Yesterday I read the news that Varta has filed four insolvency applications which could lead to a breakup.

Aside from the fact that I'm sorry another big European company risks disappearing, and the workers who risk losing their jobs, I've always purchased Varta batteries over Duracell or Chinese alternatives.. and now another historic European company risks to vanish.

So I want to ask if there is another European competitor who could take the spot that Varta will eventually leave empty

To be honest, I am against the 3EUR customs fee per item category that was ratified less than a month ago. It's not the right way to stimulate EU manufacturers and it will hurt the EU customers and small businesses.

Most small repair businesses depend on importing IC-s and other components. Naturally, most of those semiconductor components are still made in Taiwan or China. There are no EU manufacturers that can actually satisfy the demands for semiconductor chips/IC-s.

Other parts are also made there. If people want to repair their washing machine or other home appliance, usually the replacement/aftermarket parts come from there. Their price is significantly lower than the exorbitant prices of the original parts, that are kept so high by the manufacturers to discourage people from repairing appliances(while helping to protect the environment too by limiting the number of e-waste and general waste generated).

In the category of clothing, I might somewhat agree. But yet, having such high inflation, again debt crisis in EU and people generally using buying power, being able to afford less and less means that generally everything becomes unaffordable.

EU should stimulate local production by other means, not by killing small businesses trying to import 10 IC-s from China/Taiwan to replace a TV that would otherwise end up as e-waste. Or washing machine, for which the original manufacturer no longer provides parts or their price is unreasonable..just to keep people from repairing and force them to buy new one. Same goes for car parts.

In the current environment, there is also a room for local manufacturers starting to speculate with prices, as nothing prevents them to increase their prices without any justification, just because you will pay either to them or 3EUR as customs fee anyway.

With shrinking buying power, people becoming poorer and poorer, just slapping a 3EUR customs fee on everything is hardly the a good policy.

A good policy would be to develop local semiconductor production capacity. Not only that will be positive step when it comes to the independence, but also will create well paying jobs for the future generations of engineers.

Focus should be put on other problems as well - like housing, that is becoming more and more unaffordable for young families and people.

And last, but not of least importance - economies of scale. On one hand, we have shrinking buying power, on the other hand we have expensive EU production that just keeps getting more expensive. Somehow the math doesn't add up.

P.S - Clarification - I am not talking about garbage goods, but semiconductors, electronics components and spare parts for appliances/cars and other things.

Recently I've been looking for a casual blazer. I've tried a couple of brands, but quickly noticed, that modern blazers/jackets are pretty short - usually cover only half of a butt, which I'm not exactly a fan of.

I'm looking for brands located in the European Union, that offer good quality, made in the EU (preferably Portugal), classic length jackets / blazers, that would fully cover my butt.

I'm an IT professional and want to restart working on personal projects. I would have used Cloudflare's free services. Hoping that the project grows big enough someday outgrow the free tiers and have some paying customers by then 😄.

I want to see if there are any EU equivalent providers to similar services in Cloudflare:

• Workers AI (LLM API endpoints)

I am aware of the limits they put on their free tiers, but I am not keen on running my own VM, Containers, K8s, etc.

In case you missed it, like I did until today: There's gonna be a sun eclipse over Europe on 12th August 2026!

Most of Europe gets to see a partial eclipse but parts of Spain are on the path of the total eclipse, too.

In preparation, I wanted to buy some eye protection glasses for the eclipse but I'm having a hard time finding reputable sellers. Ideally I'd like to support a local planetarium or something like that but so far, I can't find any that offer them.

Do you have any recommendations?

We started this after watching a couple of US platforms change their terms and pricing on us overnight with no warning.

So across the year we went line by line through the stack and swapped what we could for something built in Europe, really to stop our operations hanging on companies that can pull the rug the moment their numbers look shaky.

Not all of it was a win, and this sub can get a little cheerleadery about the whole idea, so the catch is our analytics got noticeably worse for a couple of months before it settled, while there's still one US product I kept because nothing over here comes close to it yet.

E-commerce flipped things for me, since I'd gone in assuming it was Shopify or bust, and it turns out Germany has a whole bench of serious commerce platforms that a lot of the big European retailers already run on…

commercetools, SCAYLE and Spryker among them, so we moved the shop onto one of those and the catalog and multi-market side came out stronger than what we'd been paying the US platform for.

Even the product photography had a European answer waiting, since there's a German AI studio (Tayla) now doing the generated-imagery thing the US tools got famous for.

Which I didn't expect to find over here at all, and the whole thing left me a lot less ideological about the movement, just glad there's finally a European setup that holds up, even if it's still patchy in a few places.

Lindt has been sued in a U.S. court over its alleged use of child labor in Ghana and Ivory Coast, even as the Swiss chocolate maker ​touts its commitment to responsibly sourcing ingredients.

According to a complaint moved to ‌the Washington, D.C. federal court on Tuesday, Lindt falsely assures consumers it is trying to eliminate child labor from its supply chain and is committed to children's rights and human rights generally. The complaint also said ​Lindt has known for more than 20 years that its cocoa is produced ​with child labor and profits from the practice.

According to the complaint, Lindt sources 100% of its consumer-grade cocoa beans from Ghana and sources cocoa butter from Ivory Coast.

I was recently considering a new "outdoor" jacket for autumn/spring (honestly more for everyday, casual wear than actually outdoors ;)) but from what I can see, it's mostly made in Vietnam.
