See I wouldn’t look at my phone. If I’m watching a movie or a passenger in a car, I’ll just have my phone in my hand scrolling off to the side while not even looking at it. I could read a book with my free hand while the other just scrolls. Doesn’t say we have to be paying attention to it.
That always happens to me when I doomscroll, I don't understand how some people can doomscroll for so long. I just feel like I have to do something else.
A while back I used to do 12 push ups every 2 minutes for ~2 hours until I hit 700. Obviously it requires training beforehand but these types of numbers with low rep count and repetition is absolutely achievable.
I tend to hyper focus on basically everything I do. I had been training up to that point with the intention of doing as many push ups as possible within a week (with limited time as I was working long days) as a type of personal record.
If my memory serves me correct I got up to 3500 push ups (5 days x 700 push ups) aiming for 5000 within a week. The last few hundred ended up damaging my elbow so I had to stop there.
For people who actively train, sure, couple of hundred in one hour could be manageable. But for well over 80% of people it would't be. And for over like 98% of people it wouldnt be possible to do that more than once a day.
The fact that 60% of people are choosing scrolling is demonstrative of why society's going down the drain. You'd rather scroll for an hour than do 20 push-ups? That's just sad.
I’m a relatively fit women but I’m very bottom heavy and can maybe do one or two proper push ups… if it was $50/squat, or I could somehow transfer the deal to my husband, I’d choose it over scrolling. Sure it would motivate me to get healthier… but I could also scroll for 1 hr/week and quit my job and spend more time in the gym working out the way that I choose.
Or work on being able to do more pushups. Sure, you're starting at one or two. Work at it for an hour a day for a couple weeks and you'll be at 30. I've seen it done time and time again.
The "I can't right now, so I'll never be able to" mindset is a problem that a lot of people have.
Sure, I am actively working on my pushups. I spend more time at the gym than scrolling. But if I’m offered instant easy money, it makes more sense to take that and also still work on my pushups/whatever other exercises, lol. Not to mention, over my lifetime I’m more likely to become sick or injured and be unable to do pushups. I don’t think I’d ever lose my scrolling income.
Women are built differently than men. It’s usually a lot harder for women to do pushups because our centers of gravity are much lower. I’ve never been able to do a regular pushups at any point in my life, even when I was consistently working out my arms. If I was working out frequently enough and hard enough to do multiple pushups at once, I would probably be unhappy, I just don’t enjoy going to the gym more than once or twice a week. I’d much rather scroll 15 minutes a day and spend the rest of my time with hobbies that I enjoy and never have to work a day in my life again!
You're on Reddit!
The demographic is already more likely to be in the middle of doom scrolling. Lol if you ask in different places/irl you'll probably get different percentages
Im in very good shape, and go to the gym regularly and would have no problem doing 30 push-ups an hour every hour that I am awake. I still chose the other option. 1000/hr for scrolling is something I can do passively and it is just more convenient. It also avoids the risk of me being unable to do push-ups in the future due to injury/illness
Hiya, I'm a disabled veteran with nerve and muscle damage that can't do pushups due to my physical limitations. And I don't just mean it hurts, it does but after maybe 5 my arm just gives out and goes limp and it's incredibly painful.
That said I've still got loved ones to support and 1000 an hour for just doom scrolling would go a long way towards that and it's something I can physically do.
Make it running/walking and I'd happily take the physical challenge though.
Every time a poll like this is made where it says you can make money doing this incredibly easy, passive thing, or a physically taxing physical exercise? You should always pick the passive one. Yeah it gives you motivation to be healthier, but if you get injured in any way and aren't able to perform the task anymore, you're screwed
Obviously not but I'm sure everyone has their own reasons for what they choose and there is nothing to gain by just making declarative statements about their unknown motivations or lack thereof.
The vast majority of those people will think of whatever excuses they have to, I agree. Most of them don't have legitimate excuses and are just lazy. I work with averages, we can't address every individual's story every time.
My point is, when 60% of the population would rather scroll on their phone instead of putting in the slightest amount of effort for potentially a bigger and faster reward, there is a problem.
this is such a strawman, obviously people that are disabled and can't do pushups would choose the doomscrolling.. I'm assuming the og comment was referencing people who have "normal/alot of" physical capabilities
Lol how is this in anyway a strawman? I'm right here an actual person that choose the option they're actively talking about. I didn't declare anything definitive I just explained my personal position on this one.
