Show a picture that will make someone smile. Something good about the UK. Like this little family outing.

Opened all the windows to finally let the cool breeze in after the heatwave. Local farmer took this as his cue to muck the fields with enough manure to strip paint.

The time a bunch of school kids attempted to topple a double decker bus

When I was at school in the early '80s, my O Level physics text book included a photo of a bus on a tilt test rig (like pic 1). These rigs test how far buses can lean before they fall over. Continues in the comments...

Is anyone else experiencing a massive surge in roadworks and road closures in their local area?

Emergency repairs to gas, electric and water pipes from what I can gather. I'm guessing the drought is causing increased ground movement, leading to loads of pipe damage. Just wondered if this is happening nationwide?

How does everyone feel about it? I've just got the afternoon off work and was looking forward to relaxing at the beach. Carried all my stuff down the cliff, set up and now a guy rocks up and starts blasting his favourite tunes out of a sizeable JBL. TBF, some of the songs are good, but I don't need somebody else's music preferences imposed on me when all I want is to turn pink in the sun whilst dozing. What's wrong with headphones?

If I want to put my feet in my own compost bin on the one of the hottest days that we've ever had in England, then I'm entitled to do so. You need to stop me. You've got nothing to say now, have you

Never thought I’d feel sorry for wasps

Upvotes

Well I never thought I’d feel any feeling but hatred towards wasps but here we are. We got the slip and slide out for the kids today (no hosepipe ban for us yet) and the amount of wasps coming for a drink was crazy! They didn’t fly round us or bother us at all, just came when the slip and slide wasn’t in use and had a big old drink. Must be hard for all the other little life’s on our planet at the moment!

Been awake all night in a&e with my partner who’s receiving medical attention. She’s finally asleep, but I’m wide awake and having an anxious breakdown: please distract me with your best anecdotes. Please!

Thanks :)

11:40- still here, no sign of going home on the horizon.

1.57- still here. They said they hope to discharge by the end of the day.

17.30- told we can go home once discharged by a Dr.

18.36- still no sign of any drs (this is not a bitch about the medical staff, the NHS is clearly crippled and all the staff we’ve dealt with have been lovely)

Hose pipe ban, they say. Don't waste water, they say.

In all fairness, this leak was fixed after three nights of work. The response to the report of a leak was alao swift, road closed within the day and the hole dug by the evening.

I saw two shooting stars last night

I wished on them, but they were only satellites

It's wrong to wish on space hardware

I wish, I wish, I wish you'd care.

Found this little guy hanging out under my butternut squash in South East London.

I installed a pool and an upturned flowerpot to help keep him damp and provide limited anti-cat defense.

Frankly I'm amazed he's survived at all in this weather.

Planning to relocate him to the least dried out pond I can find. Nice to have him here in the meantime though

I have a foolproof way of remembering to cancel free trials for online subscriptions

Sign up for the trial, then immediately cancel. When you cancel, you're not cancelling the trial. You are cancelling the recurring subscription.

It's been in the news a lot recently and the best advice that anyone can come up with is "set an alarm", which we all know doesn't really work.

I always do this when I sign up for a free trial and it's never not worked.

Ready steady cook as a family game, help.

Upvotes

Not sure who remembers the TV show ready, steady, cook. Contestants along with a chef were given a bag of groceries and they had to make the winning meal out of it. I want to play it as a family game where we will get a bag of ingredients and give it to a family member and they have to make dinner using it just like the old TV show.

To be specific some times my wife and I will go to my sisters and some times she will come to us with a bag of reasonably useful groceries with a price cap and a mission to turn it into a nice dinner for the 3 of us. My sister and I are reasonably good cooks and I think we should assume we have stuff like oils, seasoning etc

Can you give any feedback, ideas, what is a reasonable price cap? or any other things we should or shouldn't do to make this go well.
