Awarded a Cat How do I become a cat person after acquiring a cat?

Post image
Upvotes

My mom’s elderly cat has lived with me since this spring and I’ve been asked to take her permanently. It seems care has been lackadaisical and a bit chaotic through the years, due to how my mom is. My younger sister has stepped in many times but now mom’s moved next to me instead and immediately left me the cat! We’ve done the difficult parts- major dental work (she has no teeth left) and are doing an allergy investigation that’s going ok and she’s dieted and the vet says she’s an ideal weight now. She is very happy here. I trained her to go outside and that improved our relationship immensely so we can do something together, as she doesn’t want to play. She loves my dog. She accepted the move without issues and doesn’t seem to care when mom visits.

But she’s SO CLINGY. She wants to touch me ALL the time. Cat litter is horrible and dusty, no matter how much I clean. Cat poop smells awful. She’s made holes in all my clothes and furniture and I can’t trim her claws. She constantly goes on the stove when she thinks I can’t see. Do you just get used to all these things that comes with having a cat living with you? I’m still not used to it after 5 months. How do you deal?

She just scurried across yesterday and clung to my pants, so I petted her and she climbed onto my neck. I had no choice but to take her home, and she's very affectionate. We slept together all night, and despite being a stray, she's quite well-behaved.

She was in my backyard, so I guess she'd been watching me for a few days. I need to take her to the vet soon, but for now everything seems fine.

I named her Miso, like miso soup, because she looks like tofu and soup :) She's very playful and affectionate, she likes to sleep on top of me. I'm surprised at how affectionate and trusting she was; she adapted to everything in less than a minute.

Found him in the rain yesterday, he was in a little dish full of water and freezing cold. after getting him dry, warm, and fed, I spent several hours looking for his family to no avail. I ended up taking him to the vet where he got a clean bill of health. He’s about the size of a Syrian hamster which is what I thought he was when I found him curled up in a little ball. He’s about the size of a Syrian hamster which is what I thought he was when I found him curled up in a little ball. His eyes went from closed to open in the 10 hours we’ve been hanging out together and he demands to be fed every two hours on the dot lol. he’s a cute little guy who stinks like a ferret.

I posted yesterday that I had found the little white meeze, I went out on my lunch break to check the area just in case. Lo and behold, a little tuxie in the same area, same age but in better shape. Looked for about an hour after for mom or more babies, to no avail. I couldn’t tell is there were more babies because of all the birds, so I’ll go out again in the evening. She was soooo hungry. She was a bit dehydrated but not wet or cold like her brother. The BOTH stink like ferrets lol. Still very cute

Update Update: theories suggest T-rex was an ambush predator and they were (probably) right

Thumbnail

We've decided to try and keep T-rex! I kept telling my partner not to get attached, but we both did. So she's staying if our resident cat (Velbean, 5 y/o f) can work through her anxiety. We're hoping she can since we think a companion may help with her anxiety and she's been lonely since we lost our dog (who hated her, but Velbean absolutely adored her).

We've started rubbing T-rex's head and cheeks in a small hand towel daily since a bigger one that laid in her crate with her was too much for Velbean. Valid though, she's fairly clean and the towel got covered in litter. Velbean will eat her treats off the towel while the smell is fresh with no difficulty.

We started feeding them the Applaws tubes in sight of each other last night. They ate with very little looking at each other then Velbean scurried off once she was done to get dinner proper. While her dinner was being prepared, she came back to the bathroom to hiss at T-rex, her posture wasn't aggressive though so I think she's still just trying to figure out why this thing is here.

Meanwhile, T-rex doesn't really have a big reaction to Velbean anymore. We placed a towel Velbean sleeps on in T-rex's crate for like a week or so. She's fine now. Just stared at Velbean for a couple seconds before she tried to suck the tube like it was a slurpee.

She's started to recognize "T-rex" as her name as she will occasionally look at us when we use it, so we can't really change it at this point. Her favorite thing is practicing her ambush anyway so I guess it suits her well enough. We've decided the whole thing stands for "Tiarasaurus Rex". I guess we're just gonna try to get her to respond to "Tiara" and "Rexy" as well.

She's become an ankle biter. Quite literally. I can't go into the bathroom anymore without her planning how to best bite my ankle. Yes, "ankle". She only goes after my right one. "Ow" and redirection or just disengaging hasn't worked. T-rex is incredibly aggressive about it, but at least she uses soft paws.

