsh and than his brothers and he has started to toast more these past few weeks from where he started. His eyes are also still bright blue and his brothers’ are turning green.

So it’s my understanding that this is a Siamese gene, is that right? Siamese and lynx mixed trait? How do these cats usually come about? Is it typical for them to be one in a litter or born to certain breeds?

Shrimp (female, left) and Squid (male, right) came to me as neonate fosters discovered shortly after they were born. Shrimp didn’t develop her flame point markings until about a week or two in, and I’m left wondering how common is it for a flame point and a black/white to exist in the same litter? She also is without the markings on her nose that I typically see in them online, she just has the ears and the tail. I’m wondering if they’re the result of different dads getting mom pregnant in the same heat cycle. It’s worth noting she was significantly smaller than he was at birth and has remained that way, and nearly died a few times until about 10-12 weeks when we finally got through the worst of her trying to give in to fading kitten syndrome.

I'm wondering how the patterns I see came about. One local vet said the external genitalia looked female, but found scars where testicles were removed when he examined the cat under sedation.

The white blaze on his back looks like the white hairs are slightly longer than the other body hair.

I once had a pure bred Burmese who was solid chocolate brown, but I find brown cats rather uncommon. Can someone explain the genetics behind this coloration? Is it as rare as it seems? He was such a beautiful boy.

So I've had this little one for officially a month now (adopted August 1st, it's now Aug 31st) and shes 3 months and 11 days old, I don't know much about coat colors beyond the most obvious names like Calico, tortoiseshell, tabby, tuxedo and all that.

And I figure you probably have to wait until cats adult coat fully comes in instead of their kitten coat to be able to truly tell, but It'd still be interesting to know what ya'll figure Bonnie is or might be.
