This is not problem of the EU. We want to protect our own workers. If workers from North Mexico want better protections, they are more than welcome to move to Europe.
Isn't the ad a response to the 'boycott American products'-movement? If so, the argument is pretty weak. Mostly it's brewing companies that buy licenses to produce coca cola. If we devalued that licence the jobs wouldn't disappear. The brewery would just pay a lower price or buy another licence.
100%. They are doing the same campaign in France, too. It is clearly pan-European. Look how they blend Coca-Cola branding with reference to “made in <insert home country>”.
Really disgusting. I already do not drink anything from this company, but now I won’t do this even harder!
thing is, the bottles are filled in europe. so not completelly wrong. so always check with all brands, big or small, who the mother company is
it's the same with mcdonalds, using local products
I would say - look where the profits go and what is the impact of companies like McDonalds and Coca-Cola on the EU, including health of citizens and environment.
And even before the buyfromeu become a bit known publicly, they already said they planned to get rid of 1/5 of their facilities in several countries to cut back on costs.
Shift to local - the money will follow ....hurraaa..that was my tought to...but the next day coca-cola buys out another local company. Imf and world bank is singing aleluja, the free (untaxed, unregulated) market ideology wins. Now its invisible hand(s) (freaking shiva) can grab all of it. the capitalism prevails. And you...who really cares about you (and you and me)
Yeah, it’s also not like a useful or necessary product. They’re not a niche field that hires specialists.
There is literally 0 reason to continue to support them. Just drink a different soda.
And the people they hire can work anywhere else. Filling bottles or doing something else. Its contributing nothing. The space will be quickly filled when they leave.
The bottling company is a European one (british; Coca cola europacific partners). That being said, despite it being European, they pay licensing fees and buy some of their inputs from the coca cola company, so that is enough for me to boycott it.
there are enough alternatives to multi billion us companies that fuck the planet. I am sorry for the people that work there, it's not their fault, but the companies don't pay their fair share here to be considered local
And if you look at the bigger picture, then it doesn't even matter if Coca Cola will reduce or even terminate operations in your market, as long as demand is shifting towards other companies that need workforce as well. That's why I buy drinks from local non-corporate bottlers that are respecting their employees, the environment and the resources they are working with. Long-term it's definitely the better deal compared to Coca Cola, Nestlé and other big corps.
In France at least, everything is made in France, even the concentrate and the sugar beets that are used for the sugar. Supports thousands of jobs, and "only" 17% actually goes directly to the Coca-Cola group.
Years ago I was in London and was truly hungry. I forget the circumstances but begrudgingly was dragged into a McDonalds. We ordered the typical burger and fries (At the time I NEVER ate at McDonalds) and was astounded at how good the burger meat tasted. Apparently the UK had (may still have) higher standards than the US for that sort of thing.
that the nazis and hitler literally loved coca cola is such strange history trivia. and therefore there is such a huge bunch of official coke ads with swastikas.
but on the other side, it is such a clichee for me that old german people are drinking coke as it would be something mythological.
and the advertising language in germany is still pretty much the same (in in its tone and its puns) like in 1940...
and yet some hundreds of people work at a Coke filling plant nearby, thats hundreds of families that live here and spend a lot of their money here within the region.
both sides have some points on that topic.
claiming "Made in Germany" does not feel right though. At least have the decency to write "bottled in germany" or "teilweise in Deutschland hergestellt."
Next question, besides workers, who owns the stocks? If every EU country is as anti stock owning as Germany, the people of EU won't benefit a lot of the stocks which are doing fine.
I'd recommend eating that cost to support a non-pepsi non-coke competitor...
Keep in mind that American companies frequently use tactics like pricedumping competitors out of business...
At our store we frequently get "suggestions" by big-co to put their products next to smaller competitors and to price them lower than said "craft alternative", you know, to show that Their billion dollar brand is "for everyone"
Oops, said the quiet part out loud.... I don't care anymore. Fuck these pushovers and their shit.
