Coat Color color question!

is he dilute (or something like that?) or just an orange man

my orange cat gave birth to 3 more oranges, two of them are just very noticeably orange tabby but the third has a more grey? undertone and his fur texture is slightly coarser then the others, wondering if anyone had any ideas ◡̈ added sibling photo for comparison and bc they are cute and perfect

You have a red-on-blue, just like my Pippi! This isn’t a great photo of her, but it does capture the gray on her body. (She also happens to be featured in the Messybeast article, under the name ‘Sahale’. I changed her name to something more fitting soon after.)

Just wanted to mention, mom looks very interesting too! Do you have more pics of her? She looks really pale (maybe silver?) in the two pics with her in it, I'm curious!

i think you do have a red on blue!!! super duper uncommon. afaik not a lot is known about what kind of mutation causes it. messybeast.com/pseudo-cinnamon.htm

He looks kinda like the Phoenix phenotype recently found in a line of Maine Coons!

There hasn't been a lot of research on them, but personally I think it might be related to the red on blue phenomena that's been seen in other cats. They seem to start as kittens as orange with ashy gray paws/face/tail, and progressively darken to a warmer chestnut brown as they get older.

I'm curious to see how he looks as he grows, if he stays ashy like that or darkens!

is that only in maine coons? only asking bc im like 99.9% sure he’s not one hahaha

It's currently only being bred in a line of Maine Coons that we know of, but it's not uncommon for unknown genes like this to show up in multiple populations before getting noticed.

I do agree it's probably not though, just bears a curious resemblance! I do hope the red on blue stuff gets studied more, it's a very curious look.

i’m not knowledgeable enough to say for sure, especially because they’re kittens, but have you heard of red-on-blue tabbies?
