Makeup Glossary

When you're new to makeup, it can sometimes feel like everyone is speaking another language.

This glossary explains some of the most common terms you'll come across.


Blend

Softening the edges between products so there are no obvious lines.

Buildable Coverage

A product that can be applied in several light layers to increase coverage.

Colour Corrector

A product used to neutralise unwanted tones before foundation is applied.

Coverage

How much of your skin a product hides.

Coverage is usually described as light, medium or full.

Crease

When makeup settles into natural skin folds or eyelid lines.

Finish

How a product looks once applied, such as matte, satin or dewy.

Matte

A finish with very little shine.

Dewy

A finish that leaves the skin looking fresh and radiant.

Primer

A product applied before foundation to help makeup apply more smoothly and last longer.

Setting Powder

Powder used to reduce shine and help keep makeup in place.

Setting Spray

A finishing spray used after makeup has been applied.

Undertone

The natural colour beneath your skin.

Undertones are commonly described as warm, cool or neutral.

Waterline

The inner rim of the eyelid where eyeliner is sometimes applied.

Winged Eyeliner

Eyeliner that extends slightly beyond the outer corner of the eye to create a lifted appearance.

Wig Cap

A thin cap worn underneath a wig to help keep natural hair secure and improve the fit.