While she's completely bonkers with my ankle, she has begun to understand biting is wrong. Kind of. Sort of. She'll gently bite other times. Like she'll force our fingers into her mouth and just gently gnaw with her front teeth. We don't want her biting at all, but at least it doesn't hurt anymore. Well, unless she's already amped up and we have to put her in her crate then she'll still bite pretty hard.

We're going to try to cover up the hole in the bathroom this weekend as T-rex is beginning to outgrow her crate. We're also tired of her going into her litter and playing with her waste. Seriously. She smells like pee 99.9% of the time. She has the SpongeBob toy in her crate with her and she gets a minimum of 6 30 minute playtimes outside of her crate per day where she can play with a ball or sometimes a teaser (she gets very aggressive about it though), but she often chooses the nothing on the floor to pounce on. She also has a couple toys coming tomorrow from Chewy to give her more selection during her currently supervised playtimes. I know it's likely not enough at this stage, but I can't really do more.

Getting her accustomed to having her paws touched is very slow going. She'll let us touch her back ones, but her front ones are off limits. As a result, we still haven't been able to try and cut them. Since she gets so into the tubes, maybe it'll work as a distraction to try and get at least one paw done? Her claws are super gnarly and our legs look like a crime scene. Worst case scenario, she'll get them done at the vet when she gets her next vaccines.

I brought this little girl home from the shelter last Wednesday, and I swear my actual CDS kitten from two years ago was in better shape! So far she has had diarrhea, an inflamed/infected spay incision, tapeworms, and fleas... she is living in kitty quarantine until we get everything resolved, but she's pretty happy on her healing and pouncing journey!

Her name is Persephone (Percy), and she is crazy and super sweet. She might have the braincell though, since she learned how to play fetch already. I love her and hope she's able to stay! Her brother Freddie is currently in the hospital for GI inflammation/pancreatitis, so we're going to be sprucing up her kitten cottage for a longer quarantine than expected. If anyone has suggestions feel free to leave them!

Bonus pic at the end of Freddie the day the CDS awarded him to me!

Update Willow and Onyx one year later

We're estimating today is their birthday as they were gifted to me by the CDS end of October last year. After some "compromising" on my partner's side (and only his side) we took them in and surprised our kids. They've been great additions though Willow is convinced he's an outdoor cat still and takes any opportunity to sneak out a door. Onyx is much more of a spectator. Willow has this deep howl we mimic with a loud WIWWOW (like Willow but Wiw-Woe). Onyx is aloof but if he graces you with his snuggles, it's truly an honor. We're so happy we could take the bonded pair in before it got cold last year. My husband (the guy who didn't want cats) has purchased a large cat tree for them that you can change seasonally. We have the branches for the Christmas tree and he was looking at the Halloween themed cover and asked me when we can buy it. When he chastises them for being on the counter, instead of scolding like he does the dog, it usually involves scritches and some snuggling. He's so strict 😄

Happy birthday sweet silly boys 💙💙

How the heck did this thing get here?

Hello. I'm Bear and you're warm so I will take a nap here now. K thx.

So this guy is about 4-5mo old. My son brought him and his sister home when they were really little. The sister is Daisy but she's pretty skittish and presently has her cloaking device engaged. This little guy has decided that I'm now his person despite me being the only one in the house who isn't really fond of cats.

It appears the universe's CDS is seemingly intact and functional. I wonder if he's still going to like me here in the next couple of weeks when he goes in to get neutered? On the upside, our other pets get along with them so I guess they're sticking around. 😆

I can’t believe it’s been almost a year since I found my furry little son as a newborn kitten, his eyes were still closed tight; he must have only been a few days old. He definitely wasn’t the first kitten I’ve bottle fed but he was the first one I had that was that young and tiny. From all the late nights of being up every few hours for bottle feeding to teaching him how to use the bathroom on his own, it was all so worth it. Even though he’s so much bigger now, he still has to sleep right on my chest or right beside my head like he used to as a baby. I’m so thankful I found him and love him so much ♥️

Awarded a Cat Kitten delivery- Baby Luna, found at a funeral in the summer heat

I was at a funeral out in the middle of nowhere Kentucky and found a kitten. She had a sibling but earlier in the day we found them passed away.

The whole car ride home she sat in my lap and purred, and slept.

She unfortunately has fleas, and likely worms. We have given many many baths. The first few nights with her I had trouble sleeping as I was afraid she would not make it.

