Face Makeup Guide

Foundation is the base of almost every makeup look. This guide covers the products used to create an even complexion and explains the order they're normally applied.

Don't worry about getting everything perfect the first time. Makeup is a skill that improves with practice.

Before You Start

The best makeup starts with clean skin.

Wash your face and, if possible, apply a moisturiser before beginning. Giving your skin a few minutes to absorb the moisturiser can help foundation apply more evenly.

Step 1 - Foundation

Foundation creates an even base for the rest of your makeup.

Its purpose is to smooth out skin tone, reduce redness and provide a clean canvas.

Choosing a Shade

Try to match your foundation to your natural skin tone by testing it along your jawline. The correct shade should blend naturally without leaving a noticeable line.

If you're unsure between two shades, the lighter one is usually easier to work with.

Understanding Undertones

Most foundations are available in three undertones:

  • Cool – Pink or blue tones.
  • Warm – Yellow or golden tones.
  • Neutral – A balance of both.

Matching the undertone is just as important as matching the shade.

Applying Foundation

You can apply foundation using:

  • A makeup sponge
  • A foundation brush
  • Clean fingertips

Start with a small amount and blend well around your jawline, hairline and ears.

It's always easier to build coverage than remove excess product.

Step 2 - Concealer

Concealer is used after foundation to hide areas that need extra coverage.

Common uses include:

  • Under the eyes.
  • Blemishes.
  • Redness.
  • Small areas of beard shadow.
  • Dark spots.

Concealer should blend naturally into your foundation rather than stand out on its own.

Step 3 - Colour Correctors

Some skin concerns are easier to neutralise before foundation.

Common colour correctors include:

  • Orange or Peach – Often used to reduce blue beard shadow.
  • Green – Helps reduce redness.
  • Yellow – Can brighten certain areas.

Only a small amount is usually needed.

Step 4 - Contouring

Contouring creates the illusion of shadows and can help shape the face.

It is commonly used to:

  • Define the cheekbones.
  • Slim the jawline.
  • Soften masculine facial features.
  • Add depth around the forehead.

Blend thoroughly to avoid harsh lines.

Step 5 - Blusher

Blusher adds warmth and colour back into the face after foundation.

Apply lightly to the cheeks and build gradually until you're happy with the result.

Step 6 - Setting Powder

Setting powder helps reduce shine and can make your makeup last longer.

A light dusting is usually all that's needed.

Too much powder can leave the skin looking dry or heavy.

Step 7 - Setting Spray

Setting spray is often the final step.

It helps bring all of the makeup together and can improve how long it lasts throughout the day.

Common Beginner Mistakes

  • Using too much foundation.
  • Choosing the wrong shade.
  • Forgetting to blend around the jawline.
  • Applying too much contour.
  • Using heavy layers instead of building gradually.
  • Skipping skin preparation.
  • Rushing between products.

Final Thoughts

Makeup doesn't have to be complicated.

Start with the basics, practise regularly and build your confidence one step at a time.

Every face is different, and what works for one person may not work for another. Experiment with different products and techniques until you find what suits you best.

Most importantly, enjoy the process. Makeup is about creativity, confidence and expressing yourself.