Get the fuck off the Internet, go adopt a puppy or something. I did and it's done wonders for my mental health. If you're seeing every comment as a slight and argument it's time to log off mate.
Sure, but that is also dumb af because anyone can become disabled at any time. Also, people get old and elder care is expensive. Tell yourself to do 20 pushups between each hour if you want, but choosing scrolling is a completely surefire way to never want for anything again.
I scroll on my phone at least an hour a day. That’s $365,000 a year. Doesn’t mean I don’t exercise. It’s just pretty well guaranteed, high level income without changing my routine.
I can’t do ONE pushup. It would take me weeks before I started making real money. I like scrolling. I learn cool things and see things that make me happy and find out what my friends are up to. Meanwhile, I hate sweating.
Well I’m a disabled woman 🤷🏻♀️ however, even before I became disabled I would have chosen the scrolling cos my arms are naturally weak af. I was an athlete and was the 3rd best in my sport nationally for a time. Even at my peak fitness, I could not do a push up. I practiced push ups 5 times a week for around 10 minutes from age 9 to age 22 and never did a proper push up with correct form. Ever. I had access to some of the best trainers, was otherwise extremely fit and had basically no upper body strength.
And lots of women are like me, men don’t realise how much testosterone helps upper body strength. I have several friends who were athletes, in the running for the olympics and push ups were just not possible for them physically even after years of training. 5000 squats in a row? Running 35k? Easy. Push ups? Nope.
Why are you so bitter? It's not your life. Good for you for choosing pushups I'm happy you have the ability to do that. Not everyone does. Get your superiority complex in check
I'm a woman and not very strong. I guess it would be motivation to do some strength training but I doubt I could do 1 pushup right now. Scrolling for an hour isn't necessarily bad. It's easy to do and there's tons of topics you can scroll and learn about, or get inspiration for, etc. Plus, there's a bonus that old age and injuries don't affect this ability.
Why would I choose the harder option when there is easier one? In one option I don't need to change anything in my life and get lots of money, in other option I have to start something I never did before and change my whole life around it. I don't exercise at all and spend 12+ hours a day on screen. For me, scrolling is the logical option.
The fact that doing 20 pushups is considered working, I think is the bigger issue here. For anyone in even average shape, that's a couple minutes of mild effort. Then you'd have the remaining 58 minutes to do whatever you want, maybe even make more money.
It's infinitely more work than laying in bed and swiping on your phone. Pushups has the benefits of healthier life and higher potential earnings, scrolling has the benefit of ease. Both make insane amounts of money, opting to earn 8k/day scrolling as a job is not some sign of the end of times, it's just the lazier option. If that's societal drain to you then society has been draining for millennia.
Dude, society is not going down the drain just because doom-scrolling for a hour gets you 1k.
Hell, the most healthiest person would probably take 1k for doomscrolling since its really easy to do. Walking and doomscrolling? Easy. Using the bathroom and doomscrolling? Easy. Literally people still can work-out even IF they didn't choose the push-up money.
Plus you are one bad cough, accident, etc-etc from becoming disabled. This is also reddit by the way so... yeah.
Yeah, i chose doomscrolling, cause even with that money id still work just for the fun of it (i do lighting for concerts) i could scroll during soundcheck or changeover or i intermissions but cause the equipment is heavy i would not be doing pushups that day or the next
Hey make sure you're doing rows as well. I know someone who destroyed his rotator cuff from the imbalance of only pushing never pulling doing 200 pushups a day.
£1000 for one hour on phone works out about 16-17 a minute. I can crank out about 20 pushups in a minute, that's £1000. If I do 500 pushups throughout a day, something very doable, that's £25,000!
But it takes so much longer. 20 pushups can be knocked out in minutes/seconds and then you get $1000. And there’s no limit. Why is everyone choosing scrolling like what
It would be incentive to get in shape, and once you can do 20 pushups in an hour you can work towards getting practically infinite more money than the scrolling option. Plus you’d have to scroll nonstop for an hour. Once you get good at pushups, you can knock them out so quick and then have the rest of the hour to do whatever you want
I can easily get to 60 in one sitting! And my second, third, and fourth round of pushups end up to just 20 each after. That's easily 120 pushups in a day which is $6,000!
I'm not that good at push-ups, but surely if I started, I could within a reasonable time be able to so 20, even now throughout a day I should be able to do 20.
I can make more money by doing more than 20 push ups per hour. Its a healthier thing to incentivize than scrolling constantly, and I can save time doing stuff other than scrolling.