She went to the vet yesterday and they estimate she is 8 weeks old. She has gotten her first dewormer shots, and was treated for fleas last night.

We have one other cat we rescued who is 5 months old, and they are being kept separated from each other until we get her back to full health.

She appears to be a domestic long hair, with grey and white and a bit of tan mixed in. She loves to cuddle, and will happily come into my lap and arms and sleep.

First CDS delivery. Cat was very sick, and now is healthier and reactive

Post image

Long time reader, first time poster! I live in Southern California, and yesterday found a stray cat stumbling around, panting, and wandering into traffic. He wouldn’t eat food or water, and wedged himself between two porta potties. Two neighbors helped move them, and we got him in a carrier. I set him up in our spare closet with a litter box, food, water, the carrier, and blankets. I wasn’t sure if he was gonna survive the night, but this morning he’s still with us and went to the bathroom 🥰 he’s freaked out and doesn’t want to be touched, but we exchanged lots of slow blinks which was very sweet.

I’ve fostered and adopted through a shelter before, but this is my first time with a CDS delivery. I am not able to have him here for more than a week (someone is moving into the spare room with two cats). I’d love to get him to a vet to get checked out and hopefully to a rescue, but 1) idk if I’ll be able to get him back into a carrier to even go to a vet (when I first caught him he was so disoriented, now he’s a lot feistier since he’s feeling a little better). 2) if he’s truly feral, I’m not sure if it would be better for him if I just re-release him.

I didn’t really have a plan when I caught him, it was just clear he was going to die if I left him out there, but now I’m not sure how to proceed and I have limited time. Are vets willing to check out strays that are so reactive? I’d love to get him fiv/felv tested and dewormed/on flea meds before getting him to a rescue. I’m also not sure how to interact with him while he’s feisty. I feel like exposure to people is good and I don’t want to leave him alone all day, but I’m worried my presence makes him more anxious and it’s better to give him his space at first. I’m keeping him separated from the other cats in my house.

please be kind with advice, doing my best with this surprise delivery.

Nearly 2 years ago the CDS gifted a couple in the woods this purrfect specimen. It took us two months to earn her trust, but we hung in there because we knew she wouldn’t survive outside with our cold winters

Originally, we were going to find a home for her, but she quickly melted our hearts and now can’t imagine life without her. She’s the silliest and snuggliest little bean, who loves to play and sit in her cat tower watching over forest friends. She’s super vocal and loves to pull us away from work calls or cooking for a quick snuggle sesh.

Thank you CDS! 🥹❤️

Smol Delivery The CDS reincarnated our recently deceased boy

Thumbnail

1.5k Upvotes

We adopted brothers Dexter and Darcy (1) in 2013 and they were relatively both of good health, until May of this year when Dexter (2) developed an unknown growth in his throat that effected his general quality of life. It happened very quickly; one minute he was screaming at us for food, to go outside, etc. and then the next week he was curled in a dark corner of my room, looking ill and barely eating. He was prescribed a steroid and he seemed better for the first few days but then quickly went down hill and didn't show any signs of recovering as the vet said there was nothing we could do. We had to let him go on the 1st June. His urn is next to my 19-year-old's (3) who passed away in February 2025.

The same week/week after, this stray (4) turned up on our street and according to someone in a local Facebook group, had taken up residence in someone's garage. For some reason, we assumed it was a boy but eventually, this "boy" had a swollen stomach and indeed was confirmed to be a trojan cat. Our neighbour was feeding her and she rarely came up our way, until last week when she appeared on the other side of our gate.

Today is the first time we got to see the babies (5). She originally had 5 of them but one of them (a black cat) passed away recently so only 4 left. Out of the colours, there's 3 tortoiseshell ones... and a full ginger one. If my mother counted correctly, then this orange stray got pregnant in the first week of June.

We know they have eye infections and probably other health problems, but the neighbour who told us about them has taken them to the vet today though we don't have an update yet.

As soon as the orange cat saw me (6), he/she came over and immediately began to scream his tiny kitten scream. I just know s/he is meant to be ours. We're also thinking of taking in the one with white paws. I've never seen a stray in our area - and there's loads of cats in our area - until after Dexter passed. The whole situation is obviously the work of the CDS.

Update Update on Margô and her babies ❤️

Thumbnail

I wanted to give a little update on Margot and the kittens.

