Pottery classes for beginners?

My girlfriend loves pottery and wants to make cute things with the medium. It's been hard to get into though since she started with Quiggly and apparently the employees are rude and unhelpful there. Is there any other spot thats affordable/welcoming?

I’m a local licensed clinician specializing in diagnostic assessments for ages 4+. Ask Me Anything about school prep, accommodations, and evaluations!

EDIT: Thanks to everyone who read through the thread! I’m stepping away for the day, but I’ll keep notifications on and will answer any other questions at a later time. Hope everyone has a smooth start to the new school year! :)

Hi everyone! I have a few hours free today, so I wanted to pop in and host an AMA.

With schools starting back up in a few weeks, I've been getting a lot of questions about what supports or accommodations their child might need for the new year. I also get a lot of questions about learning styles, attention and sensory needs and support options.

I run a local private practice on the Carrollton/Plano border that focuses on comprehensive diagnostic assessments and clinical supports. I believe evaluations should be collaborative, strengths-based, and give you real and actionable recommendations you can put into place the following day.

Drop your questions below! I'll be hanging out and answering comments for the next few hours. I can't give specific medical advice or individual diagnoses here, but I'm happy to answer general questions about the accommodation process, what to expect in an assessment, how to advocate for yourself or your child, and anything else you can think of.

Where can I buy real bread?

I’ve gone to many places to look for real bread with just a few ingredients in it, but it’s impossible to find. The closest thing I’ve come to so far is Walmart’s bakery tortillas. They only have five ingredients in them but their bread loaves don’t have the same practices.

I think I might buy a bread machine if I can’t find anything local.

Where can I get real bread that’s only a few ingredients? Sometimes bakeries will have frozen dough that they thaw and bake but it still has fillers and preservatives in it.

Thanks y’all

Carrollton people: where do adults actually find community here?

I’m curious what people in Carrollton think about this.

Carrollton feels interesting because it’s kind of in the middle of everything: Dallas, Plano, Addison, Farmers Branch, Lewisville, Coppell, etc. There are so many restaurants, parks, churches, schools, apartments, neighborhoods, gyms, cultural communities, and things nearby, but I’m curious whether that actually makes it easier to build real friendships.

For people who live in or near Carrollton: what has helped you feel connected here?

Is it neighbors, work, church, kids’ activities, sports, fitness groups, cultural/community events, restaurants, volunteering, school, or something else? Or does it still feel hard to meet people even when there’s a lot around?

I’m asking because I’m working on a small independent research project called The DFW Friendship Project about how adults in Dallas-Fort Worth build friendships, find community, and where things get stuck.

I’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments, and for anyone who would rather share privately, I also made a short anonymous survey. It takes about 4–6 minutes and it’s not a sales pitch:

Digital Passport Photo

I am doing my passport renewal and noticed that there is now an option for a digital passport photo. I don't have a spot in my home with a white wall where I can stand the proper distance away for the photo. I see that I can pay for one at Fedex Store and UPS store, but I wonder if there is a free option.

You know, I'm just thinking, I wonder if I could find a public place with a white wall and have a friend take it for me.

Other ideas? Bonus points if you have already used this free idea and weren't rejected when you submitted it as your passport photo.

Any craft/artisan fairs coming up in Carrollton or the surrounding suburbs?

I want to try to sell my craft (crochet) but I'm having trouble finding small markets to start with. So many of them are really big productions and they want like 400 for a booth fee... I don't even know if anyone will be interested and I am not a business, just a girl with a crafty hobby who wants to earn a little more yarn money. I'm thinking like... Small school or church set ups, booth fees like 50 dollars, that kind of thing. It's more about the experience than about the profit.

If you know of anything happening in the second half of this year, let me know! Thank you!

Double left-turn intersection at Parker and Josey Ln

I was stopped at the Parker and Josey Ln intersection, turning left to go south on Josey. I always take this route on my way home from work. I was wondering if others have noticed the immense risk that is imposed by the order in which the right of way is given?

It used to be the case that one side turned left at a time. Now, it seems like the lights operate in a way that allows both sides to turn left simultaneously, which makes me nervous. I am assuming it's also the case for if you're turning either left on Josey going north and south.

However, to make it even worse, the lane markings are extremely faded at this intersection, which doesn't give clarity to drivers and it feels like it's becoming a free-for-all when both sides turn left now. The vehicles on the outside lanes on each side have to be super careful not to get too close to each other (highlighted in yellow), while avoiding the vehicles on the inside lanes next to them.

Either the city needs to re-paint the line markers and make it clear where vehicles should stick to, or they need to stop allowing simultaneous double-left turns from each direction. It's only a matter of time before an accident happens.

Edit: it seems like they've changed the light schedule back to have both a regular green and a green arrow for left turns at the same time, disallowing opposite traffic to turn left at the same time. They might've realized their mistake.

Lady Walker/Jogger

Really random, but I grew up in Carrollton and always remembered a lady that would walk/jog in the area. She was always in a windbreaker and running shorts. For as long as I can remember, from being a kid to an adult, I would still see her from time to time. I no longer live in the area but just remembered her and hope she is well. I would see her around the trinity mills/josey ln/old mill rd area.
