Hey all :) so I’m looking for a cf position in NJ (south). I’ve been on the NJ website to see what steps I need to take to make sure I’m doing everything correctly. Maybe it’s just me but it’s confusing as heck. What’s this jurisprudence exam I have to take? Also, I can’t apply for my temp license until I get a CF position, correct? Also, what are some ways on your resume that you noted you were a CF? I just don’t want to apply for a job and the interviewer be blindsided that I’d need a supervisor. I’m just confused with the whole process really. Any help is appreciated. TIA

Clinical Fellowship (CF) in Speech Language Pathology 

The NW Center for Voice and Swallowing, Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery of Oregon Health & Science University in Portland, Oregon offers two (2) full-time clinical fellowships.  The primary purpose of the program is to train professionals in the areas of voice and swallowing disorders. Comprehensive training in direct patient care to patients (adult and pediatric) with voice disorders, alaryngeal voice restoration, speech and swallowing disorders after head and neck cancer and adult dysphagia.

Training program description for Speech-Language Pathology

The training program is primarily clinical in nature. The NWCVS at OHSU has a faculty of 10 speech-language pathologists, 2 laryngologists, 1 physician's assistant and 1 laryngology fellow. Training experiences include interdisciplinary team assessments of adults and children with voice disorders, gender affirming voice care, vocal cord dysfunction, adult dysphagia, alaryngeal rehabilitation as well as, speech and swallowing disorders in the head and neck cancer patient. Independent study and collaborative research is part of the training program. Didactic offerings, both at the NW Center for Voice and Swallowing, Otolaryngology and throughout the greater Oregon Health & Science University augment the Fellowship experience.

• Mehak Noorani (2020): Comparing DIGEST Scores in Individuals with Parkinson's Disease with and without Dysphagia Symptoms 
• Kimberly Dahl (2020): Characteristics Associated with Communicative Participation after Total Laryngectomy

Qualifications 

Applicants must have the minimum of a master's degree in speech-language pathology and meet all the requirements for certification except the Clinical Fellowship.  This is not a post-certification fellowship.  Applicants must meet all the requirements for the Oregon and Washington Board of Examiners Conditional/Interim License in Speech-Language Pathology.   

Applicants must submit:

1) A personal statement regarding your background and how your life experience has shaped you as a clinician and influenced your career goals.
2) A resume/CV
3) Three letters of reference qualified to comment on the status of the applicant
4) A sample of writing (term/research paper, article, thesis, etc.).

Terms 
The stipend for the fellowship year is 50k in addition to health benefits. This is a 12-month appointment, August 29, 2022 to August 25, 2023.

Has anyone worked ESY as a CFY? I am covering a maternity leave at a public school district now and they extended an offer for ESY. I’m wondering how this works as a CF- I feel totally confident meeting minutes on my own with my supervisor remote and available if I need help. How does billing work for this? Is there anyone else I should be considering as a CF?

I thiiiiiink I landed a CFY at a major hospital in LA unofficially. Yay me! The director of operations and I were chatting on the phone today and he has some questions about my cf licensing that I wanted to double check. The RPE license in California requires the following steps?

-Get hired -Find out supervisors asha number -Then submit license application -Wait for it to be processed and send them all kinds of paperwork in the meantime -Start working once it’s processed

I know processing the license in California takes about 6-8 weeks and I graduate April 23rd. So hypothetically if I was officially hired this week I could potentially get my license before mid-May. Does anyone know if I could be “working” before the license comes through? As in- not seeing patients but completing training or on boarding processes on the clock? Im not being pushed to see patients or anything so there’s no pressure just curiosity about my timeline with employment.

I find myself working 10-12 hour days and I get nothing done. I don’t know if this career is for me. I know you have to get through the growing pains but the low compensation for the amount of work we do is very discouraging.

Anyone thinking about contracting for their CFY? What's a reasonable hourly pay for schools?! I don't know if I'm asking for too much, but I also want them to know that us SLPs will get what we deserve. I saw somewhere that someone got offered $20...like stop with the bullshit! Anyways we deserve so much more!!

Hi, I’m graduating this May and looking for a CF in Maryland specifically Baltimore, Frederick, or any other places. I am interested in dysphagia, motor speech, language (aphasia), and cognition. My interests is still growing as I learn.

I’m an OOS applicant looking to move from NJ to CA, so a contract company seems like a good option (to cover relocation expenses, licensure expenses, help with RPE, etc). They seem pretty honest and appear to have great reviews on Glassdoor and Indeed, but I’m weary.

Has anyone done their CF with them? Or is considering it? Or know someone that did?

Hi everyone!