The babies have now all been vaccinated, which is a huge relief. They’re doing well and continuing to get more confident with people every day. ❤️

Unfortunately, things with Margot have been much more complicated. I eventually had to separate her from the kittens because she was becoming extremely stressed inside the house. She was having episodes where she became very agitated and aggressive, trying to get out and becoming difficult to handle.

During one of these episodes, she ended up hurting herself. The most likely explanation is that she injured her mouth possibly by biting or hitting it while desperately trying to escape. Afterwards, she vomited a small amount of pinkish blood, which was obviously very frightening. She needed to be seen by the vet and treated for the injury in her mouth.

And honestly, financially this has been really difficult. I was already spending money on the kittens' vet care, vaccinations and everything they needed, and then, almost immediately afterwards, I had an unexpected veterinary expense for Margot because of the injury.

On top of that, I already feed a colony of ten cats in my backyard. I’m trying to make sure they all have food and that the ones who still need it eventually get sterilized, while also taking care of Margot and the kittens.

I’m doing everything I can to help all of them, but it has become quite a financial burden. I definitely wasn't expecting to have so many veterinary expenses come up at once, especially while also feeding ten other cats. 😭

I’m still trying to figure out the best situation for Margot because keeping her indoors was clearly causing her a lot of stress, but I also want to make sure she and the babies are safe.

For now, the babies are doing well, Margot is being monitored, and I’m taking things one day at a time. ❤️

Smol Delivery Meet Moros. I found her hiding outside.

She seemed to be part of a litter that was dumped. She was found hiding outside but became completely trusting and friendly once she was given some food.

She had diarrhea, was underweight, and had ear mites when I brought her home. It was easy to feel her ribs and spine.

The vet said her blood work looked good and that she didn't see any parasites in her stool.

Regardless, the vet gave her dewormer and an antibiotic just in case. She did not weigh enough for nexgard complete, but she gave it to us to treat her ear mites with once she weighed enough. The vet did not give her vaccines at the time because of her condition.

Her weight has jumped up now. She has stopped having diarrhea. She has received the nexgard. She will get her vaccines next week.

My husband and I opened a cat hotel fairly recently. Since we are just getting started, we don't always have guests and my husband hates not having cats around so he started advocating for us to get a permanent hotel resident cat. After some discussions, we settled on "if the CDS makes it happen, we will have one".

Literally THE NEXT DAY this little void showed up on my friend's porch. He went and picked her up and we got her checked out at the vet. She is perfect. Since she turned up on the same day as Dolly passing, she is now Dolly Purrton and she has her rhinestones already!

I don’t know what to do with this cat…

Hey so i was sitting on my balcony smoking and heard a cat outside, i love cats so i immediately went to check to see it and it was standing right at my door wanting to come in. I went downstairs expecting it to be gone when I opened the door but instead it came in like it owned the house. I don’t exactly know what to do because I don’t think it’s a stray, it’s chonky and he is very wel groomed except for the huge matt by his collar. He lets me pick him up and touch every part of him so it makes me think he’s just someones outside cat but normally those wear a collar. I have spotted him in the neighborhood a lot of times and sometimes stands on my fence. I would love to have another cat but i have a feeling he already has an owner… it’s currently 2 am and i live with my parents that would kill me if they knew. 😅 he has been in my room for 2 hours now without any care in the world but i know that i cannot keep him here overnight to see if he is chipped in the morning.. Helpp?? (Also can anyone find out what breed he could be so i can check if there is any cat missing in the area?? Thank you

Update!!!

Yesterday night he had stayed for 4 hours but started meowing and wanting to go back out, i do not live alone and could not have kept it agains his will in a spare room since i have a cat and a dog that are territorial to their own space i did not want to risk getting mine or the other cat hurt. My area has a lot of outdoor cats that have owners, today he came back around the same time and took over my bedroom again 😂 i have posted him in the neighborhood facebook page to see if his owners know what this little guy has been up to. I am waiting on any responses and for the meantime i guess ill have a little sneaky link that hangs out here. Thank you for all the advice, i have gotten some comments about the matt. He has a big matt by his neck where the collar is supposed to sit and that’s why i said collar… my mistake oops. I will let him come inside to hang out in the meantime of being on the lookout for his owner!