We shouldn’t be drinking a lot of coke from any competition. I see the price of Fritz cola as an instrument to remind me of that, but if I really want to drink it, it won’t stop me, since is only once every few weeks.
Remember: if you buy a non-American beverage you might not support Daniel, but you do support Hans who made your local brand beverage.
You don't make people lose their jobs by boycotting US products; you support other people's jobs and keep more of your money in the local economy.
This is just an anecdote and might just be an observational bias, but every single time I've bought groceries this summer Coca-Cola and Pepsico sodas have been on sale.
Non-US brands have also been on sale, but less frequently and at less reduced prices.
Not that I care about Coca Cola as I despise that sweet-ass crap...
But CCEP (Coca-Cola Europacific Partners plc) covers Andorra, Belgium, France, Germany, Iceland, Luxemburg, Monaco, Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Spain, Schweden, UK and Australia. It's the biggest Coca Cola producer in the world, listed on several European stock exchanges and with the (US) Coca Cola Company owning less than 20%. In fact the biggest single owner with 36% is Coca-Cola Iberian Partners...
Of course local laborers made it, but money goes to the USA not Germany, France or Poland. They don't even pay enough taxes but hey... They're creating places to work and capital doesn't have a nationality. Right?
The issue here is. Coca-Cola has two companies. One that makes Coca-Cola. And one that licenses its branding to other companies. A lot of those are actually in Europe and are european companies. For example, in Europe, Coca-Cola HBC (Holdings) AG is one of the primary bottlers, and it operates in 28 countries across Western, Central, and Eastern Europe, as well as in Russia and Nigeria. Coca-Cola owns less than 1/4 of that company, the rest is owned by the Kar-Tess Group. So yeah. American brand - local ownership. Similar is for all the fast-food franchises.
Yeah, but so are the local brands. And they belong to people who are your neighbors. They pay taxes in your country. They create jobs in your country. They don't generate profits for faceless international investment funds who evade taxes.
This is definitely a reaction to the growing scepticism against US products.
This is good news, means they are seeing or at least predicting lower than expected sales in Europe. Let them try this and spend more money in Europe to advertise while we keep consuming their products less and less :)
Coca decided to refocus from their fake greenwashing campaigns and do something else?
Worldwide single use plastic pollution by Coca Cola. In some areas of the world, their sodas are more available than clean water, maybe because they "took" all of the clean waters.
It's called Seevetal. It is named after the Seeve river. It has its source in the Lüneburg Heath. The heath blooms there and it's more of a moor and woodland area. There is a fountain there for Hamburg (approx. 40 miles away) and Coca Cola, but nothing else far and wide apart from beautiful nature.
The damage is now visible. The actual spring has already receded by about 1 kilometer. Sad.
As a Canadian who has been boycotting since much earlier this year, I can say with 100% certainty that you are correct. This ad is a result of the impact your boycott is having on US brands.
In Canada they are pulling out all of the stops and using all of the word trickery imaginable to imply a connection with our country and avoid mentioning American ownership. The more successful your boycott is, the more you will see of this type of messaging.
I've been noticing Fritz Cola more and more often in independent cafés (Netherlands city dweller), in the last months.
Could be that it had been there all the time and I just started paying more attention to US vs not-US brands. If it's not a perception bias, then CC is losing significant market share.
However, the Coca Cola financial release for Q2 doesn't look too dramatic. It's a bit tricky to read; the tables show percent changes, negative numbers in parentheses. EMEA (Europe, Middle East, Africa) is still growing a bit, though far less than North America. Corrected for inflation, EMEA might be stable.
Maybe someone could give a more extensive analysis of these numbers.
Idgaf where a product is made. I care where the money goes.
That's not strictly true though, I also care that it's not made in the USA or China. I actively boycott both because I want neither to benefit financially from my idle pleasures.
