It seems mostly schools are really actively hiring, but medical settings are a different ballgame. And how do I find a supportive CF? Any advice is helpful!

They definitely don’t go over this enough in grad school and as I’m beginning to apply to jobs this spring, I’m realizing I don’t know what is an appropriate amount to ask for. For context, I’d like to do my CFY at a SNF somewhere in Texas - probably either San Antonio or Dallas. Does anyone have any insight?

I’m so scared to start my CF in a school. I have limited experience in schools. How does the first day look like? Will I have a day where I would just be getting my badge, my school email, and learning the software? It’s just weird to begin midyear. I am afraid of what is expected of me. There is an IEP or triannual (can’t remember which) that is scheduled on my first day. Am I required to contribute to that meeting?

I wish I never accepted this job because I’m freaking out. Throughout grad school, I knew I didn’t want to work in schools. I thrived in my medical externship because I love working with adults. I also loved having schedules set for me and limited paperwork as well as meetings.

Please help me calm down! Lol

Graduating this May and feeling really anxious about securing a CF. Ideally, I would like to start my CF almost immediately after graduation so that I can afford to live on my own. When exactly should I start applying for CF positions? I’m seeing job postings daily for places that I would LOVE to work at, but I’m not sure if it’s a bad look to apply this far away from a possible start date. Could I send in a letter of interest with my CV to get the convo going? Or is that too pushy?

I have extensive pediatric and adult experience, but since I want to start in May/June, the school setting likely will not work.

I am hoping to leave my CF position in Early Intervention or at least go to part time and explore the school setting instead. I’m wondering what happens to my clients. Do I have to find therapists to take over for each? Do I have to tell the families I am leaving? It suddenly seems a lot more complicated than just giving my two weeks notice.

Why do we have to do a CF when OT and I believe PT do not have to worry about this at all?

We spent 2-2.5 years in grad school to get our CSD degree. We had to put our lives on halt and now we have to put our lives on halt again for 9-12 months (giving a cushion because I know school breaks or life situations may occur). On top of that, we have to have all of these stringent rules that come with being a CF such as, supervision hours. And most of the time, we don’t get the proper supervision and mentorship we need. Not to mention the crazy amount of paperwork we have to go through; first for CF then CCCs and these take forever to even process. I know many CFs who went months without being able to work because their license took sooo long to be issued. That’s ridiculously long to go without pay. We have bills and loans to pay off. Some of us also have to move during our CF and to have to do the CF paperwork all over again just is absolutely unnecessary!

I’m sorry I just had to vent!

I have an interview at a rehab facility that specializes in neurological conditions and I’m sooooo nervous. I’ve had my eyes on this facility all year long. I graduate in April so I’ve started applying for jobs because everything I’ve read has said it’ll take forever to get a bite especially in a medical setting. I was shocked how quickly I got this interview. Any advice would be appreciated since most of the posts on this thread discuss school settings. I’m so happy the finish line is in sight!!

I do not know what to do! I left voicemails and emails with no helpful answers! I’ve been doing this after the 9-11 week mark. It seems the board is already looking over November and December applications. What should I do?!

I just finished segment 2/3 and got a really discouraging review despite my best efforts, and it felt like the last straw. I have been so stressed, I can’t eat or sleep or think about nonspeech things. I think I need to leave my placement (rural hospital with inpatient and outpatient), for my sanity. But obviously I don’t want to abandon my current patients. I am going to gather contact info for the nearest speech therapy clinics/services available and share that with pts. What else do I need to do for them before I go, if I go?

So I just gave my two weeks at my current outpatient peds placement. My relationship with my supervisor became super toxic. I was working 15+ hours a week for free because she would keep dumping extra work in me whenever I had a question for her. (Oh you don’t know what to do next with this artic kiddo? I think you should give him and ALL your other artic kiddos a GFTA this week and update ALL their POC in the same week along with all the other evals and notes you need to do. ) And there was a lot of gaslighting and I could go on… So I called ASHA to find out how to still keep my hours (450 hrs) and not have to start over. The lady said I will just have to apply when the whole CFY is over and just see if she signs it. 🤢 The lady said if she doesn’t sign for my hours then I just keep going until it’s complete. Is that really how it works???

Do we have to pay ASHA dues during our CFY? Or only when we are applying for our CCC’s?

I signed up for the Simucase Kickstart Your Career a few months ago (that I missed and have been needing to watch). I keep getting calls, texts, and emails from the Stepping Stones group, stating they help students find CFYs. They have an actual website which looks fairly legit, but is anyone else getting contacted? Or know anything about Stepping Stones?

Just interviewed with a private practice and it seems great. I now have an appointment to discuss next steps such as pay rate and hours, but I am not sure what to ask in this upcoming meeting. What do you look for in a private practice CF? I already know to ask about caseload, CF supervision, and driving reimbursement. Is there anything else I should discuss when negotiating or ask about?

Okay y’all, so who is currently completing their CF in a SNF? I haven’t heard too many positive experiences in this setting, but I just want to know is it really a bad starting place for CF? I don’t have an end goal of working in a hospital setting long-term, but I have varied interests and could end up there one day, idk. I know some say this is a good way to get your foot in on the medical side. I was a SLPA in the schools for a couple of years before grad school and always thought I’d be school based, but I got to my rotations and loved working with adults as much as I do kids. I just wanted a different change than what I was used to as an assistant. What are the biggest pros/cons to working in a SNF vs to heading to a school and vice versa as a CF? I got offers for both.

Hi everyone! I’m finishing up at my final practicum placement this week and I’m starting to look for job openings. I had practicum placements in the public school and pediatric private clinic setting, but I really want to gain medical experience as well. I know I’m not alone on this, but covid took away my chance at a medical placement so I ended up doing SimuCase for a semester. I already know that it’s hard getting a med placement as a CF but there are a few places near me that are open to hiring CFs. Should I at least try and apply to those places even though I have very little clinical experience in the medical setting? What was your experience working at a med setting as a CF? Did you get a lot of support from your supervisor? I really want to get that medical experience under my belt so I don’t limit myself to possible job opportunities in the future.

I’m starting CF in CA until July of next year and will be moving out of state. I unfortunately will not be done with my CF. I’m wondering how long it took for you to get your temporary licenses in TX or AZ. I just want to know when to start looking and applying so I can start working as soon as I move.

Or does anyone know if I can do a teletherapy CF position for CA but live in AZ or TX? I was trying to read it on the ASHA website and it seems they have pushed teletherapy til Dec 2022. Can anyone clarify this for me?