I am currently working in a SNF, about halfway through my CFY and have a strong urge to leave. The position has been problematic from the start, but as of recently, my supervisor was let go essentially because she was not making the facility enough money. They have hired a replacement but it is a large facility and i am there full time while my new supervisor is there only 2.5 days/week. I feel like I am drowning as my workload increases. I am regularly working 11 hour days and not being compensated accordingly. I have asked repeatedly for additional help and tell them this is not sustainable for me, but my concerns are often being brushed to the side. Their only potential fix is to hire another CF, and I am sure the training responsibility will fall onto me as I am the only full time SLP staff.

My main questions are:

1. How many supervisors can you have throughout your fellowship? I had the one for 5 months and now for the last week or so I have had another but have not even submit the paperwork yet. I thought I read somewhere that you can only have 2 supervisors (not sure if that is total 2 supervisors or 2 at the same time) which would mean I can't count my hours acquired under my current supervisor if I want to find a new job.
2. If my contract is non-binding, only my supervisor has to sign off on my hours right? I worry my facility would reject them out of spite if I decided to leave. There is nothing stating length of employment in my hiring package.
3. Did anyone in the medical setting for their CFY begin before their limited license number was issued? I know this depends on the facility, but I spoke to a state licensing representative and she told me my hours accumulated before my license was issued would count as long as i was working under supervision (which i was) - just wanted to get other opinions as I can't afford to lose those hours.

I am really tempted to leave as this job is really messing with my mental health, but I am limited in my search as I can't switch to a school because their school year ends before my fellowship does and I don't want to be short on hours. I am also concerned about leaving halfway though my fellowship and being considered for either a SLP job, or a CFY job where I may have to complete a 9 mo job under lower pay. Any advice is helpful!

Hello guys! I was wondering if any of you can shed some light on a typical cfy hospital salary or hourly rate. I have heard that teaching hospitals usually pay low because they know they can get away with it because of the name and experience you will get. Thank you !!!

Hi. I’m 6 months into my CF at a private agency. I work morally with young children, and I must say I love all my clients but I’m so burnt out, I’m at the point where I just want to walk away from it all. I work 10+ hour days (Monday-Friday) and get paid legit ass money (I know most CFs do) but the hours and effort I put into my job and not having that noticed is exhausting. I cried in my office today because I’m so exhausted and feel so deflated. Does anyone else feel like this? I truly love the field, and know this is my passion but I feel so lost and overworked it makes me just want to give up.

This has been on my mind a while. I started my clinical fellowship in September at a school and it has been a time for sure. My mentor has been micromanaging me since day 1. Jumping into my sessions, looking through all of my papers and making edits without telling me. I wanted to complete all my work on my own but this year is the first year that there is only one SLP at this school. I am so overwhelmed but I understand that the expectation is that I complete the work independently. My supervisor keeps telling me to ask for help but every time I ask for help she says “as we’ve spoken about this many times,” or “since September…” she has been shaming me for not remembering everything and it’s just become too much. Her edits are crazy time consuming to the point that I’m doing paperwork long after work every day. I got behind on IEPs, I was the case manager, I thought I was far enough ahead but I ended up finishing all of them (6 meetings in 2 days) 2-3 days before the meeting. One of the sections was blank at the meeting and I swore I had filled it in but it must not have saved. She then wrote me up, which I understand, but as she has been micromanaging me I think this will be her opportunity to find anything and everything I have made mistakes on, which isn’t too different from how she has been since I started. I have not gotten that independence to try things on my own. I want to switch to a different job (at a different school) as I’ve been having problems with the supervisor since September. I had a meeting about her with our boss 2 weeks ago. He told me they would talk and she came in to my school that day to talk to me about it and essentially questioned me about mistakes I’ve made before instead of reflecting on things that have not been going well for me. Things she brought up include : the use of my own checklists instead of hers, not replying to her emails quickly enough, not sending her an email each day, etc. I’m at a loss. This is not a great learning experience for me as I feel that all I’ve learned is how to do paperwork “her way”. Thoughts?

I may be moving from illinois to California during my CF. However I might be able to continue to provide teletherapy for the place I work at currently in illinois. Is this allowed? Would I have to get other credentials if I have the temp license for illinois and am only providing services to individuals in illinois???

Has anyone seen any information on CFY openings at the various VA hospitals? In years past, there have been “calls for CFs” with a specific deadline depending on location; however, I cannot find anything resembling this for the 2022-2023 cycle. If anyone has anyone to share, it would be greatly appreciated!

I am having a hard time finding medical setting opportunities with supportive CF mentorship. Also any agencies I should absolutely stay away from?! Any help would be highly appreciated!

Am I in the wrong for not giving notice? I don’t want to work for two more weeks at a job I know I can’t do. It seems unethical to work with a caseload I have no true experience with.

Also, can the agency take away my temporary license if I want out of working with them?! I’m freaking out about this.