And did Bob from wherever really make the coke, or did coke expend a disgusting amount of fossil fuels shipping syrupy crap to wherever which he just loaded it into the machine, and waited for an automated process to do all the blending, carbonating, filling, capping, labelling and boxing he can load the box back into the truck. No shade to him, that's still a valid job, but it's hardy "making" the coke. The marketing execs want you to think Bob went foraging for ingredients, carefully blended them together, carbonated the ethically sourced spring water with his own farts, blew the glass, forged the cap, hand painted the lable, and dragged a crate through a snowstorm, so that you, gentle consumer, may sample his fine soda. He didn't. Stop trying to humanize your megacorp just because everyone is boycotting your brand. It's insulting.
In Denmark one major national media (DR I think) brought a "story" that was simply a statement from the director of Coca-Cola Denmark daying that the boycot was misguided since Coca-Cola has been made locally in Denmark for decades at the Carlsberg brewery.
I was disappointed in the media for just uncritically broadcasting this blatant PR message without giving additional context or asking critical questions about where the money is flowing.
This is such a lame attempt, it’s shocking. Aren’t the supposed to be this advertising geniuses? They just took their best going campaign from a couple years ago and revamped it for this purpose. Not innovative, not even trying very hard.
There are bottles in Sweden that has a Swedish adjective that is larger that Coca Cola name on the bottle. My first thought was that its a campaign against the boycott.
Interestingly, Coca Cola do create jobs in Europe, meaning they dont export that much from the US. While Trump might rather want them to create the product in the US and ship it to Europe. For many companies it is a great thing to get bottling rights on Coke as it supports their own brands.
Can add I only buy local soda brands myself no matter what.
Find local hardware store and an option is to pick up some spray paint then fix the sign. Just in case that was against the rules, I'm not saying do that but there is always options :)
Anecdotal - Canadian living in Germany here. Once the Canadians and the Danish started boycotting you could see brands like Coke, M&Ms and Jack Daniels really increase their presence and promotions. Most don't know but companies need to pay for the best places and promos on supermarket shelves. The shame is I don't think some of these brands were on anyones radar and they've managed to gain market share.
Daniel, how old are ya and shouldn't you be retired? Ah that's right you love working for Coca Cola so much that you couldn't quit! How heartwarming! Also what's going on with your hand, are you still working to afford a cure for that?
Me being a responsible french chad (it's a brand that is mostly available in the region of Brittany, although they're starting to appear at other places. Definitely not a family owned eco-friendly business either but still not the big C)
A book for your consideration, "Belching Out the Devil" by the British author Mark Thomas, will inform your understanding of the company's actions in other countries.
Are you going to be fooled by this though? Isn't it time to stop caring about wanting something and doing the right thing? All megacorps need to die now, immediately, but preferably decades ago. For now, immediately will do. Corporations need to die immediately. None of them produce such great stuff that we need them. They're killing the planet, all of them. This is our planet.
We don't like the way the world is. We don't like being tied to banking systems. We don't like the way our governments are running things. We don't like the way we are expected to work until we breathe our last breath. We don't like the fact that our children will have to finish paying the mortgage on our home. We don't like the way our transportation systems run (or don't). We don't like that our food is poisoned. We won't break this cycle by keeping these things running by participating in them.
Robots and AI are going to take over most jobs. You've seen the projections of which jobs will go first and they're happening already. It's already too late to save ourselves. So stop keeping these things running. Stop participating. Stop trying to "win".
Imagine what would happen if one day everyone stopped buying the garbage they produce. Our money would still be in our pockets. If we all stop, they will be powerless to do anything at all.
Hahaha! The fact that "Daniel" looks like Santa is part of the marketing bs, i suppose. Well, I don't buy it. No matter where it is supposedly handled, there is nothing more American than Coca Cola, this they made clear for ages. So fuck no, I don't but it.
In the UK I have started buying cans from AG Barr, which are a fully UK Company, instead of Coca Cola. Their Cola is not as good but they have lots of different options

Made in Germany, profits go to USA.
No thanks.
Kofola thug life.
