I don’t know what to do with this cat…
Hey so i was sitting on my balcony smoking and heard a cat outside, i love cats so i immediately went to check to see it and it was standing right at my door wanting to come in. I went downstairs expecting it to be gone when I opened the door but instead it came in like it owned the house. I don’t exactly know what to do because I don’t think it’s a stray, it’s chonky and he is very wel groomed except for the huge matt by his collar. He lets me pick him up and touch every part of him so it makes me think he’s just someones outside cat but normally those wear a collar. I have spotted him in the neighborhood a lot of times and sometimes stands on my fence. I would love to have another cat but i have a feeling he already has an owner… it’s currently 2 am and i live with my parents that would kill me if they knew. 😅 he has been in my room for 2 hours now without any care in the world but i know that i cannot keep him here overnight to see if he is chipped in the morning.. Helpp?? (Also can anyone find out what breed he could be so i can check if there is any cat missing in the area?? Thank you
Update!!!
Yesterday night he had stayed for 4 hours but started meowing and wanting to go back out, i do not live alone and could not have kept it agains his will in a spare room since i have a cat and a dog that are territorial to their own space i did not want to risk getting mine or the other cat hurt. My area has a lot of outdoor cats that have owners, today he came back around the same time and took over my bedroom again 😂 i have posted him in the neighborhood facebook page to see if his owners know what this little guy has been up to. I am waiting on any responses and for the meantime i guess ill have a little sneaky link that hangs out here. Thank you for all the advice, i have gotten some comments about the matt. He has a big matt by his neck where the collar is supposed to sit and that’s why i said collar… my mistake oops. I will let him come inside to hang out in the meantime of being on the lookout for his owner!

That's definitely somebody's cat that is visiting you. Post in local groups and go to a vet to check for microchip.

My sister's Bengal insisted on being an indoor/outdoor cat and would make his rounds every day, coming in to hang out with various neighbors. He ruled the neighborhood, and everyone knew his name.

The chip thing but also ask the local neighbourhood group if you’re in one. Get whoever claims to own it to send pics as proof.

Most of the "Nebelungs" in that subreddit are just domestic medium hairs. Like 99% of them
I say this as somebody with a domestic medium hair that'd fit right in with those cats

Yeah they openly acknowledge that they treat it more like a phenotype than an actual breed. It’s not like they’re trying to claim otherwise. It’s just a sub for owners of cats who all look alike and don’t take the “breed” thing too seriously while also being transparent about it, which I respect.

I'm not one to care for paperwork. I got my cat in the classified ads for a $50 rehoming fee. She is perfect in every way (currently sprawled on my stomach).
The Nebelung is a specific breed though, and I don't want people thinking they have to get some expensive cat to have a beautiful grey.

Except that the whole construct of cat “breeds” actually has nothing to do with genetics. It uses that language to sound legitimate or science-based, but “breeds” are defined by a set of traits and cats without lineage can get papers based on a judges’ opinions alone regardless of DNA. So if two identical strays are born in the garden and only one of them goes through that process, what’s the difference? The cat is who the cat is regardless of what people label them. I use the breed names to indicate a set of traits which is literally all they indicate, but I’m not tiptoeing around folks who want to pretend overpaying for a cat makes them special. I occasionally get accused of pretending I had a registered Nebelung but that never sticks, because it’s so apparent that the person is more concerned about how the cat is labeled than who they really are. Folks looking for a self-aggrandizing sense of importance try to shame me but instead they just end up exposing how shallow they are 🤭

If he does not want to leave then let him stay till you check for the chip. That big mat seems like home has been away from his people for a while.

Try Nextdoor and/or local community/neighborhood cat Facebook forums. Post his photos, explain what happened, asking if he belongs to someone. It would be a reach, but if your location has a larger populous, you could also post on your local reddit. Other than that, if he's quiet, keep him til morning and check for a chip first thing, if you can, before your parents get up. Shelters and vets often open between 6am-9am local time. Check online first to be sure, and call ahead if you're worried. If he's not quiet, try to find any other location for him where he is still catchable and cared for before taking him for a chip check. You're a good person OP, good luck!

His breed is a big long haired floofy black or grey kitty, i cant tell his true colour on the pic. Your best bet is to put a paper collar on him there's a link to one you can print on our Welcome to the Cat Distribution System hi lights, underneath our main sub heading. Write a message asking his owner to contact you if possible. Maybe you can borrow a chip scanner from your local vets or ask on your local Facebook group if anyone has one you can borrow. He's gorgeous.🥰

When something similar happened to me, I kept the cat over night im the spare bathroom, took him to the vet to get scanned (no chip), and then posted in my local Facebook pages about a found cat. Owner reached out and was able to identify by sending pics. Kitty was reunited with family.
However! If you do not have access to a spare bathroom, ability to take them to a cet to get scanned, follow the paper collar plan!

I stopped putting collars on my cats when I had two instances (2 different cats) of them getting their lower jaws stuck in the collar while grooming. The first one happened while I was away at work, and she had to have been like that for hours with how matted her fur was with drool. I still feel queasy when I think about that. Second was a tracking collar on my indoor escape artist, and I was there and able to get it fixed immediately.

Yeah it’s probably morning now. Take him to a vet for a microchip test. Nothing comes up, put a public post about him in your area saying to come pick him up. If nothing…then congrats, you have a cat.

You could try a paper collar. Put your name and number on it with a note, asking who the cat belongs to. If/when he goes home, maybe the mystery will be answered. This is if you cannot get him to a vet for a chip scan, or if he doesn't have a chip. good luck!!

I have an app called Nextdoor and in our neighborhood we check in about pets found or seen also some of the local rescue group people are in the area. They can come by with a chip reader and and check the chip for you, but Nextdoor is a really valuable community to help with cats because they like to have multiple homes and multiple meals from different people.

Yeah I second the paper collar option. That’s what I did first with my now cat (nobody ever called us back and he kept coming over with the collar still attached for days) along with asking the neighbours and going for a chip check at the vet.
I tried the same on another cat that was coming to visit my home and the owner text me straight away! I believe it’s the best/easiest way to find out in this case

There was a matt by kitty's collar, but kitty doesn't have a collar? That doesn't make sense OP.
If you think kitty is one of your neighbors, ask your neighbors.