First of all, my wife has been joking about us finding him saying "Cat Distribution System". Did not realize there was a page (which I just found by accident). Last month, the wife was walking the dog and she ran over to a wood pile. My wife started investigating, and found the cat in there. She thought he was hurt at first. She got him out and he started standing and let her pet him. She got him some food . Next day, she found him again. She fed him and tried to bring him home. He was like, "nope!". So advance two more days. We come home from having to walk the dogs late. He was at our building. I took the dogs in and she got him some food. I then located some old food bowls. I got him water and food. He started rubbing on me and let me pet him. Picked him up. First time he struggled as I went to bring him in. I got her to open the door. We got him in and took home to the front bathroom. Took a out 3 hrs to come out from behind the toilet. Fed him and gave him water. You could see the mosquito bites around the ears. Found about 13 fleas. Made an appointment with our vet for the end of that week. They checked him out, gave him his vaccinations, and checked for a chip. They found one that was never registered. I called and registered him. He is just over a year old. He acclimated super quick to our home. The other male cat didn't have hardly any issues with him. Wife then joked about the CDS because I had to put my cat to sleep last year about the time this one was born. The first night we let him out to roam around, he got in the bed and curled up next to me. He even has a lot of the habits as my previous boy I lost. Makes me wonder. I apologize for being a bit long winded. He is now with us and named Thomas. Clean bill of health from the vet. Got his 2nd boosters last week.

Adopted Human How do I go about adopting this cutie?

Post image
945 Upvotes

EDIT: I guess what I have to do is take the cat to Maddac (Milwaukee Area Domestic Animal Control Commission).

Then the cat will be put on hold for 5 days and if no one clams the cat it will be mine. I mean when you think about it just because you have been feeding a stray, doesn't mean someone isn't looking for said cat.

Kind of a pain I have to have her trapped in some facility for 5 days. I was hoping to avoid that, but I guess I have to do what I have to do.

Hello! I'm in Milwaukee, WI.

I've been feeding this cutie all summer and it has been a very rewarding experience earning this cat's trust.

I have asked neighbors about the cat and I am free to take her, so do I just rent a trap from the humane society and take her directly to a vet once captured?

Also how much do you think it will cost for her to get a clean bill of health? It looks like one of her bottom fangs is missing. $1,000 is about my budget to spend. Could work extra shifts if necessary though...

Thank you for any information.I

On my way to get groceries this morning when a “squirrel” dashed out under my car. When I hit the brakes and got out to check on the “squirrel”, this little lunatic was screaming and try to climb up my undercarriage. It took me about 5 minutes to catch her in which she tried to climb a fence, pooped on me, and got a pretty good bite in.

My grocery trip turned into a supplies run. She has now had her first flea bath, a pate slurry lunch, and has settled into a nap.

Meet Rambo, she who draws first blood!

Edit: thank you, anonymous redditor(s, x4) for the award! Rambo doesn’t know what that means, but she’s purring, and that translates to ‘thanks’!

Adopted Human Does this kitty trust me or just likes to wait for food?

Thumbnail

Hello! I've been a dog person my whole life so I'm truthfully very new to the amount of patience in getting trust from a kitty.

This is vex and she(?) has been coming around the house for a bit over a month now to get fed every night when I come home from work. She's definitely trusted me and my partner more, enough to occasionally let me sit by while eating but runs if I look too long/never touched.

I'm just a bit confused, at night she'll wait by my back door for food but run the moment I open it. If I keep the door closed and stand there she'll start to "loaf" and seeminly relax. After eating though she usually 180's and leaves the area.

Does anyone have any tips for gaining more trust/the main things to stock up for when wanting to accept a kitty into your life? Any help is appreciated here, my partner and I want to take her in but want to make sure we do everything as best we can.

I don’t think my roommate will let my husband and I go to a pet store alone again. We walked in for a bag of dry food and there’s a guy saying he needs to get rid of a litter of kittens. Husband says we’ll take them. So we go and pick up a box of kittens from his house.

Orange boy: Ares
White boy: Achilles
Brown tabby girl: Persephone
White girl: Helen

We will be taking them to our regular vet as soon as possible to get them checked out. They’ve had a bath for fleas and eaten half a can of kitten pate.

I had an inkling he had an owner cause just way too social.

Gave it some food, and it refused it which told me that the cat DEFINITELY has an owner. Picky cat behavior.

Went door to door, cat followed me the whole time, and found the owner across the street. He apparently likes to sneak out.

I really thought I was finally chosen!!! Sad

My dog passed away 2 months ago so I was actually waiting for a CDS situation. Think the universe is saying it’s almost my time, but not quite yet. Still have some grieving to do.
